People meet online every day and date. This was a horrible incident and victim-blaming doesn't help anything here. That said, it wouldn't be a bad idea to met someone in person at a public place and get to know them before inviting them inside your own home especially if you have wealth. And, sharing wealth online can be an invitation for criminals as well, but that can be difficult to maintain in a home business, etc.
