Anne wasn't perfect, she had a bad temper, but she wasn't really a "mean girl" that image was created by Henry after Anne was beheaded Anne helped the poor a lot, she was really into politics. She had no choice, her family literally pushed her to be Henry's lover (which by the way, if he chose you, You couldn't reject him) And then she married Henry, But if it wasn't Anne it was someone else She really wasn't as bad as Six makes her out to be, and the musical's writers themselves apologized for making her seem so bad Henry even said that she was dressed in yellow at the end of Catherine of Aragon When multiple witnesses testified that this was false. She was a woman in a time when women only had one job And not opinion I'm not saying she was a white dove, but it was Henry who did everything he could to make Anne his queen, and if it wasn't Anne it would be someone else because Catherine wasn't giving him any male children. That was what his wives were worth, the only one that Jane loved, coincidentally she was the only one who gave him a son There is not even any proof that Anne cheated on him, Henry made that up, she did not give him any sons and he wanted to move on to the next wife She had a daughter, who became an incredible queen.
@milliegoodwin53892 ай бұрын
Even Jane wasn't immune; she just didn't stay alive long enough to upset him as much as the others The one time she tried to stand up to Henry; she was threatened with being beheaded like Anne

I think part of the public was also more willing to accept this narrative because of the major change her marriage represented. The first Queen was there for a long time and so it was a shock when Henry created a whole new church seemingly to cast her aside for this other woman. Now obviously we know it was mostly the heir thing, but I could see someone without our wider view being really upset or shocked by that. When the King then started making these accusations about her being a vile temptress it seemed to fit the narrative they already suspected. Doubly so since as you mentioned King Henry could realistically have any mistress he wanted without this upheaval.

Personally I don’t think Anne was painted in a bad light in the musical at all. Yes they didn’t tell her true story but I don’t see anything that really makes her bad in this musical.
@lillimay982 ай бұрын
She's portrayed as the one who chased the king but Anne actually tried really hard to avoid Henry's interest. Her sister Mary had been one of Henry's mistresses and Anne didn't want to be persued then cast aside like she had been, she wanted to marry someone of her own station. But when she told Henry she wouldn't sleep with him unless they were married, instead of him losing interest and moving on to another woman willing to be his mistress, he did everything he could to make it happen. After all that well, what was she meant to do?

The music for six is incredibly simple. There are 4 member of the band on stage: Maggie - guitar Bessie - bass Joan- Keyboard Maria - drums. They would sometimes play other instruments. However they usualy have these 'roles', named after popular ladies of waiting in the Six court. (E.g Maggie is Lady Mergret Lee, who servedd Anne bolyn) Its so cleverly done, with the whole cast and band being all women!

I mean the song oversimplifies a lot of things for the sake of fitting it into a 3-4 minute song but Anne was known for having a short temper. A lot of things she says in the song she supposedly actually said in passing that just got around (he doesn't wanna bang you somebody hang you, if you could get it up, etc).

This song is ridiculously catchy and so, SO misrepresentative of Anne Boleyn. Not saying she was an angel- as has been pointed out elsewhere in the comments, she was in over her head when it came to her situation; when the king says "I pick you", you get picked, that's that. After that, it was a bitter struggle for her, and a lot of the public perception of her comes from how Henry lied about her-- and again, when the king says something, that's the version everyone will accept, because he's the king. She gave him Elizabeth, who would be the Tudor to claim the throne in the end, after all of his machinations to try and get a male heir (each of the queens were chosen and discarded for this reason, barring some exception). She was eventually executed, with excuses conjured by Henry's ego and temper (and again, she even points out here that he wasn't exactly loyal to HER, either), and her name has had to endure being dragged through the mud- including, unfortunately, this musical's portrayal of her. But her legacy endures anyway. Anne got the final revenge with her daughter going on to be one of the most famous monarchs of all time. 😁

When mentioning accents and pronunciation it's helps to remember how they based each Queen's music style on certain contemporary female artists, and Anne Boyeln is partly based on Lilly Allen who sings in a very British accent!

Listening to different national casts makes it obvious that - except for one song coming up where they all use an over-the-top fake German accent - they aren't really attempting to use authentic accents.

Anne was incredibly smart and progressive for her time. She wanted to take the money from dissolving the monasteries to fund alms houses for the poor. (It is suspected that Anne was actually involved in the passing of the Poor Law that pushed for those in power to help the unemployed get jobs) Anne actually avoided Henry's advanced for quite a long time (I think 7 years?) before they got married. And the whole creation of the Church of England is because she adamantly refused to be his mistress and told him if he wanted to be with her, Anne would have to be his wife. The Pope refused to annul the marriage (smth about Politics regarding the Roman Empire which Catherine was related to) so Henry split from the Catholic church and formed his own. Another not often mentioned reason for refusing to be his mistress is guessed to be because of how she saw her sister Mary Boleyn get mistreated as Henry's mistress before her. As for Anne's supposed cheating, she was accused of sleeping with a bunch of people in court, including her own brother. All but one denied ever doing so and the one that confessed to having sexual relations with her did so after being subject to torture.
@Qsalis2 ай бұрын
I believe I heard that she at some point of the "process" had to choose between her daughter's good standing and her own + life so she sacrificed herself to give her child a chance. Whatever she admitted to in the end is probably an extension to that.

The small amounts of strings you hear during the chorus is pizzicato strings, which reveal her playful truth, and the verses use power chords to show Anne’s rise to power. You can learn a lot more about this in the video about this song from Howard Ho, he makes video essays on how songs work and he covered a few songs from Six! I definitely recommend watching those after you listen to a song! Can’t wait for the rest of Six!

Since you seem to be covering historically based musicals (lol) I would love if you, or you and Mortius, covered the musical "Come From Away". Unfortunately, there're aren't animatics for it like there has been for the other shows but it is one of my favorite musicals. I don't know how much you would want to know so I won't even say what historical event it is about but all of the stories and plots in the show come directly from interviews with the real people and the instruments and music is heavily inspired by the location. Even if you don't react on your channel to it I would definitely recommend checking it out on your own. You'd have to watch the pro shoot like you are with Hamilton and you'd have to watch the scenes in between because you really need the context. The songs and scenes are so intertwined

And its the start of this one that made me remember that, I'm always mixing up Anne Bolyn's story/song with Katherine Howard's which is part of y she ends up being the one I forget the most. Continuously attributing things to Anne that were actually Katherine Howard, resulting in her being the one I forget more. Smh. Anyway, that does mean that Howard is the one with, in my opinion, the second best if not best personal song of the musical. "All You Wanna Do" is catchy n heartbreaking n her vocals r insane in it. Sadly just like Anne of Cleeves gets forgotten frequently by most ppl from being the second divorcé and "other Anne", Katherine has the disadvantage of being sandwiched between the Catherines (1 of 3, alrhough the advantage of the different spelling), having a name that's by comparrison, a bit too simple n modern, and being the "other beheaded one". Being in the latter half of the wives kinda just puts ur name at a severe disadvantage in terms of remembrance since the first 3 had distinct names and results from one another. The only reason I remember Anne of Cleeves so well is cuz her story wound up being my favorite both in and outside of the musical. Its easier to remember ur favorite story. But I definitely wanna remember Katherine Howard is my second favorite of the wives with my second or first favorite song in the musical. Maybe the different spelling will be enough to make me remember this time 😅 I'm saying all this cuz I left a comment under the Ex-Wives reaction that had Anne Bolyn as my second favorite with my second/first favorite song. Her song gets second or third place. I'm not giving difinitive song placements cuz I always forget how much I actually like Anne of Cleeves' song. I think its one that I actually didn't like on my first listen so i'm always forgetting if it ended up taking first or not. Anyway, on with the reaction lol Edit: looked it up cuz it was bothering me n whoopes. Its the opposite, Catherine is her spelling, Katherine of Aragon and Kateryn Parr. Also its 2 e's in Cleves, not 3. Figured i should add that rq
