The E39 5 series is probably one of the greatest cars ever created, extremely well engineered, styled and put together. Very comfortable, very reliable, very connected and communicative to the driver, very economical (at least the regular straight-six ones, the v8s and the m5s take a little more moolah but for the performance it's cheap!) and they just ooze style and class! Mercedes E-classes of the age (e39 in europe was 1995-2003) were also mostly classy, reliable and comfortable, however BMW really took it farther with handling, road feel and sportiness. The E60 is a great car, especially the 6 cylinder manual ones, and while the styling was very criticized at the time they really were a bit before their time. The E60s are beautiful cars and they almost live up to the E39, but that little bit of extra build quality and feel that the E39s provide is something special. Find a well taken care of E39 with the lowest mileage you can and you will be happy!

Great video. I bought a 2002 M5 in Sacramento a couple years ago. Salvage title, 79k miles, flew out and drove it back to St. Louis. The seller was soooo shady, he didn’t have to be, long story, just weird. Anyway, took a huge gamble, and love the car. It feels like a 2 ton go cart. Dinan upgrades include headers, full exhaust, strut tower brace, and carbon fiber air intake. Bought it for $14k, and have no regrets...except for it getting backed into 2 weeks after I moved to Chicago, another long story, but new bumpers front and rear, a fresh new white wrap, and in the process of replacing all fluids for clean slate to my favorite car ever. About the differential, I had an E39 540i. My differential started whining after a while. This can happen if you do a lot of burnouts or donuts. But you should be happy to know that it's fairly cheap to buy a used one or if you have the money buy a brand new one. Great car, awesome price I'm very happy for you. The E39 M5 and the E46 M3 are two of my dream cars. I just don't like the fact that people supercharge them so often. You're going to modify an E46 or an E39, just do things right and turbo charge it. For me I think that might ruin it, well, maybe not the E46 M3 but, the E39 M5 should stay naturally aspirated in my opinion. And that V8 needs to really Rev from time to time. After all it does have a problem with carbon buildup. And also the vanos does need to be maintained. Other than that, this is a great, fun, reliable car that you can comfortably drive with 3 passengers.4 if they are short....

Had the same airbag light issue with my 2006 E53 X5. Was a bad seat sensor pad which was not covered under the recall in my case as mine was a late model 06. Installed a bypass box along with a seatbelt warning bypass so now the car thinks there is always someone in the seat. In my case, my son drives the car now and a small child will never be in the passenger seat if the airbag ever deploys. Box was about $40 with seat belt sensor bypass from eBay sent from Ireland. Works flawlessly. Good luck with the M5. Awesome car. I recently bought a 2008 Volvo S60 from my independent mechanic with 154,400 miles on it...as well with an extensive service history and all the records. Nice Ring taxi! I have one with 237k kms and it has been the most reliable BMW I have owned. Supposedly the early ones had low tension piston rings (less friction) so they produced a bit more power but used more oil. I have the Silverstone interior in mine, and so did the Madonna/Guy Ritchie BMW short film M5. Hope you enjoy the ownership experience. Great cars.

As a former owner of several 200K+ SAABs, I salute you! Anyone can buy new, but it takes persevere to keep an old and interesting European car going. High-mileage cars like these are survivors, and I hope that your M5 gives you 400K more.

Uh, I'm not sure if there's such thing as a "perfect e60 M5". I think thins are constantly breaking.

I love it. Those wheels are gorgeous. Sporting Mercs have never been handling focused cars in my opinion, with the exception of the 190E 2.3-16/2.5-16.

I always get a kick out of your humor and the opening scenes in this video, not once, but twice, fooled me when the cars behind you took off. This was such an interesting vid, Alex. Filled with info and even a bit of your trip back from Atlanta. The only BMW I've owned was what I purchased back in 1978 when I was a kid. It was a 1979 BMW 320i. Man, that car was a blast to drive, far more than Mercedes. My older brothers made me let them drive when we were going somewhere in my car (that's the trouble with being the younger brother!). I'm now steeped in Mercedes Land with age . . . but dang, this video was awesome. All my life I have actually wanted a mint 2002 from the mid 70s . . .so who knows. Again, due to age, I don't need what you just purchased, but just a sweet little 2002 to putt-putt around in like the old fart that I am.

Very nice, clean car! I agree, I find mileage somewhat irrelevant, I’ve seen practically new cars that have been trashed and sitting around is hard on them as well.

In the UK to buy engine oil for M5 costs around £200 a loan because it's very special oil but people can't afford to buy the original oil and they put cheap oil that's too thick to circulate around the engine it must be some kind of thin oil that's very protective

Ben King Lol that’s a good deal but I think I have you beat. I got one with the m sport package for 600$. It had a bad ignition coil and it’s had issues since but they were relatively minor and I’ve had it for a year now. They pull hard man, and obviously it has to be a manual. What’s your mileage?

2000 M5 owner since 2010, gave $13,000 for mine with 140,000 miles, now approaching 250,000 miles. Still gets 19-21 mpg, gets driven at least 2-3 times a week, so more or less daily driver for me. She's not perfect, rust in the left rear, just had the front fascia and lower fender liners replaced, getting ready to go in to the shop for the first real work she's had in 3 years. When I bought the car, I told my wife I wanted a car I could live with for at least 10 years. that was 14 years ago and I don't want to let this thing go. Still satisfying to turn that key every...single...time. She still moves. I don't think this car knows it weighs 4,000 pounds. Feel free to check the following, but if I understand correctly, in the 4 years the E39 was brought to the US (2000-2003), only 16,000 were M5s. There aren't many left. I say good deal, although if you have to rebuild that engine, it's gonna be a $20,000 bill...but you'll probably never have to rebuild it again...

Great video! I really enjoyed watching your facial expression and hearing the excitement in your voice while driving that car. I get it completely, I even let out a few HA! Because I completely understand now, well since July 25th, 2019 anyway. That's when I bought my used 2002 BMW 530i E39, I'm the third owner and it's in beautiful condition. I love driving my new to me favorite car, I paid $3100 cash for it and it's just breaking in (lol) sitting at nearly 200,000 miles (No way!). It's a manual/automatic straight 6cyl, everyone wants to race me in my executive sedan. Very few can keep up with me in this town even off the line, including new challengers, mustangs and Camaros... Over 100mph I can let go of the steering wheel without a worry, the "Kingmaker" drives like it's brand new. Thank you for the video, send me an email and I will send you some pictures of the ride of my life!!🤘
