Polearm/spear has a higher-than-average range, so I think that is why your character wasn't far enough from Diablo.

looter already knows this, but for viewers that don't: Strength runeword in any melee weapon gives 25% Crushing blow, which you want against bosses. And Obedience gives 40% Crushing blow. Just farm NM Countess longer.

I liked playing a Fendazon, Valk and A2 Merc. Triple spears. Only 20 points into Fend, rest into support tree. Damn, that socket helm was pretty nice.

You died, because you were in nightmare, where for some reason, the minimum distance thing doesn't work. They fixed it now, I believe, but nightmare travincal would also deal an unnormally large amount of damage if you had a fire enchanted council member. Nightmare is/was just special like that...

Never use zeal with a slow 2h weapon. Zeal is only for shields and 1h. If you wanna play 2h pally, your best bet is sacrifice only, or vengeance. In either of these cases, you gear entirely physical damage, because vengeance scales off your physical damage and you can properly leach life and mana that way. Conviction is, of course, still the best for vengeance, but fanatacism is second best.

because you are using a spear/polearm and it added your attack range, therefor you are not close enough to diablo.

you did good id like to see you try again! who knows maybe with other merc builds like Act 5 barb or the Act 1 bow zon..Act 3 is just a fireball sorc but uses sword and shield haha tried holy freeze with the Pally lance that gives +3 pally skills and still struggled haha the damage is good but you get destroyed without Resistances from a shield, tough playthrough! Id like to see if it can get to hell with optimized gear there are some items that would actually make it really strong!

Is there a range for attacks??? Maybe using 2hand pole arm moved you out of normal melee range as you were able to start the attack from further away.

Is it just me, or fire enchanted explosions can't hurt you becasuse of length of the spear? All the time playing melee chars was pissed off by those, especially while going zeal or frenzy, when you can't really control your attacks.
