I had a similar situation with a girl I adored. We watched Schindler's List. She didn't bat an eyelash and said the movie was forgettable. Then we watched a movie of her choice "Hook" with Robin Williams and she balled her eyes out because " ooooooooh the old man found his marbles." That level of disconnect proved to me we were not suited to one another.

I don't like her the best of the list--I mean, I like her, but not the best out of these--but she just had a movie out last year, with George Clooney. It hurts that he didn't know Sally Field or Shirley MacLaine, but Julia Roberts was the surprise. He has a lot of movies to watch, but I probably can't name people from stuff he''s watched either. The play takes place entirely at Trudy's beauty shop so all the scenes we see in the movie at other locations are just talked about at the shop. I have a friend that I have performed with at our local community college theatre stage that is playing Shelby in a production of the play at the end of July. She's now 39 so it is a credit to her youthfulness that she can pull off playing a 20 something. I and my my wife are looking forward to seeing this production. I have seen it staged once before and it is even more powerful if you can believe it on stage.

I enjoyed your reaction to Steel Magnolias I’m fortunate to have grown up near that beautiful little town, which is where the real story took place. The story originated as a play, written by “Shelby’s” brother. It’s the true story of his sister, their family, and the women of that town who supported them through their loss. In part, he wrote it because his former brother-in-law, Shelby’s husband, remarried within 6 months of her death. He heard his little nephew call the new wife “mommy” and wanted to make sure, as M’lynn said, that the boy knew how wonderful his mother was and what she went through for him. Not only was the film shot in the town of the real story, but the hospital was the hospital that treated her and where she died. The doctor was “Shelby’s” real doctor.

Interesting trivia: The movie is based on a stage play, also called Steel Magnolias, written by Robert Harling. He based the character of Shelby (the daughter with Type 1 diabetes) on his sister, who died from Type 1 diabetes in 1985. Harling was born in Alabama but went to school in Louisiana, earning a law degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, but decided to pursue writing and film instead. He appears in a cameo in this film as a minister. Two other films he wrote that are well known are "Soapdish" (which also has Sally Field in it), and "The First Wives Club" (with Bette Midler, the lead witch in Hocus Pocus).

I’m a transplant patient and a dialysis patient so I understand a lot about Shelby. You where talking about ceranwrap (totally misspelled) during such a funny story. They wrap that around the hair sometimes for the coloring process. When I color my hair I have to do it too so it’s not only women who do that. You totally need to watch Fried Green Tomatoes! It’s another Southern film and it’s amazing writing and acting.

Shirley MacLaine(Weezer)🔥🔥🔥I see her in this era and can’t help but remember her how she looked, acted and danced in so many great movies. She’s done it all. Has been making movies for close to 70 yrs. Has won many awards. “The Children’s Hour”(1961) and “Sweet Charity”(1969), “Terms of Endearment “(1983), “Irma La Douce”(1963), “Artists and Models”(1955) with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin and my personal favorite “Madame Sousatzka”(1988). The list is long. She’s still around acting and almost 90 yrs old 🌟🌟🌟

James, sweetie! I am astounded that you are able to say that you don’t know who Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts are!!? Woooah, Nelly-you’re a brave, lovely gentleman for admitting such things. I’m sure your Patreon will agree that you are in need of watching at least the following three films ASAP! 1. Some Came Running (1958), MacLaine’s dazzling debut performance that earned her a Oscar nom 2. Moonstruck (1987), amongst several other IN-CRED-IBLE performances you’ll find Dukakis delivering her best supporting actress Oscar winning performance. 3. Erin Brockovich (2001)/Pretty Woman (1991) - a neck & neck tie imho for best performances that Roberts took Oscar awards for leading actress. Such diff characters & contexts. She got a best supporting actress nom for this role in Steel Mag’s. Love your guts, James! Your last continues to be one of my favorite of all reviewers on KZbin. I had a friend once who was a brittle/insulin dependent diabetic and anyone who knew her well enough could tell when her blood sugar levels had dropped because she would have this like she was in outer space or something and she would respond to her name and she would crying softly. Anyway, the first person to notice that she was having what pretty much everyone referred to as a sugar attack would shout out that she needed medical help and someone would come over and gently guide her over to the first aid room and help her check her blood sugar levels and they would give her some juice and something to eat to get her blood sugar levels back up and they would also sit with her until she was okay again.

I watched your reaction b/c this is one of my favorite movies. Seen it countless times. The genuine warmth, kindness and love between the characters reminds me of my own family in the past. It is heartwarming. It is also one of the only films I see diabetes depicted in a realistic way. For sure, there are some diabetics that do not have it as badly. Unfortunately, I can tell you from my own experience that I am also 'special' like Shelby. I have the worst insulin resistance and other medical conditions that require medications that elevate blood sugar. I see online that others can take 8 units of insulin and be fine. I take 100 units long acting 2x day and 30-40 short acting with meals. I also take Janumet (combo metformin and Januvia) and Glipizide. So 5 meds and I still have to be on a very low carb diet and I still struggle with it. My kidney function is not that great. I appreciated the scene of the low sugar. It is spot on. There can also be other unpleasant symptoms. Treating the other medical condition caused my blood sugar to become so elevated that it destroyed my immune system. What I actually had was diabetic ketoacidosis and invasive fungal sinusitis (Aspergillis niger). I nearly died from both of them. I had an emergency surgery and then 2 follow up surgeries. They severed the trigeminal nerve and removed bone as well as tissue. I spent 3 weeks of hell in 3 hospitals and months recovering. My recovery was extremely rough as well. It took me months to feel remotely normal. I have permanent nerve damage in my face. I have to take 150 mg Pregabalin for the severed nerve. This is the short version. The detailed one is much more horrifying. Now I just have to keep my sugars under 300 to have a functional immune system and sinus flushes for a year. Anyway, I hope this wasn't a huge bummer for everyone after such a heartwarming film, but I was hoping this would be informative for some. If you are on the verge of becoming diabetic, please get on metformin asap. Please try to eat healthy and eat whole grains or lower carb. I hope that sharing my story will make people more empathetic toward Type 2 diabetics who are blamed as if we have brought this on ourselves. In my case, I have PCOS and it makes you not only likely to get diabetes, but have extreme insulin resistance. For some of us, type 2 is also genetically linked. At any rate, I hope this cautionary tale will motivate people to avoid diabetes any way they can, and make sure if you do have it, that you do whatever you need to do to control your blood sugar. The dire consequences were not clear to me before getting so sick. Not really. And my doctors let me down. Make sure you get doctors who will care enough to hold you and themselves accountable. I nearly died twice and very fortunately lived to tell the tale. I hope no one else ever has to go through what I did and that hearing my story may prevent others from having to experience anything like it themselves.

I'm sending you big (gentle) hugs and lots of love, I also have PCOS and its not fun. When I was diagnosed (at 16) not much was known about it other than "it might be harder for you to get pregnant", so doctors downplayed it a lot. I don't know if they just didn't want to frighten a young girl or there was just no research, but 30 years later, I hope they're educating girls the way they should so they can live their best, healthiest lives.

I was a child when I first saw this movie and it’s been one of my favorites ever since. This movie is based on a true story, which one of the brothers turned into a play then a movie for his nephew ( the boy Shelby had ). What happened was the kidney transplant failed, she went in for a procedure to help with her dialysis and she didn’t wake up from it. She fell into a coma and then the family decided to take her off life support. The husband remarried 5 months after she passed away. The brother / uncle wanted to wanted something so his nephew could remember his mother and her family by. He wanted to show the love of friends and how they can help you in dark times. The brother is in the movie too, he’s the pastor who marries and also who presides over the funeral.

The husband of Shelby (Dylan McDermott) was in a great film in 1997 'Til There Was You... A romantic comedy, one of my favorites I've watched it a million times.

I first saw the play this is based on back in the 80's. Don't worry, we all sobbed our eyes out when Shelby died. You'll love all these women's movies.

Please consider watching A River Run Through It. It’s a beautiful movie about growing up in Montana. Narrated by Robert Redford, starring Tom Skeritt, Brad Pitt and Craig Shiffer. I know you will love it.

Daryl Hannah was the divorced daughter in Grumpy Old Men, and she was Annelle (the apprentice hairdresser to Dolly Parton) in this one.

My mother and I went to see this and the funeral scene had me weeping. My mother had the unfortunate experience of watching her father die before her eyes - so I was not only crying for Shelby but worried sick about how my mom was taking the scene. When Clairee did the “here, hit HER” line, my mother let out the biggest laugh and couldn’t stop. I was more like “how can you LAUGH right now?” Having lost both her and my only sibling (with just my dad left) I totally get it now.

As others have already said in the comments, Steel Magnolias is a true story written by Shelby's brother - the real-life brother is the pastor who weds Shelby and her husband in the movie. IRL, Shelby's husband remarried just 5 months after her death.

When this movie came out me and my girlfriends rented it and all our husbands were friends and at our house together. The guys were playing darts and they made fun of us calling this movie a chick flix. By the time the movie was halfway through, they were all sitting with us watching the movie and, at the end, saying how amazing the movie was. 😂❤

Some trivia about this film...Robert Harling wrote the play (which just place in Truvy's shop) this is based on as a way to cope with the loss of his sister, Susan (whom Shelby is based on) who passed of diabetic complications due to childbirth. The doctors and nurses that attended to "Shelby" in the hospital were the ones who actuslly did attend to Susan in her final days. They were also present for the scene when the "Eatenton's" decided to "pull the plug" on Shelby because they wanted to see Julia Roberts wake up and get out of the bed when Susan didn't. Robert also plays the officant that marries Shelby and Jackson and presides over Shelby's funeral. Sally Field's performance in that scene alone has become almost ICONIC its so good and she wasnt even nominated for an academy award that year!!

The title of the film is so apt. These women were steel magnolias. Tough as old boots and soft as a southern magnolia flower. Notice that the men in the film fall apart. Shelby’s dad and husband can’t stay in the hospital room when they turn off the life support, only the mother. Every time I see this film it makes me cry and laugh. And I saw it when it first came out! I wonder if the shoving scene on the cemetery bench with Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacLaine was improvised because they both are really laughing. Fabulous cast. Julia Roberts was just 19 when she made this and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress but didn’t win. Olympia Dukakis is the cousin of Michael Dukakis who ran for President in 1988. She’s great in Moonstruck playing Chers Mother. You should watch that.

Dolly Parton and Daryl Hannah are the only 2 women in that group that haven’t won Oscars. All of the other ladies are Oscar winners. I’m new to your channel and subbed. It’s rare to come across someone that doesn’t know who Julia Roberts is. I’m curious to see how this plays out. The movie “Pretty Woman” would really introduce you to Roberts. Look forward to more of your content.
