I was surprised that the headless statue leaning over Laurence the First Vicar has an identical design to Marika on the "Erdtree's Favor" talisman. That along with the gold in the full Formless Oedon Caryll Rune being identical to Marika's Rune really makes it feel like some of Elden Ring's mythos lingered as an early part of the religion of the Healing Church in Yharnam.
@empyrean5183Ай бұрын
....riiiight Odeons, the formless. That rune structure is marikas. Totally doesn't remind me of another formless being from elden ring.
@PierceArnerАй бұрын
@empyrean5183 The *_Shadow of the Erdtree_* cinematic with Marika at the Divine Gateway that states that the beginning was, _“The seduction & the betrayal. An affair from which Gold arose, and so too was Shadow born.”_ reinforces that idea pretty heavily. That having its thematic roots in *_Bloodborne_* where outer gods are attempting to produce surrogate offspring is pretty clear, especially as their language when transcribed into the dark marks of the Caryll Runes reveal unique Gold Runes within them that appear within only the strongest form. The three upward cuts of the trident associated with the link to the Formless Mother are like the three bleeding crimson vertical slashes that are a part of the Formless Oedon Caryll Rune, with the gold of Marika's Rune being within it. Mohg being entirely themed around Blood whilst his twin brother is seated on the Golden throne in Marika's absence follows that pretty directly. It really shows how a lot of those ideas were already in mind during the later stages of making the *_Bloodborne_* DLC, even as the way that those themes were adapted into *_Elden Ring_* and its underlying story & mythology changed… a LOT throughout the game's development. (There are more clear links in the 1.0 version and other cut content that show how those ideas shifted a lot over time but still keep a lot of the visual designs by the time of the release version).

The way that they share a lot of thematic design DNA really makes it seem like the story of The Lands Between could have existed as a legend or even just remnants of a religious practice from another country from hundreds of years ago that was still a lingering influence on early Yharnam before everything went insane with the Healing Church.

@@PierceArnerthe influence of runes, outer gods, lovecraftian themes, and the moon are present in both games.
@PierceArnerАй бұрын
@@thebigenchilada678 That's also because they're very Japanese themes that have a smooth way to adapt uniquely into a Western Fantasy framework, as in Shinto, ofuda talismans are imbued with the power of the Shinto gods through writing & Tsukuyomi is the creator moon Goddess. Even the original Moonlight Sword in *_King's Field_* has runes that become visible on the only physical part of the blade as the rest turns into ethereal moonlight when it's transformed from the stone Dragon Blade. Suffice to say, those are at the deepest core of the pre-Souls mythology that Fromsoftware develops. The Lovecraftian elements are also heavily ubiquitous because both *_Conan the Barbarian_* & *_Call of Cthulhu_* each had notable impacts early in Japan and are why a lot of its settings hold onto more of the "Swords & Sorcery" dark fantasy elements from that, while Western stories focused more around the "High Fantasy" elements of Arthurian & Tolkien fantasy.
@MitridatedCarbonАй бұрын
@@PierceArner yes exactly that. like how caryll runes and great runes basically work similarly and technically are the same thing (transcriptions of words from gods), and the presence of elements of astronomy and cosmic horror, or how the landscape of the lands between has that same dreamlike atmosphere of the nightmares. also the comparison with conan the barbarian is perfect cause I see elden ring as fromsoft doing a pulp-fantasy/Robert E. Howard/michael moorcock inspired game the same way bloodborne was inspired by lovecraft and bram stoker, cause the game has so many nods to conan, both the movie and books, as well as the eternal champion saga that is a shame people don't talk that much about it.

And almost every poison swamp has been a pale, pale imitation of the Valley of Defilement. And yet every one of these still settled FIRMLY in people's minds. So of course Elden Ring kept up that trend. Because whatever you may think of the Wormfaces, you absolutely remember them. How good do you have to be, to keep that up that successfully for so long? Miyazaki says these games are not related. And honestly, if I were him, I’d say the same thing, because otherwise players would be looking too much outside of Elden Ring for answers to the lore. But I’ve always called BS. At least in my own headcanon, I see there being indirect relationships between the world of these games. Like The Lands Between in my mind could very well be the new world created by the painter in Ariendel from DS3. And the Land of Reeds mentioned in multiple places in ER could just as easily be referring to Ashina from Sekiro. Especially considering Ashina translates to “land of reeds” in Japanese, iirc Not to mention Ranni’s ending seems to be directly connected to Bloodborne, and the Flame of Frenzy ending could also be connected to rekindling the flame in the ending of DS1. Idk, it’s just hard to dismiss these worlds as being completely unrelated. Like I said at least in my personal head canon lol

I figure it's mostly that designers & developers often come up with neat ideas about existing assets that they just don't have time to include. So, they make a point to revisit & explore that idea further in whatever their current project is afterwards. This being a statue with a really strikingly memorable & uncomfortable silhouette likely made them want to revisit it as a living enemy - which would mean remaking the whole thing, designing a lot more of what's actually underneath, animations, attacks, etc. which had them come up with a version of it that fit into the Lands Between rather than Yharnam.
