Just popping in to say that you can order books at local bookstores, even if they don’t have them on the website. I buy all my books at the same bookstore in Antwerp and I just email them about the books I want. Then they get back to me if that is possible or not. The whole Brexit thing has really effed some things up, because some (English) books are just not available right now and if they are, they’ve been stockpiled by the large online stores so they are the only ones who can sell them… But it’s definitely worth the small effort of mailing the store to ask if they can order it.

1:20 - Never so much thought about this, because I'm totally a mood reader but I re-read things a lot. I mean, I have a TBR stack too, but it's rare that I don't get to a fiction book I bought for myself in a reasonable amount of time. Usually it's either slightly odd Christmas presents or certain non-fiction ('I should absolutely educate myself on the impact of United Fruit on Latin America...oof, but I already know that's gonna be depressing') that end up lingering.

Gibson is my favorite author! So surprised that Neuromancer isn't well known considering the resurgence of Cyberpunk popularity recently. So many booktubers are stumbling upon it just now. The man coined the term Cyberpunk and many related terms in Burning Chrome and Neuromancer. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it when it makes your TBR in the future.

@Tanya To give you an idea without spoiling it: His prose is unique and a lot of fun once you get used to it. It's clipped in an odd way. He isn't a science fiction writer who gets hung up on the science itself, but instead focuses on human reaction to changes in technology. It makes him a skilled futurist. It is very much still a future as envisioned by someone in the 80s though, with designer drugs, cybernetics, and virtual reality being major themes. The plot is good, and the characters are fine, if not too fleshed out. In his early books almost nobody had family because he didn't have a handle on how to write those interactions (paraphrasing his words). In short, it is obvious why it is a classic and he has the renown he does once you read it. My favorite book of his, and a good jumping off point if you don't want to start at the beginning, is Pattern Recognition. He switched gears in that trilogy to near future science fiction and it's much more accessible in that way. Plus it has an amazing opening line.

@Tanya I haven't listened to any audio books except for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It was hilarious in that format though. I prefer physical books for the most part. If you have any you'd like to recommend back I'd be interested.

I know what you mean by being excited by big writing lol. I'm reading the final empire atm and the formatting is so gross. Absolutely no line spacing, really thick text that looks like all of it is bold, such a strange decision for both things given it's a fantasy so it's dense enough without it being formatted to be even more of a dense read. I get that they don't want a super thick book and might be wanting to save space but COME ON. I zone out more with this book than any other I've been reading recently.

The Dragon Republic: the first 100 pages are so so but stick with it and then it takes OFF. And the last few pages are nuts. I know you said you were concerned about the political content, but it’s very fluidly written (I also don’t really like political intrigue and I thought it was well done) I really hope you enjoy Howl’s Moving Castle! It’s in my Top 3 favourite books of all time. It is so funny and cheeky. Diana Wynne Jones is my favourite author. Her stories are SO original and clever.

Maybe strict book buying ban is not for you. I apply the rule that I can only buy a book if I read a physical book that I own first. (no audio, e-books, library etc). It is weirdly satisfying to compare the lists of read x bought books and it makes me focus on my physical TBR more.
