personally if i hated my life in the amish community and i hated the people in it, i wouldn't want to be buried or associated with them. obviously the way that the shunned dead get treated is absolutely horrible, yet it's almost comforting to know that eli's father and the other man's final resting place is removed from the rest of the dead in the cemetery. it makes people remember who they were and why they did what they did, which honestly could inspire more people to reflect of the amish community and why it would lead someone to taking their life. idk if this makes sense and this is just my opinion

I had some Amish friends at my school. They told me all about their lifestyle and how so many kids at would take their lives because of how miserable it was there. I couldn’t imagine living that way. I grew up with Amish people. The women are mistreated. I once knew a woman who had the longest hair I had ever seen, I told her how amazing I thought it was and she told me how she wasn’t allowed to cut it or she would be punished. I saw Amish people differently. But there were so many amazing Amish people, the Amish kids I used to play with were some of the nicest I’ve ever met.

Eli’s story is so sad and shows the abuse that can be hidden in such a closed environment. That being said, it sounds like he grew up in pretty strict Amish community. I was Amish for 16 years of my life and my experiences were mostly all good and healthy. The Amish culture is so nuanced and each church has slightly different rules, so it is very hard to lump them all together. Most Amish people live in a healthy loving environment, and that’s why we don’t see hundreds leaving the church daily.

The Amish community is full of rape, incest, beating one year old infants, etc. Drug dealers, thieves get punished more than pedophiles in the Amish communities do. Victims told me stories of inappropriate touching, groping, fondling, exposure to genitals, digital penetration, coerced oral sex, anal sex, and rape, all at the hands of their own family members, neighbors, and church leaders. Both parties have to go before the church, and confess about what happened and the victim has to ask the male perpetrator for forgiveness for having tempted him. It’s the woman’s fault. The women are also warned not to report to police, to outside authorities. If they do, they are going to be ex-communicated by the church.”

It's so upsetting to hear so many stories about loved ones having to live up to certain expectations, and then get ostracised later on when they don't conform to those standards. These stories are often forgotten, and it's important our generation learns about them. I had heard about the Amish community ages ago, but have forgotten ever since. These small details shape the next generation, and we must learn from these mistakes.

I came to the comments to see people ranting about how poor the living conditions are for the horses ( speaking from 12:22 ) but I haven't seen a single one and I'm too lazy to say how poor it is so I'll just say a few things ;D 1. The horses are stood in spaces where they can't move and they're stuck eating 2. The fact that the man can't think of the name for the horse confuses me, if that horse is in a barn you go to, you should know his/her name 3. Thank you for reading this, this isn't hate I'm just sharing my opinion :>

I was in Plymouth, Massachusetts on a road trip and staying in this hotel. My family and I were by the pool and this Amish guy came over and sat with us and this other group and they started talking and he told us how his ex wife’s father was the leader of a cult that shaved off Amish’s beards. He told us how he had to take his two daughters (who were at the pool) away from his wife. I think you can see the whole story online somewhere but the thing that surprised me was that this guy had a flip phone and to get there he had this older couple drive them around on a vacation. Also in Plymouth there is a deli called “The Yellow Deli” and it is run by a cult called the “Twelve Tribes” it’s very interesting stuff.

Keep up the awesome work Ben. It’s nice to see you bringing awareness to both good and bad sides of Amish colonies. As lots of people these days just take the whole thing as a joke. I can’t wait for the next video!

i recently went to pennsylvania, where the amish community is very active, and it seemed so nice and simple from the outside. i never would have guessed that the amish had all these deep dark secrets. also, i was sick as a dog before watching this video and now i feel so much better. thx Ben 💚💚

I'm glad Eli escaped from the toxic place he has been raised in. It was a brave thing of him to do. And his father's death was pretty sad like I would literally stay as far away from a community that shunned me because of my own decisions and just not treating my father with the respect he deserves I hope Eli lives a happier life, thanks for showing us his story, Ben
