Awesome vid man. You should pick up a set of some later wheels. The 99 5 spokes are pretty cool, there's also some sweet 3 spokes. You could sandblast and paint them and they'd look awesome with those tires!

Head gasket or transmission issues? I’ve heard the head gaskets go often on the first GEN and the transmission is problematic but apparently it’s just an ECU module and maybe a solenoid.
@Rgh71fish4 ай бұрын
@@williamperri3437 we just sold it a couple months ago and upgraded to a 2006 rav4 limited. The '98 was a good vehicle for us. It had 428,000 km on it when we sold it, and in the 2 years we had it I had to replace an alternator. That was it.

@@williamperri3437 it'd be around 267,000 miles. Ravs are super reliable vehicles that will run forever, with proper care. I think thats especially true for the original. If the world ever sees armageddon, the two things left will be cockroaches and 1st gen Rav4s lol.
@williamperri34374 ай бұрын
@@Rgh71fish oh man, maybe I should buy one. I looked at one with 170,000 that had a super stiff nice suspension but a little bit more rust on the body zero rust on the frame and the other one had 266,000 immaculate body and frame but about 95,000 more miles.

I have a 1996 2 door I put the OME kit on. It's been on for about 10 years now... I am a huge fan. Also- if you want to get rid of those grocery getter rims and tires, Jeep Sahara take offs work well here.. same bolt pattern. I think I am running 225 Hankooks with no issues

I have 15" Jeep wheels on mine, with 215/75 tires, which are 0.2" shorter than stock, but 0.4 more sidewall. RAV4 has no low range. Smaller tires = taller gear, so 215/70/15 or even 205/70/15 are options for zippier gears, and still gives a mild lift with the OME kit.
@enriqueb44129 ай бұрын
@@xxxYYZxxx I have the stock steel wheels. 16x6 wheel size is the way to go. I’m using 205/70r16 and it feels much better for the underpowered engine and 4WD.

They're not struts in the rear, they're called shocks. Struts are shock absorbers that also function as a suspension control arm, and are most commonly used only on the front suspension (with some exceptions)

I have the same kit. It's 1" in front, and 1.25" in the rear. I don't suggest using bigger tires either, because there's no low range. I also suggest considering the "light duty" springs.The "med duty" lift springs are super stiff.

Unless you live on dirt roads or with heavy snow, 1st Gen AWD RAV4's are NOT good daily drivers; in that case get the FWD. The AWDs are excellent for camping or a as light overlanding rig. No low range means forget rock crawling or large ruts, but these are wicked in sand, snowy roads, and on typical dirt or gravel roads, and arguably better than 4x4 on many surfaces (rally car baby!). 5spd AWD's have a full-time AWD system, while the automatic versions use an "on demand" system. Both have uses, but the 5spd is more fun and ultimately more capable, tho not as good for daily use. Both the stick and auto get just marginal fuel economy, so expect about 20 mpg avg and 25 tops. Forget driving much more than 65mph for long stretches, as these are geared for trails more than highways.
@JMunn553 жыл бұрын
why is the 5-spd not as good for daily use? Everything else sounds exaclty like what I need
@DonnieDarko13 жыл бұрын
That's odd that you'd say that, I did recent long road trip on mine, northeast to down south, she easily went over 65 (85-90) and if I needed to pass vehicle up ahead, the dedicated ECT button on the dashboard came in handy just for that extra kick.
@xxxYYZxxx3 жыл бұрын
@@DonnieDarko1 A 1st gen (edit, 4wd 5spd) RAV4 runs @ ~3200 RPM @ 70 mph, or ~3600 RPM @ 75mph. You can drive 90 MPH @ ~ 4700 RPM. That's not a highway vehicle or daily driver for highway driving. By comparison, my '07 Tacoma does about 2200 RPM @ 75 MPH.

@Don Rosengouldschmidsteinbaumbergman This video shows how the Toyota All-Trac systems work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJq9on6mrdasgJo I've cued the video to the portion showing how the automatic transmission AWD system works, via a viscous coupling device. The video is old, but the All Trac system in the RAV4 is the same from the Celica. You may want to watch the whole video, as it also show how the system works on a manual transmission too. Only the 1st gen 5spd RAV4s had the full time 4wd, while all manuals and subsequent generations use the viscous coupler.
@xxxYYZxxx3 жыл бұрын
@Don Rosengouldschmidsteinbaumbergman I like the 1st gen as a toy. To me, the later gens are too expensive to knock around in the dirt and they're not as good off road regardless. If the 1st gen 5spd 4wd RAV4 had a low range (like in my dreams), it would be pretty much as capable as a stock 2dr Jeep Wrangler.
