your viewer is astute!! Pythagorean Theorem suggests that diagonal walls 1.) have more surface area for more defense 2.) take less resources than blocking the same area with straight walls straight walls are good for redundancy: reducing the available surface area to be attacked and layering

When you wall diagonally, you get more distance blocked per tile used. the length across a square diagonally is sqrt(2), or about 1.414 as opposed to the horizontal or vertical length of just 1.
