During our very fist show, I was standing at the side of the stage to watch Stevie play for the very first time, to see what "all the fuss was about"......and after Stevie was done playing his set, I was AFRAID to get on the stage to do MY show, because Stevie put me to shame. Heck, I went to a Jimi Hendrix concert back in 74. Tower of Power came on first and blew the audience away. We kept on wanting more and they played extra. Im pretty sure Hendrix felt uneasy about coming on stage. Voodoo Child is a Hendrix song and SRV kills it. There is no better.

I would like to believe that Stevie made Jimi very very proud. Stevie said he was having problems with a section of Voodoo Child. One night Jimi came to him in a dream and taught him to play the section he was struggling with. I can't even imagine the magic they are making, wherever they are now!

You're right Texas Magnolia. Stevie was someone I looked to for style and attitude as far as my guitar playing. I will never hold a candle to what he gave to Texas blues or his artistic ability with guitar, but he certainly was an influence. I didn't know him but one of my buddies did along with Chris Layton, Tommy Shannon, and Doyle Bramhall. What you say is exactly what they have said.

I remember Eric Clapton once commented that when SRV was his opening act back in the day. That after watching Stevie play his set several nights in a row, reluctantly he had to stop watching him, even though he enjoyed it very much. Clapton commented that it was because as he watched Stevie perform, he soon realized that no matter what song he was playing, he never missed a note, improvised flawlessly and was never "lost" at any time during a solo. Clapton understood that he could not always say the same for himself, and admitted it was intimidating and difficult to follow SRV knowing this.

@@edwardmunson3896 Give Clapton’s Five Long Years a listen. The two were completely different styles of players. Stevie is full on pentatonic box, with few exceptions, which limits his creativity BUT he absolutely slays within that box, which is incredible. Clapton is different. Clapton plays between the intervals and very rarely stays in the box, although he usually will resolve a phrase in the box. This kind of improvisation is much more complex and very very few can pull it off. I’m from Austin, so we’re all big fans of SRV here, but I’m also a musician and Stevie is playing the same 8 phrases in different orders, this is why he nails it every time. There’s almost no risk for him, but it’s also how he can get so emotive from a 1 or 2 notes and his vibrato is so incredibly wide (Claptons is a lot narrower). Both are excellent musicians and SRV definitely was influenced by Clapton, everyone who plays guitar is, especially Boomers like Stevie.

That's Tommy Shannon on bass, and Chris "Whipper" Layton on drums. One of the most badass rhythm sections in rock/blues history. They both still live in Austin and still play, especially Chris. Just talked to him when he played with Sue Foley at Antone's Record Store the other day.

My introduction to SRV was in 1982 in Houston Texas. A friend kicked my door in, dragged my ass to Fitzgeralds in the Heights on a Sunday afternoon. Wouldn't tell me who, what, or anything. He paid the 2 dollar cover charge. We got our seats, a skinny kid wandered onto the stage and said, "Hi y'all' and started to play, by the 3rd note my jaw was on the ground. Have seen Stevie live 6 times. Each time was a revelation in music. I am glad you got to see his videos, but Brother, ain't nuthin' like SRV and Double Trouble Live!!!!!

I won tickets to a Joe Cocker concert on the radio. I was STOKED because Cocker was ON FIRE at the time. Couldn't wait. I asked a friend about the other act I'd be seeing that night. "Oh, he's a blues guy. GREAT guitar player. You'll like him." They were switching off Opener/Closer on the tour. On this night, Cocker went first... and he was like 3x better than I expected. SRV was a self taught guitar player. He used to hang around the blues club when he was young. He met and played with some of the greatest R & B cats of all time!!! SRV was part of the Oak Cliff, TX brigade. Check out Rocky Athas. A friend of SRV and a fantastic guitar player in his own right. Those were the days around Dallas, TX. Rocky Athas, SRV, Jimi Vaughn, John Nitzinger, Point Blank, Steve Miller and so many more. The clubs were always jumping.

In case you didn't know.....SRV was the younger brother of the also legendary Jimmy Vaughn, guitarist for The Fabulous Thunderbirds. They were super-tight as brothers. You can see some amazing videos on YT of those two brothers playing together on stage. Incredible stuff.

I always find it funny when people declare who the best guitar player is. It is like cars, some love Ford, Some Chevy, Some Mercedes, Some Porsche. All are great, but it is subjective. I can tell you that there has never been another Stevie, and a lot of wannabe Hendrix’s. Maybe that’s because Hendrix was a revolutionary, and SRV was perfection. No need to improve on it! The day SRV died, we closed the music store I worked at. We cried, then listened to his music for hours. Keep open minded, and our limits are boundless! You are kinda the gateway for a lot of people, as they look to you for music ideas. Love your reactions Professor!

I complained to my guitar teacher when I was younger that my hands just cant do this. He said no ones hands are supposed to do this, its hard work and muscle memory. This was the best motivation I got when I was first beginning guitar. 20 years later I'm glad I never gave up.

There is no one comparable to SRV. The great Eric Clapton once said he could only listen and watch Stevie for one or two songs before he had to leave or he would never be able to play a guitar again. Stevie was that amazing. SRV makes every human being want to pick up a guitar, and everyone who plays one just want to throw it into the corner.

Jimi revolutionized the way guitar was played. He made use of techniques and effects in ways that no one else had seen. Simply, he changed everything. His influence is so wide that it's hard to remember his career was only four years long (he died at 27). Stevie Ray, also a brilliant guitarist, had his own fiery style and I think continued to explore some of the boundaries Jimi pushed, and he had a longer career in which to do it (he was 35 when he was killed). Stevie Ray considered Jimi his greatest inspiration. I don't think it takes away from either man's legacy to say they both stand on top of the hill.
