The invention of the wind driven saw mill here in the Zaan area made the Netherlands, turned the Netherlands into a mayor sea power early in the 1600s, and a world power, it all started with those saw mills.. the planks were used to build ships, and no more hand sawing.... Fast wind sawing.. the English could not keep up

Finally a youtuber who doesn’t show food in the travel videos and not much talking. Just some sightseeing and music. Love it. Also. Love the destinations you choose in NL. Not only Amsterdam but also Kasteel de Haar which not much people outside NL actually know, also good choice for Zaanse Schaans, Delft and Rotterdam (which i don’t recommend myself). For some extra destinations some far some nearby are: - Keukenhof - Tullip fields at Lisse - Leiden - Kinderdijk a UNESCO heritage site with 16-19 windmills - Volendam - Hoorn (VOC city) - S’Hertogenbosch or Den Bosch for short (one of the hubs for Carnival). - Maastricht 2nd oldest city in Netherlands (but more beautiful than 1st) - Veluwe Nationaal Park - Gouda - Middelburg - Deventer - Giethoorn (venice of the north) To be continued….

Busy schedule! Good that you left the US for a while, always good to experience life from a different angle. Very interested in the coming 2 weeks as well.

The countries she visited are very safe though. It's not like she's visiting a jungle.

Great choices, being from Belgium myself I only just went to Dinant this year, it’s kind of well known but not that well known. I liked it 👍

In Dinant you are south of the language border they speak a french dialect there but should be able to speak Dutch too, and thus English.. an old Dutch dialect.

Lille used to be dutch speaking and it was called Rijssel... The French took it in the 17th century, it used to be Flemish, just like Duinkerke was roo

This was filmed already quite a while ago. I live in Utrecht and I can confirm that the scaffolding at the Dom-tower church has already been removed for more than a month and it took lots of weeks to get rid of that. Nice that you visited my beautiful city. Many tourists only visit the obvious locations and many not so obvious locations are much more interesting. BTW: you pronounce Gouda a bit like GOW (like now) DAH.
@EmperorStorkyАй бұрын
There is only one way to pronounce Gouda and thats the correct way. Not like oh you pronounce it a bit like....
@jayandreas1131Ай бұрын
It starts with the same sound as the ending of the Scottish word Loch. 😁

a bit unlucky with the weather , at least in the Dutch part (haven't watched the rest yet) usually it's a lot sunnier in July ! Those windmills with the saws kickstarted the pre- industrial revolution before the steam engine... it made the dutch (and the other european countries) able to mass produce the many ships they needed to colonize most of Africa and large parts of Asia . it was a real revolution in ship building. I like that you gals are still making hand written travel diaries in this digital age. You future selves (and maybe offspring) will love these in 40 years when anything made by a current I-phone will be forgotten or at best stored in some old archive that nobody will remember

Belgium and the Netherlands used to be 1 country and the Belgium part was actually the Richer Part. That's why the Belgian old cities are even more posh and decorated than the Dutch ones.. But later Amsterdam took over as the more powerful city and in 1830 the Belgians decided they would rather be their own country.
@Joey-ct8bmАй бұрын
Those cities weren't Belgium build cities. They were part of the Roman empire like Bruges . Way before Belgium or the Netherlands existed. The Netherlands started they made the biggest empire in world. Belgium was always way poorer in those days. The Dutch even called Belgium the swamp lands in those days. You mean the period when the Netherlands and Belgium were still together as one. We immediately knew after that the Netherlands were way richer and good at trade. They became the richest nation of the world within 40 years. The biggest empire of the world in those days. The dollar is even named after the Dutch coin de Daalder. Wallstreet after the wall of the Dutch colony. Belgium was very good at slave trade, nothing else. Using Africans as guinea pigs for medicine too.

Antwerp was part of Brabant of the Netherlands. William of Orange's third wife, Charlotte de Bourbon, is buried in the Antwerp Cathedral of Our Lady. Antwerp was a big city at that time, from 1531 to 1997 they established the stock exchange in Antwerp, and is called the mother of all stock exchanges. The building is still there! Anyway... The Spanish plundered and set fire to Antwerp on November 4, 1576, which is remembered as the Spanish Fury and the Eighty Years' War that followed. As a result, many wealthy merchants, artists, scientists and craftsmen fled from Antwerp to the Netherlands. Many refugees thought that they could return to Antwerp after a while, but the war lasted no less than 80 years, which is why they started a new life in the Netherlands. This gave the Netherlands a solid boost in the development of their country.

Our countries were only actually united for 15 years. In all other times we have been seperate politically. It's still remarkable how many cultural similarities there are and we do still have a large shared history that goes beyond governments and borders.

@@walterverbeeck6929 in connection to the Spanish occupation. Zaanse Schans ( Zaans Fortress) Pentecost 1574 the Spanish were defeated there by rebel leader Diederik van Sonoy. The Spanish were driven from there to the swamps near Edam. The saying is that it is why Volendam is catholic and Edam is protestant and there are many dark headed Spanish looking people in Volendam. Still celebrated Derde Pinksterdag (Third day of Pentecost) as a day of liberation in the Zaan region. Also not even a mile from Zaanse Schans the paper was made for the first printed version of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. It was produced by Aris van der Ley. Only very recently I know Van der Ley is one of my ancestors.

Most Americans do not understand how close Dutch and English are. It are sibling languages with different influences but originating from the same source. It's a mix of words sounding alike and words written alike but all meaning exactly the same in both languages. Frisian is even closer to English. It's the reason Dutch people speak English relatively easy. Dutch are used to adept to other languages, the USA a lot less.
