I set up backup inverter power in my House. The wife thought it was silly and pointless... until the power went out in the middle of winter when it was 20 degrees outside. I was out of town at the time and I get a phone call... “thank you honey, you were right...” victory for the husband!

I’d like to please reiterate what he said as far as just plugging the inverter to the wall and back-feeding the panel. NEVER DO THIS. Unless it is an absolute emergency. And if you do, make sure 10000% the main breaker is OFF. If you don’t do this, you’re back-feeding the grid and transformers work both ways. So when you back-feed your 120/240 power, it gets stepped up to the 7.2kv/13.8kv in most neighborhood transmission lines. Therefore if the issue is in your line, you can kill the dude trying to fix it. Make sure to use a proper generator panel and transfer switch.

Even if someone forgets that, the protection of the inverter will be turned on and interrupt its power. Except that if people get their appliances unplugged every time there is power outages then it will not cut the power. Though, it is a safety practice because 1, for the people working in the power line and 2, when the power is back, your inverter will be damaged.

I like your quality back feed setup, about 15 years ago I did that as well in an emergency! First turn off your main! even if you don’t turn off anything else ..turn off your main .. anyways I got a 7500w generator split phase and I wire up a NEMA 14-50 male to male go I could get my home power quickly .. after that clean up the install putting a dedicated back feed circuit with a blockout plate .. the block out plate prevent you from turning on the back feed circuit without turning off the main breaker .. very cheap and simple setup .. when I added batteries I got a ATS between the generator and the battery connected to the back feed circuit .. Great 👍 content keep the,m coming.. I do need to upgrade my crazy old DIY power wall ..

One tip: do not store the fire extinguisher directly near the potential fire source. In the case of a fire it may otherwise become inaccessible to you, due to fumes, heat etc. This is standard fire safety. Place it adjacent, not above the potential fire source with enough distance so its unlikely to be rendered inaccessible.

Cool behind the scenes and thank you for warning people to not backfeed their homes... I've seen a couple of youtubers over the years suggest that idea and it's generally speaking a really bad idea because ya it only takes one missed breaker here or there.... I mean all the ways this could go wrong - miss your disconnect breaker - put both inverters on the same circuit by mistake - overcurrent the circuit (e.g. using a 15A circuit to backfeed multiple 15A circuits) - forget to disconnect 240V circuits - Your inverter might have a GFCI and not like that the circuits neutral doesn't return to the inverter (the breakers only break the live/hot leg) and so on. In a proper sub-panel/transfer you move both the live and neutral over to the inverter so that the grid is 100% disconnected.

Hi Jehu, love your videos, I'm an electrician, listening to your "split phase" and some of your other thought on 240 volt: residential and commercial 240volt power is all single phase, typically it's all a 240volt power source with the center tapped "neutral or white", this neutral is then bonded / grounded so it has power but no potential power to ground which is why you don't get shocked from touching the white, it's referred to as the "grounded" conductor. Three phase is found in commercial and industrial situations 208/120v and 480/277 systems

Glad i'm intelligent and educated enough to have realized the utmost importance of throwing the main breaker switch off prior to attaching lines from that battery combobulation into the house wiring. You want to know such things and its good you included that tidbit of useful vulcan knowledge upfront, or things would end up going boom when the grid power lines suddenly became reactivated. Rock on, oh, and cool 2nd floor level to the shop with full carpeting even. Ok, install the zipline, or the skateboard park pools that can be raised or folded when not in use, folding like those special camera lens covers with the 5 or so segments that spin to create or turn the pool shape into a out of the way wall mounted chair rail. This concludes this interactive dialogue using this digital telegram, while practicing safe social distancing in a manner of which you have no requirement to even reply back to, though can though i don't think you will.

You could *NOT* ever power your house, during a black-out, without first disconnecting the Main Breaker. Therefore, your scenario of the Power re-activating and burning up your Inverter simply cannot ever happen in the real world.

@@truetech4158 If you fail to turn off your Main Breaker first, then your Inverter will fail IMMEDIATELY when powered up. It will either blow its Circuit Breaker or it will Smoke. Either way, your inverter cannot back feed the grid and therefore it cannot be ON and connect to the grid when the Grid power is restored. So, there is no possibility that your scenario "... or things would end up going boom when the grid power lines suddenly became reactivated ..." can ever happen.

If you just plug an inverter in to an electric outlet and feed back to a panel without proper steps taken it can backfeed to the grid and delay the power being turned back on in a timely fashion. I've witnessed it myself. In this case however it a generator plugged in the way you described of using the extension cords with the male plugs on each end. Two hours they searched the block studying the trees looking for an why the neutral was showing current. As soon as I asked my neighbor if he had pulled off the leeds from generator the guy called cleared on the radio. Within a minute the power was restored...

Why else do the utility companies have a separate style of meters and switch gear for any building with a solar or generator applications being added to a building? It's because they want your system isolated for their safety. If there is an power outage and your system is working properly they themselves will not get electrocuted by your equipment.

It's crazy you get so many powers cuts in the US, I'm in the UK and can't even remember when my last one was, maybe 2 years ago? - even then it was 2 hours at most. I also don't understand why you don't use 240v like most of the world, I have a washer/dryer that plugs in a normal plug and even newer ovens now can too! We also only need a little bit extra done to fit a 7.4kw EV charger.

Hi Jehugarcia, I’m trying to recall if you had once done a review of the Drok Vac9010h Hall effect meter. Please send me a link especially where you may have explained the functionality settings or relay. I recently purchased the item at amazon and need to program the relay settings. Unfortunately, the product manual that comes with it, is written in such poor English, that trying to comprehend what the manufacturer is conveying in the settings section is simply impossible. I’m ok with the electrical wiring of the device though. Regards, and thank you for your good work... Yours subscriber, Jesse.

How much enclosed space, like a utility room, should they plan to build? Like a 4x6 walk in closet off of the garage?

Have you thought of wind power to charge your batteries?
@Jehovahstool
@Jehovahstool 3 жыл бұрын
I like the thought of wind power helping to recharge your batteries, since the Santa Ana winds are the culprit use the wind power to recharge your system even if you don't have solar. I would suggest a few lantern style wind generators that can give you the power you need. Besides, they are not huge blade units and you could consider dumping the excess power after your system is charged into a hot water tank to reduce your natural gas if you are using natural gas to heat your hot water. Keep up the great vidz and it would seem to have a system in place activity ready for a grid down event would be the better way to encourage your watchers to be best. To help us not just build battery systems and arrays but to make them practical and usable. Like you did in Puerto Rico to help them get through their power crisis and survive the challenges they faced at that time they were without power. I salute you for your efforts because you did they darn thang helping them through.
