I got bashed on an historical video for saying that yes, it was different times but 13 is still 13...we don't know his age for sure but most likely her music teacher Henry Mannox was still way older than her and still makes their relationship very exploitative. Many claim it was normal to marry so young but really it wasn't, it happened usually only with royalty and in very specific circumstances. I read quite a bit about Katherine Howard and nobody can change my mind that she was only a child, used and abused by pretty much everyone around her. She is the most tragic of the wives and I really do feel for her even if she died centuries ago.

right? Her life didn't end just because she died/beheaded, her life ended up the moment it happened again, and again, and again. Something i don’t see mentioned/noticed a lot, is how even in the first chorus she says "This guy is different" which implies that even at that age, at 13 years old, that was STILL not the first guy to take advantage of her. Yeah. Just a not so fun fact i don’t see people talk about enough

Same, she says “take my first music teacher” which most assume means her first abuser, but she’s giving an example using a 40ish year old man for the sake of the line “he was 23, I was 13 going on 30” which actually meant that he was about 30 years older than her. “This guy is different” seriously implies he wasn’t the first.

Sam Pauly is the one singing in the clip you watched. She’s part of the Broadway cast. Honestly her performance is soooo good at portraying going from a naive kid (13) who was unwittingly taken advantage of to a 17-19 year old who has come to realize that she’s been abused and taken advantage of for most of her very short life. She was still a teenager when she was beheaded. The studio version is good and I’ll never say the singing is bad, but Sam’s live performance just really sucker punches you. There’s even times when it’s dead silent after she finishes her number because it was that visceral for the audience. Just, so good.

I think the thing is that Sam specifically is really good at getting across the darkness of it all by the end. I've seen other live performances and hers is 100% the most gutwrenching portrayal I've seen. You could actually, if you don't catch the lyrics clearly and are just bopping along, you might think it gets sad/dark at the end bc she's getting beheaded. But it's really just the culmination of a lifetime of grooming and abuse. But Sam is good at getting across even early on that everything isn't ok.

Samantha Pauly, the singer who plays Katherine Howard, is so incredibly talented that she conveys her emotions beautifully. Even when the choreography is still lively, she shows looks of fear and insecurity while masking everything with a smile. This song is extremely tragic, but it's still my favorite song in the show. The delivery in Sam's voice and performance, the choreography and the band is simply perfect. Katherine was just a teenager when she passed, she should have been protected. The sad thing is that in her part in "Ex Wives" she sings "Lock up your husbands, lock up your sons K Howard is here, and the fun's begun", initially we thought it was about her going after these men, when in reality, she just wants them away from her, because the fun is already over.

One of the most tragic things about K. Howard that will randomly pop into my mind and hurt me repeatedly is that the night before she was killed, she was so concerned with "making a good death" (basically meeting certain image/religious requirements) that she asked for the block to be brought to her chambers and spent the night practicing kneeling down and laying her head on it. The image of this probably* teenage girl mostly alone in her room laying her head on the same block that she would take her last breath on the next morning just stabs me every time I think about it. (*I think I saw it mentioned in another comment, but just to clarify, we don't have any extant record of her birth or age, so historians have estimated that she was anywhere from 16 to 21 at the time of her death, with most believing she was 17ish.)

Anne Boleyn has been done wrong by history. There are long stretches in their "courtship" where she straight up ran away to Northern England to avoid being around him and he just kept after her. History paints it like she was playing hard to get, but she even tried to marry someone else that would have been very advantageous for her and the king's advisor killed it. She was, by all accounts, very smart and kind of a bitch, but I'd argue if she'd been born a man that would have made her extremely politically popular. It wasn't lack of fidelity or a son that got her killed, it was that Henry got sick of being with a woman that called him on his shit. It's telling that the wife he liked best was the one that was the most submissive to him.
@melindoranightsilver92984 сағат бұрын
Most likely the most submissive, the only one to give him a son and she died early in the marriage so she couldn't get sick of her.

Listen, as someone who was KHoward, I appreciate people who are uncomfortable about it because I am essentially desensitized to it. I don't think about how it effects people who haven't personally experienced it because in my personal world it was life. I often forget that not everyone has experience in such matters until I see reactions like this It sucks that people experience it at all but unfortunately there are just terrible people who do terrible things to people who can't save themselves So from KHowards point of view, if you feel you have to skip over certain things or even just skip entire songs, it's perfectly okay. There's no offense in just not being able to do it. It's a big problem that people often demand big reactions to and sometimes the best decision is to just acknowledge it exists and move on

Something I want to point out within the music, if you listen in on the third and finale version of the chorus you can hear siren like sounds that go "wee-woo wee-woo" in the back round that aren't in the first two times the chorus plays. I don't know what it actually means within the musical but I really think it's supposed to be like a danger motif. The first one showing the danger of her meeting and getting married to Henry in the third chorus and then the signifying of her being in danger and about to be beheaded in the fourth chorus. It's something not a lot of people point out cause it's such a subtle detail but I love sharing that with people. For reference the first time it plays is at 28:48.

Catherine Howard, while not acting like this in real life, this is supposed to reflect her life as a child who was expected to satisfy the needs of the men in her life. Due to her father's poor gambling decisions and money usage, she was neglected as a child and left with the feeling of being unwanted. She was barely literate and was "generally unlearned." Her only purpose was to be married away, just like most women in that time. Henry Mannox, the man who was supposed to educate her, just used this moment to take advantage a barely teenage girl. Then passed to other men, Dereham, Culpeper, and then King Henry. There was also other allegations she was abused by other men as apparently there were people who "contacted her favors for their silence," blackmailing essentially. Famously upon her time of execution, she practiced her eventual death over and over, she wanted it to be perfect and die beautifully, practicing how her head should be placed upon the plaque, where her hair should be, her final words etc. The axe is her symbol and that is due to that was how she was executed, typically it was with a sword, but Henry was so angered by her "lack of purity," that he decided to punish her even more. The axe was not sharp though, she was frankly butchered. The axe ruined her plan for a perfect death, it got stuck in the neck and it did not go through so the executioner cut over and over into her neck until it went through, causing great anguish and pain. Catherine's body did not last through history either. It disappeared suddenly and there are many theories on why this happened, there's quite a popular theory that her body was inlaid with lime, and since she died so young, her bones would still be brittle and it would dissolve to dust. Potentially hiding that she even existed even to the tests of time. She was buried in a unmarked grave, and eventually everyone else forgot about her story too.

The Brittany Spears vibes are correct. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but each of the queens have musical inspirations. K Howard is based on Ariana Grande and Brittany Spears.

The fact that Katherine Howard was 19 when she was killed, I think she was 17 when she got married to Henry. She was so young, and she really was just a kid who got exploited.

The "fairest of the fair" lime always kills me, because it's a kinda callback/mention of Snow White, "fairest of them all." Showing that KH was completely innocent, guys taking advantage of her, and also the reason why she got beheaded was she was "sleeping around" with other guys. A KID cannot CONSENT to any sexual action, PERIOD, does not matter if you're 17 or 5.

Exactly i was taught about henry viii and how the wifes died but not much about them. It was only when i started to read more about it as an adult i learned more about them.

1) This was Sam Pauly. Her portrayal remains my favorite in that role. 2) I think your English is quite good, for what it's worth! :) 3) The juxtaposition of the music being such a bop against the darkness of the story/lyrics makes the storytelling so much darker.

She sings those high notes effortlessly. It was also changed from the original version in London, which stayed upbeat to be more tragic at the end. A much better version.

I know everyone is so adamant about watching this song live so you can "see the emotions" (and the hands, everyone love to talk about the hands) but I always find it a disservice when reactors watch everyone elses studio performances, but this actress only gets her live played. Dont get me wrong, she sounds great live, but everyone else sounds 10x better only because they get their studio version played and she gets a video recorded secretly from the corner of the theater lmao

God this song is so good and so heavy and I get goosebumps every time I listen to the live version of it We’re never taught about what happened to his wives in history and it’s sad bc they were so important and did so much for their country despite everything they were put through

Was really, really hoping you got a heads up before you watched; so glad you did. It's a LOT. It's hard to listen to and harder to watch. (And when I saw it live, the people next to me had no warning!!)

oh NO. "I understand the trigger warnings now" made me groan "oh nooo you don't" out loud
