I Just Bought 2 Honda Elements

Yes, you read that correctly. I just purchased 2 2005 Honda Elements with manual transmissions no less. In my experience it’s not easy to find Elements with manual transmissions.
In this video I do a full inspection on these new acquisitions. One of them has a bad engine unfortunately, but it should make for a nice video when I replace it.

Best car I've ever owned bar none. Lil camper really, spend hundreds of nights in it. Pull the back seats unless yer haulin folks on the reg. *And seriously FFFFFFFFF Honda USA.* They stopped making these & stopped selling the Fit which is practically a replacement for these w/ the seats out or flat. Meanwhile you can get a Fit ("Jazz") everywhere else for 22k hybrid. 50mpg ish. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF Honda USA. F em F em F em.

Progressive insurance adjuster declared my 2005 beige Honda Element(manual transmission) a total loss after a recent car accident. He then had the audacity to low ball me with a $4,600 settlement. But if I want to keep it, they expect me to pay them $3200. WTF?! That doesn't seem right. My mechanic quoted $3500-3700 for repairs. I had so many great times in my element which I bought in 2007 and it only has 121,600 miles for more fun adventures. I'm not sure what to do.

Hey Eric, great video. I have a 2008 Element that I bought new. Just performed the 100000 mile service. Only issues was a torque converter at 40,000, but was covered under the extended warranty. I’m 64 years old and I think the “E” will probably out last me.

K24A2 Swap - K24A2 Swap - K24A2 Swap! - Eric, seriously consider this swap for your cargo khaki Element (great 1 model-year color btw). The engine is basically a drop-in (keep your accessories), and there are affordable tuning options like Ktuner. Hmotorsonline has GREAT prices on low mileage imported 200hp K24A engines, and a fantastic reputation for YEARS. I got a gem from them. I did this swap myself in my garage at home, and I'm not a mechanic (not technically anyway). I paid $250 for remote "e-tuning", and she's up and running. I mean, the Element is borderline underpowered as it is. Since you already have to replace the engine, it's a manual, and your estimate for a stock replacement is $1000, why not add 25% more hp for just a few hundred dollars more?

When doing differential pressure the piston needs to be at top dead center to check where the air is going or else one or both valves could be open,

That may explain why air was coming out of the #3 and 4 holes. I made a chart just to get things straight in my head: Firing Order: 1-3-4-2 1 end compression/begin power(TDC) [both valves closed] 2 end power/begin exhaust [exhaust opening] 3 end intake/begin compression [intake closing] 4 end exhaust/begin intake [exhaust closing and intake opening] 1 mid power [both valves closed] 2 mid exhaust [exhaust open] 3 mid compression [both valves closed] 4 mid intake [intake open] 1 end power/begin exhaust [exhaust opening] 2 end exhaust/begin intake [exhaust closing and intake opening] 3 end compression/begin power(TDC) [both valves closed] 4 end intake/begin compression [intake closing] 1 mid exhaust [exhaust open] 2 mid intake [intake open] 3 mid power [both valves closed] 4 mid compression [both valves closed] 1 end exhaust/begin intake [exhaust closing and intake opening] 2 end intake/begin compression [intake closing] 3 end power/begin exhaust [exhaust opening] 4 end compression/begin power(TDC) [both valves closed] 1 mid intake [intake open] 2 mid compression [both valves closed] 3 mid exhaust [exhaust open] 4 mid power [both valves closed] 1 end intake/begin compression [intake closing] 2 end compression/begin power(TDC) [both valves closed] 3 end exhaust/begin intake [exhaust closing and intake opening] 4 end power/begin exhaust [exhaust opening] 1 mid compression [both valves closed] 2 mid power [both valves closed] 3 mid intake [intake open] 4 mid exhaust [exhaust open] If the #1 was at TDC, the #2 exhaust valve is opening. Most of that air is going to go down the pipe, but the #4 exhaust valve is not quite closed and some will blow in there. Once in the #4, the air has only two ways out (not counting past the rings), out the plug hole (which Eric could hear) and out the just opening intake valve. Once in the intake, most will go out the air box, but some will go in the #3 as that intake is not quite closed yet, hence the quieter noise coming out of the #3 plug hole. If you see anything wrong, please chime in. I hate being wrong.

Canada has a recall on all Elements rear trailing arms where it attached to frame prone to rust. They will put a brace if they can fix it if they can’t Honda will buy it back. This is only in Canada but something that everyone should be aware of

I know about that TC recall too because I got a letter last month. The fix is as you describe but crude IMHO. Check lifewithabox YT channel. Its Canadian and two videos are posted on the recall. There's no serious rust issue on my E there and I'll keep it oiled and inspect regularly so no plans to get the recall done anytime soon.

Home gamer here, worked on my wife's Murano, my old Camry, Q45, and the silicon slide lube is only like $10. First thing I read when reviewing disc brake jobs was grease swells the rubber boots, so I 'splurged' and got the good stuff. I also general coat my rotor and inside of wheel with anti-seize, along with the bolts, however bought the mid-grade coated rotors this year from rockauto. We'll see how they last in NYS winters. Really shouldn't be rocket science for using the right lubes for such a simple job.

Eric, go with Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires for your Elements! I have had them on my Element ever since I first got her and they have never let me down! I drive my 2004 Honda Element EX very hard plus I have DC super low coilovers on it, so handles like a race car with the added bonus of having SUV space! Love my Element! So cool that you bought 2 more! Thanks for always sharing your knowledge on repairing Honda Elements on your channel! There are not many mechanics that share their knowledge on the E's on here! @@ericthecarguy Ditto on the Michelin Defender LTX M/S -- I'm original owner of an '04 GGM Element and have run Michelins since taking the original Goodyear Wrangler's off a few months after buying it. Love the LTX M/S. My Element is great in the snow! 130,000 miles -- mostly fun road trip miles because I don't commute.

Hey Eric in regards to I believe the beige Element where you saw the oil leak near the oil filter/oil pan area; it could be the oil pressure sending unit that is leaking. In my 06 CRV it was leaking out of that and caused a similar oil leak. Replacing it fixed my leak issue. You’re replacing the engine so that should fix that issue lol. Thanks for the video. I love the Khaki color of the element.

Why not, reliable easy to maintain Honda with short front end for easier viewing, did you know the transmission filter is actually under the splash cover between 2 hoses. That’s how easy the maintenance is

Worth it. Good solid car with decent ratings. However, do consider that as these things age, they will gap behind in safety compared with other cars. Keep that in mind.

2004 Element owner here w/185K going strong. Bought a 2016 Civic EX-T 2 years ago which became my primary and handed down the E to my 17yo son. Two months later I missed the E, my son loved the Civic... we swapped. Can't imagine life without her.

Eric, congratulations on a fine choice. I have an 05 E, also 4wd and 5-speed. Had it since last summer. 218,000 kms. Since COVID, I haven't been able to drive it around much. Couple of things I have recently learned through my ownership: 1) Get those aftermarket axles out of there. Aftermarket axles have no place in Elements! 2) For the OEM axles that are still installed, carefully inspect the shaft area under the harmonic balancer because dangerous rust builds up under there until the axle "necks down" and fails. Eric O of SMA has a great YT video of how an axle happened to snap from that cause on a Honda Civic. I think that there is a Honda Fit recall in the US for this safety issue.

Eric and everyone rolling in an Element. I’m 230k into my 2005 AWD EX MT5 and I don’t remember how many sets of tires. The Michelin Defender LTX tire are heads and tail better then anything I’d run in the past. Running the same on my ‘14 Land Cruiser, same great performance.

I still don't get it... why is it that by default, people are taught (teens) how to drive an automatic? In my place, you're taught with a manual car *PERIOD!* - no ifs or buts! And once you know how to drive a manual car, you can drive an auto with no problems (you are free to drive whatever you want ...a lightweight vehicle category (CAT: B2) that is). Albeit, the relentless jerking of the left foot might seem a bit of a bizarre nuisance at first, but you will get used to it. P.S. I really dig that beige color myself... it looks rather nice.

Nice that you found 2 manual elements. I tow with my 2006 manual element. The manual means I can keep the rpms where they should be and never have the auto trans shifting back and forth. 260K and she is still running strong. Hi there. Mine 2006 AWD EX-P came OEM with Japan made Goodyear Wrangler. Those were the worst tires ever. It would not stop in wet condition to save itself. Went to Costco and replaced them with Michelin LTX within 6 months. The LTX were night and day compare to the OEM. Anyway...take care your family and keep the vlogs coming!

Love watching your Element videos! I have a 2005 Element EX 4wd Green 5 speed. Bought it at one of those donation places that people get tax write offs. Bought it with a 192k miles, had some issues that needed addressed. Did some work myself some more complicated had a mechanic friend do it. I’ve had it now for almost a year close to 200k miles and it’s one of the most versatile cars I’ve owned! Love my toaster! 🤣

I am at a crossroads and at my wit's end with my own 2 2004 Honda Elements! Both have started to fall apart bad on me of late, and, I am absolutely crying because it's time to sell them but they both have uneven selling points (or even if I can sell them) I am a risk-taker so I bought the first one, Blue, on eBay in 2016. I knew the engine had to be replaced so I asked the out-of-state seller (Pa.)to kindly take it to a local mechanic which he did, I bought shipped the used motor (45K miles) The mechanic then put it in the car successfully and I drove it back to NYC Total investment $4100. At the time it was a little high $$$ but I adored it. We believe it was a lifesaver, especially because my husband and his co-workers commuted daily for 6-7 months avoiding crowded subways when the Covid pandemic was at its worse. The city can be tough on cars so Blue has gotten its share of scratches and dents no one owned up to, and, oh the catalytic converter which was yanked out and had to be replaced. Blue was a champ. Fast forward to 2022 Blue still works well mechanically, but recently the mechanic gave me the bad news that the undercarriage is badly rusted the rear left tire is slightly off-centered and veering out halfway between the 6 o'clock and 7 position. 😕 The second car, Bronco, was for my daughter and I got off Craigslist. it cost me $2200 and it's sort of an eye-sore. The previous owner had stripped the car paint and then spray painted it. Inside it looked good. I had figured, looks don't matter, it's my daughter's first car, that was my logic. Bronco had recently passed NYS inspection and the owner explained that the transmission had been repaired. The problem was that the repair job didn't come out so good and Bronco when I accelerated it would hesitate slightly followed by a sudden lunging forward. This commonly happens when shifting gears in a standard transmission car, which Bronco is not. Now the market is very hot for Honda Elements and I would like to sell or trade-in or donate them because from here on in it could all be diminishing returns with my Elements. What do you suggest I do? Thanks, Fe

Eric the car guy, Scott Kilmer and scanner dan got me into fixing my own car some things i was too inexpirienced for and lacked the tools but i got most of the work done. They never had a straight answer for me but they sure did help out a lot! I might sell her now shes worth a lot more because of new parts i put in like a distributor battery engine etc.

@EricTheCarGuy when I bought my 2006 Element brand new from Honda, it came with Goodyear Wrangler tires on it. They were garbage and did not last long. I ended up replacing them with Bridgestone Duelers which rode and lasted much better. Btw, I really did like my Element and it was pretty good for unpaved roads too. They are a unique and functional vehicle!

If it makes you feel better, I own three Elements. A 2004, and two 2006. The 2004 model has over 330,000 miles. I know everything Eric is talking about. The cars have great utility and after basic maintenance, they will last a long time. The other two Elements have 175,000 and 149,000 miles. All are AWD with four-speed automatics. I keep looking for a replacement car for the oldest but I have yet to find a newer car with such utility.

I really appreciate your interest in the Honda Element. I bought one in 2003 and owned it for 15 years and sold it. Really regretted the decision. Was able to buy it back and the previous owner really ran it into the ground. I am trying to restore it again and am starting to buy parts for it and get it back to where it was when I sold it. It has 236,000 miles on it and it is a 5 speed. The car is perfect for Hawaii and I use it for my outdoors lifestyle. Surfboards on the roof rack and Trek bike inside. The car now has a Pioneer 6.5 inch Divx system which is bluetooth and hands free phone capability. It makes the car more modern now. I am finding it hard to order parts for the car because it is so old and I couldn't get new headlights because the parts places won't ship to Hawaii. Also what is the rumor that Honda is going to make the Element again? It doesn't make sense that Honda decided not to sell it anymore. And what's up with the Honda Fit as well. I owned a 2015 and really enjoyed that car as well. I also have a 2010 Honda Insight with 214,000 miles and that car seems to just run and run. It is too bad Honda made the new Insight so big. Thanks again for the information you gave me on the Honda Element. I can't believe all the rust that those cars have. We don't have that problem here in Hawaii.

Eric! I just bought my second Element and the floor had a weird warping just like yours. I just took out the “carpet” on mine and the front padding was dripping wet. I live in Southern CA and it hasn’t had a good rain since I’ve owned it. Check under your padding! I’m going to dry mine out but I think it’s such an old paddle that I’m going to toss the padding.

I love the Michelin defender at2 on my Element. Bigger size 235/70-16. Overhauled my undercarriage last summer using some of your vids. In the back of my element right now is an acura tsx k24 with rbb-3 heads. At 192k miles, a freshening is not far off. Decided a little more power would be nice. Yeah, I’m keeping it.
