I seriously needed to hear this from someone: “I dont need to be reading non-fiction all the time, sometimes you are already reading non-fiction all day, because you are studying” - I often forget that my 200 pages for uni a week are non-fiction and that it’s really okay to be burned out

Totally! I hate when people judge me for reading fantasy or romance stuff that is very easy and fast to read. I know these books aren’t classics, I don’t read them because I want to learn I read them because I want to give my brain a break from reading and learning the whole day. A lot of people don’t seem to understand that it is possible to like “shadow and bone” and “anna Karenina” at the same time :)

Just a heads up for Jane Eyre: it's more broody & dramatic than cozy & melancholy. More of a Wuthering Heights vibe than a Pride and Prejudice vibe, if that helps a little.

What about _Rebecca_ by Daphne du Maurier? I've only seen the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, but hear that they kinda changed the ending, making it more obvious that Mr. & Mrs. de Winter love each other, whereas it's left up to interpretation in the book.

@hfollman98
@hfollman98 3 жыл бұрын
Frankenstein is one of my all-time favs; I hope you enjoy! Also, Mary Wollstonecraft is Mary Shelley's mother! Good catch :) Piranesi does have a plot, it just takes a back burner until the middle/end. The beginning aligns us with 'Piranesi' by having us read his journals and fall in love with the House as he does. "Tender is the Flesh" is a really interesting read. I almost DNFed it because it seemed really slow and I didn't care about any of the characters, but the last line was worth the whole book. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I just finished Jane Eyre last week and I really enjoyed it! I'm also not a native speaker but it really wasn't one of the harder books I've read at all, the narrator uses fancy words here and there but even if you don't understand all of them, you're going to be just fine. And the autumn vibes truly were *chef's kiss*

@just_ella17
@just_ella17 3 жыл бұрын
@@julialovesgfriend I'm not a native speaker either and pride and prejudice was one of the first classics I've ever read in English and tbh I didn't really get to enjoy the book. I recently reread it, after having read four more Austen novels and a bunch of different English classics and the expierence was so much better. So I definitely do think that it is manageable and enjoyable for non-native speakers but not if you're a beginner with classics. If you want to try out Austen and maybe get a little used to her writing before going into pride and prejudice I would high key recommend Northanger Abbey. It is a lot shorter than p&p has a smaller cast of characters and is overall less complex, however still super fun and definitely a "core" Jane Austen novel.

The Secret History is a much longer book and it is a little heavier. So for your current mood, and if you want to go easier on yourself, Bunny would be a better choice. I'm reading Normal People by Sally Rooney. At first I thought I could vicariously know a bit of your personality from how much you liked it. But I realized it's near impossible. The book revolves around the magical understanding between Marianne and Connell that forms a time stopping bubble just for them. Even so they would still look at each other not saying a word, as if expecting the other could read minds, which produces the endless misunderstanding and drama as time goes on. The book also describes the psychological activities from the secondary characters, their thoughts are so typical in the people around us, which makes the book very clever. Anyway, how this book speaks to so many people, makes it impossible to know much about another reader who also likes it, just like it's impossible for the sun to know what night means. This is the first book I liked from an author that's around my age. Thanks to your genuine review. I guess that's something.

The best book I read in August was "Caraval" by Stephanie Garber. I love this book and it's a new favorite. I read Piranesi recently. I enjoyed it. It was unlike anything I've ever read before! ☺

FYI, book of the month has been around nearly 100 years. I absolutely loooooooooooved House of Leaves. It was engineered to be paced like a movie, and it definitely worked. I will definitely read it again.

Mixing classics, mistery and horror: Edgar Allan Poe! He wrote a lot of short stories, and a novel I really think u would enjoy is Gordon Pym!

Piranesi is one of my favorite books of the year! Bunny is also an old favorite and it does have some dark academia elements 😅 I liked Tender is the flesh (I thought it had some 1984 vibes) but it was so disturbing

If you liked Lord of the Flies and want to get into horror/sci-fi i suggest you read the Troop by Nick Cutter :) My fall list also include Jane Eyre (current read), Secret History, Ninth House, the Phantom of the Opera, Rebecca, a Discovery of Witches, the Name of the Rose, Diviners and some murder/mystery books!

Do not unhaul Night Film. I read it last autumn and loved it. It totally felt like a good movie. Granted, it got a bit tedious at the end, but all in all a great book. I definitely want to read more by her.
