Just bought a 2021.5 Atlas SEL for my wife after striking out finding a Palisade or a Telluride. Love the space for people and cargo and the smooth ride. We came from a Toyota Highlander and loved it but the space in the third row was brutal for adults. With the captains chairs in the second row, access is great. Never thought I would buy a VW but am very happy with our purchase.

I love my Atlas. I have a 2019 S model V6 with AWD. We used to drive a ‘16 Passat, but now with two boys and a third on the way, we needed a family vehicle. My only complaint with it is that I always have to drive it around in Sport mode. In drive, it’s constantly over shifting and lugging the engine which drives me crazy. I come from manual transmissions and I can’t even imagine putting that kind of stress on the 4 cylinder models let alone the 6! I wish they would realize that not all of us really care about gas mileage. I prefer performance and durability over cost of ownership hands down. Overall, my wife and I are very happy with our lease! (We took your original advice about this model and decided to try it before we buy it!) We are actually excited to see the 2022 model when our lease is up. We are leaving for a 800 mile round trip tomorrow and this is the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever driven on the highway in.

The 3.6 Atlas has actually been a very reliable SUV. The 3.6 VR6 engine is not new to VW/Audi. Even the 2.0T Atlas has been reliable. VW has come a long way in the past 10 years. I do agree with Scotty with the 2.0T being strained more pulling all that weight. It probably will have more engine issues when it gets over 150k miles. But even so, for a VW turbocharged engine to go 150k miles with little maintenance is saying a lot about how far they have come. I see tons of Tiguans with the 2.0T from all the way back in 2011 that have well over 100k miles and they’ve been reliable for people. 5k mile oil change intervals with 0W40 Castrol full synthetic oil and regular fluid drain and fills, these cars can easily last 150k miles.

My wife has a 2018 atlas 2w drive. 4 cylinder. 60,000 miles. We got it new. No problems at all so far. She loves it. She bought it because she likes to sit high and feel safe. I hit a huge deer with it, but I saw it in time to slow my speed from 60 to about 20. The abs worked great and it didn't bend the car at all. Of course it busted the grill and all the plastic crap and punctured the ac cooler. But hey.. that stuff is cheap. We have it full coverage so just a deductible. After 2013 VW reliability has improved a lot. Most buyers like them because they are quiet, comfortable, handle sharply, they feel planted on the road especially 4Motion models, and are very nicely built and perfect ergonomically. Volkswagen and Toyota are the biggest car makers in the world because they are the best middle-class car makers. Toyota is cheaper in quality, clumsy in design but will never break down ever, VW is more classic, and elegant, but not as reliable.

Whereas our 2016 Chevy Equinox (also V6) was lower mileage, it's age was severely starting to show. We just bought one of these - a VW atlas cross sport. We live in Canada and just had three feet of snow. My car went no where however the atlas was a beast in the snow. It’s a great car. No issues. Made in the USA and we have the 6 cylinder engine. Crappy on gas. About 12 to 13 l per 100km - 19 to 17 mpg in the city. Better on the highway. I would recommend one of these if you have a few kids and need room. Smooth ride. Definitely not a speed demon but great to take to the slopes and on longer trips. I do wish the quality was a wee bit more like the Touareg but at the present price point the atlas is a decent value. I agree with Scotty even though it’s not a Toyota. It’s sad but the only American car I would even consider is a f150. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and the big three lost genX - at least in my circle. The I’m happy VW is in Chattanooga - needed spell check for that. Thanks for your hard work Scott.

Hello Mr. Kilmer, I watch your videos religiously as you are the BEST and most trustworthy and most honest mechanic I have ever come across! My wife and I just leases a brand new 2023 VW Atlas SE with 2.0 Turbo 4-cylinder front drive only engine (since we live in Florida and we don’t need the AWD- my brother has (2021) one with a V6 and AWD since he lives in Minnesota with heavy snow and has a large sailboat weighing around 3k pounds to two. My point is that when we got ours a month ago and the AC in the front, middle, and rear are not cold. Only “cool”. My other car being a crappy 2015 Kia Soul blasts winter cold air without any issue. We took the Atlas to the VW dealer service dept they could not find anything wrong other than they added. Fresh Freon. That didn’t do any good. It’s still not legitimately COLD. The third row seat vents is worse off being warmer than cool. What is causing the Atlas to not produce cold enough air temperature when the AC is set at Max? Is the compressor faulty or some sort of computer programmed that’s flawed?

No! I have been driving VWs since 1972 but after watching years of Mr. Kilmer's videos I decided to buy a used Toyota T100 pickup (VW doesn't make pickups). It is a good truck and he was right. So now Mr. Kilmer is recommending a VW I would never consider buying. I love VWs because of their manual transmissions, but you can only get an automatic with the Atlas. Paddle shifters don't float my boat. I have a 92 Corrado VR6 I bought new and a 2015 Golf Sportwagen TDI that gets 55mpg doing 75mph. But I would never get a VW SUV with an automatic when the alternatives are an RX, GX, LX, Land Cruiser, 4Runner, or Highlander.
@IKhanNot
@IKhanNot 4 жыл бұрын
The Atlas, especially in R Line trim, looks amazing and has tons of space but SUVs like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander bring more to the table. The Atlas looks like it should have been introduced in 2013, runs an ancient DFI VR6 engine (known carbon buildup and valve cover leak issues) and the 8 speed transmissions have whining and clicking sounds which VW refuses to address despite the complaints. Also, the Atlas replaced the far superior Touareg which is still available in other markets and has more capability and features. A Toyota Highlander Hybrid is pretty much the gold standard for family crossovers today.
