Tbh I kinda like it when people call my art anime or anime-esque, while it might not show often, I really want to wear my inspirations on my sleeve, and while my artstyle didn’t start out from anime, it’s definitely heavily inspired by it. Wings of Fire started my art journey and touhou furthered it and I love how both are, even if very minimally, present in my personal style

As someone who only drew animals for years and then finally started drawing humans like last year: just got for it. My first humans were ugly ASF and mostly cat girls because I was still stuck in animal art. But now I'd say I'm pretty good at them :). whenever I hear about "eating art", I think of this: Maurice Sendak, creator of Where The Wild Things Are, once received a letter from a young boy (4 iirc). he then sent a letter back to him, accompanied with an original drawing. then, he got another letter from the boy's mom saying that he loved it so much that he ate it. Sendak went on to say that it was one of the greatest compliments that he has ever received.

I have an art confession that isn’t really mine, but my friend’s. So one day in art class we were doing an assignment on perspective. My friend decided to just trace an image online and then cut the edges of her paper so it would fit properly. (There’s more, that isn’t the confession). So she finished pretty quickly. While me and our other friends actually did the assignment, she then decided to turn her paper over and draw a MASSIVE, ULTRA-REALISTIC.. you know what… (a certain body part). And this thing was wayy too detailed, she put more work into that thing than her actual assignment. So anyways our art teacher walked around the classroom to see how everyone was doing. When she saw my friend’s perspective drawing, and looked confused as to why the edges were cut off. Then she turned the paper onto the back. And oh my god. The look on her facee 😭. Me and everyone at the table went silent for what felt like for ages (but was only like 2 seconds), and the teacher immediately turned the paper on the other side and was like “ummm anyways! 😀” As soon as she left the table we all burst out laughing and my friend was so embarrassed. Moral of the story: if you’re going to draw inappropriate art, DONT DO IT ON THE BACK OF AN ART ASSIGNMENT IN SCHOOL.

8:56 Honestly I didn't know that was a hot take (then again I never interact with the art community at large so what do I know. :P) but I agree "anime" isn't really an art style. To me it's like saying anime is a genre, even though it's simply another storytelling medium. Sure, there are tropes and cultural aspects and even some similarities in visual presentation that show up more often in anime than in other forms of animation, but anime encompasses such a diverse range of topics, genres, and styles that I don't think it can be distilled into some universal descriptor. Sailor Moon is completely different from Lupin III, which is different from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, which is different from Cowboy Bebop, etc... The only major things tying them together is the fact they're all animated and come from Japan (although some anime are produced by the same studio or share artists so more similarities pop up in those cases). Like OP said, anime is the Japanese term for animation in general, so it makes sense there's such a diverse range of media under that umbrella.
