I’m a professional data analyst and one thing to consider in reviewing this data is the size of the data pool for each country. For instance if a country has 30,000 anime watchers but only 700 of them use MAL then that data only represents 2.3% of the communities interest. Also in regards to Finland and WEED there is a difference between most well known and favorite/most popular. While I can see Code Geass being very loved/popular here in the US it’s certainly not more well known than DBZ or Naruto or Sailor Moon. All that being said I’d love to make some charts/breakouts with that data too see most popular series globally/regionally as well as genres.

AS a data analys you could have mentioned, that the niche top3s like all Madoka or Date a Live is most likely due to very small amount of data in that country and only represent one overly enthusiastic MAL user's preference.

This dataset is highest rated, which isn't necessarily correlated with most popular. As not a data analyst, it seems obvious to me that Naruto is much more popular than this MAL data would have you believe. Same with Dragon ball.

In russia we dont use MyAnimeList, we use russian clone of MAL called Shikimori and according to it the most popular anime in russia is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Steins;Gate and Hunter x Hunter (2011).

I feel like the reason why Weed wasn't in Finland's top 3 is because this list isn't really about the most famous anime in a certain country, rather the most popular among its fans. In Hungary, the most famous anime would 100% be Naruto, because everyone has heard about it/seen a few episodes on TV, even people who have no idea what anime is. This list focuses on what a certain country's fans think the best anime is, which is still really interesting, but has very different results

A Finn here. I think Joey made a tiny mistake there, the most famous anime is indeed not Weed but Silver Fang, the previous part of the series. Basically Weed is the continuation part, even though that was a huge thing in the anime community as well, it's not as popular as Silver Fang. And yes, they both are about wild dogs in Japan. The original 90s Silver Fang animation got hugely popular in Finland as we all watched it when we were kids.

In the United States while something like Code Geass is highly regarded, it's definitely not as popular as shows like Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon. This list is based on scores, so it being a list of the rated anime would make a lot more sense. When I think popular, I think of shows that everyone, not just anime fans, know about. I think that's why something like Weed could be considered the most popular anime in Finland, while not being on the list.

Yeah Weed, and more precisely Silver Fang was something that almost every finnish household had as a VHS cassette in the 90's. Being as widely distributed as any Disney movie, it is no surprise that it became a kind of a "generation classic". This is a really interesting idea, I'd like to see other lists like this in the future. Maybe even based on other data not only MAL? Of course, as others already mentioned, it does not give correct information about the popularity of an anime, since 1) most people who only watched some popular anime probably never used MAL, 2) some anime are well known even if most anime fans never watched a single episode (like Dragon Ball or Pekomon, I guess). You shouldn't forget that only anime fans use MAL. The most famous anime are the ones that also non anime fans know and watch. In Germany as example there are 3 anime that almost everyone watched as a kid (Heidi, Wiki, Bee Maya) Every german can tell you who those are, but obviously not everyone adds them, because most people don't even know that MAL exists, and even if they knew it existed, its very unlikely that everyone would do it.

Take this in consideration: every country except japan has a limited amount of anime, and people into anime. Yemen (a developing country) probably has access to a small amount of series that are translated into their native language. Being able to watch anime also requires Internet in most places (unless it comes on tv) and even that is not considered important compared to food and water.

This analysis in fundamentally flawed if you are trying to answer the question “Which is the most popular Anime", as MAL is a very biased data source due to its target audience. Also ratings are an awful proxy for popularity. What if you had a single 10/10 review for a very obscure Anime? The actual question answered by this analysis is "Which are the top rated anime in each country, as rated by Anime enthusiasts of that country", which is a very different question (And as interesting as the original one) . I'm from Brazil, and the most popular anime here would be Dragon Ball for sure (Definitely not FMA:B/Steins Gate as this analysis seems to show)

A couple things to note: First, the absence of Weed in Finland’s top 3 could be because popular doesn’t mean favourite. Take Pokémon for example; it’s clearly the most popular in many places, yet never really a favourite. Second, the reason why some smaller countries have more recent anime at the top could be due to a more recent rise in anime popularity or more recent first access to MAL. Finally, some countries having Interspecies Reviewers near or at the top is possibly a matter of a significantly high ratio between Nuxtaku viewers and anime fans that don’t watch him.

The thing is... the response you got at the convention in Finland was regarding "fame" and the type that even our grandmas would know about... But this list is about popular rating. 2 very different things, therefore 2 very different possibilities to collect data. That's why it's confusing. For example, In Brazil the number 1 is FMAB and 90% of anime consumers that have watched FMA agreed with that fact (when it comes to being critically acclaimed), but there's also a lot (and I mean a LOT) of other anime lovers that don't know FMA even exists. Let's be real, Most people in most countries pirate Anime because of it's unavailability. For my country India, Netflix is the only legal way to watch good animes without hassle(which we got only recently). Before internet the only limited source of anime to us was TV(cartoon network and Animax). MAL would probably cover those people who are into anime as of date and most people who would have watched anime back in 90's and early 2000's have either grown over it or wouldn't care to visit MAL to give their opinions. Given that fact, the most popular anime would no doubt be Pokemon, Beyblade, DBZ, Naruto. SNK, Death Note, FMAB among the recent ones. My 2 cents.

Finn here For some reason Weed anime was absolutely massive in early 90's Finland, it was released as VHS in 1989 and shown in TV three times, once every two years from 94 to 98 so every single 20-30 something finn has seen at least some of it and knows all the legendary, most memed moments in it. The company that was translating the manga to english went bankrupt but in Finland it was fully released as manga as well in early 2010's and was well recieved by young adults with nostalgy boners. Also, Weed was the second part of the manga and I feel like the first part, Nagareboshi Gin was even bigger and they were published with same name. I'll show myself out.

I've always seen Weed as more "Most influential" anime/manga series rather than "Most popular" series in Finland. The fact that the manga was published in Finnish and that the TV-series was broadcasted on Finnish television with Finnish dubs made it so that a lot of ppl knew or at least had heard of the series. Even nowadays you often see Weed in the magazines section in your closest K-/S-Market even if it's old asf. This is just how I see it and I don't represent our whole country with this opinion. I also can be wrong with some of the stuff I said here so correct me if I'm wrong.

I think this demographic shows that myanimelist is really only a tiny percentage of anime viewers, I think in many countries, mainstream shows like One Piece, Dragonball, Pokemon are way more famous than shows like Ginga Eiyū Densetsu. Many people are watching animes in the regular television in their countries and would never think about to go into the internet and search for an anime database like myanimelist. This strongly applies to small countries in which a tiny group of people are watching anime and only a small percentage of it is using myanimelist. This circumstance boost niche anime into the top 3 of the country.

I was thinking this while watching the video. There are a few anime shows that have become so mainstream that we take them for granted. For example, is a hardcore anime fan going to rate Pokemon against Full Metal Alchemist? Probably not... But they still know the name of pretty much every Pokemon (and so do their younger siblings and friends - possibly people that don't even watch much anime). But Pokemon won't make it onto the list because those of us that are into anime know that there are better shows out there. Maybe this video should be called 'The most popular anime according to anime fans'.

I don't think the anime here are "popular", they are just highly rated. For example, Saudi Arabia has date a Live, but this doesn't mean a lot of anime viewer have seen it, for all we know it could just be a few hundred date a Live fans giving it a high score. It also explains why a popular show like FMA couldn't make, it's because a lot of people rated that show, which includes low scores too, thus lowering the overall score. As Finnish person I would like to say that we don't have necessarily too much love for Weed, but there was made 4 parted movie that was made for Finland with Finnish dub. At least for me that has been a nostalgic tear jerker, but I never could get into Weed that aired in japan. If interested you can see movies 1, 2 and 4 on KZbin. Just type Hopeanuoli into the search as it was the Finnish name for this series and translates to Silver arrow. Unfortunately this doesn't have English subs at least on KZbin and the quality may deter people since it's that old series.
