The second half of From Software's "Dark Souls" is a messy one but there is a lot I like about it. The Tomb of the Giants sticks out to me because of it's creepy atmosphere and foreboding monsters. Gravelord Nito may not be the most challenging boss but there is still a lot that I like about his boss fight.

Do you also enjoy the Tomb of the Giants or am I just crazy? I hope you enjoyed this video. The last half has a ton of stuff to cover so there are still plenty of Dark Souls videos to look forward to. Have a great day.

I wish this area connected to the Demon Ruins. It'd be an alternate path to the second Bell and not leave people at such a dead end--instead they could make their way through Quelaag and up through Blighttown to finally escape.

That actually sounds like such a cool mod idea. Allowing for you to go from pinwheel to Quelaag through the Tomb of The Giants is such a cool concept!

The darkness that cloaks the entire area is such a great mechanic that i wish was used more often in games, just this general sense of unease and feeling out of place in an extremely difficult environment is always such a treat, also the fact this is deaths domain embodies this area so well, death isnt some burning hell like the demon ruins, its just a cold, black, empty darkness, also nice video

Having to bumble your way around the dark until you get an item just makes the experience cumbersome. It is not a great mechanic whatsoever. It’s awful.

I love the Tomb of the Giants, it's such an atmospheric and memorable area! Going there very early to pick up the Covetous Silver Serpent Ring and making the way back is a journey that few other areas can give me.

Good video overall, good to have someone pointing out the unsung merits of the late game areas. Two corrections I wish to make though: 1. The Skull Lantern is a guaranteed drop for killing every necromancer in the Catacombs. It's a rare drop but you're guaranteed to get one for killing all of them. 2. Nito is the "central" skeleton in the ball. It's hard to make out in-game but concept art and character model view makes it very clear. He's a giant skeleton and he has a bunch of smaller ones kind of fused to his chest. This also makes sense because Nito, as an ancient being, was likely a giant. It's also consistent with the size of his coffin.

a highlight of my first playthrough was leaving the depths and saying ok its time to go kill that pinwheel guy who gave me so much trouble at level one i remember slogging through the catacombs and finally getting to pinwheel and feeling so powerful when i killed him easily only to travel into a dreadful black abyss with seemingly no escape so i just pushed forward in horror slowly fighting through the undead and exploring untell i hit the wall of light that stopped me from going to nito i felt so defeated but i back tracked and i felt so victorious when i saw the light again and then i immediately died to bone wheels I LOVE THE TOMB OF THE GIANTS /GEN

I also like the Tomb of the Giants because it feels like a primitive and ancient version of the Catacumbs. In both traversal and enemies. I love how dangerous it felt the first time I was there. Being really scared of advancing throught the darkness.

I also love tomb of the giants. As you said the pitch black darkness really adds to the tone of the area. I’ve beaten the game countless times and I always find some new item or weird ledge or something that I didn’t see because of how dark it is. I also like Seath’s archives and new Londo. In my opinion the only thing that really justifies people’s hatred for the back half of the game is lost izalith. The rest of the areas still feel fully realized and like they put the same amount of care into them in terms of the level design but lost izalith is genuinely bad. Also low tier god gravelord nito is hilarious lol. I think it’s a shame we never see nito come up again in the later games, we get pretty decent follow ups on the other lords from ds1 in ds3, except for seath but we already had a lot of info on him in 1, but nito never really gets brought up again except for a sort of reference with Wolnir but that’s about it. It’s a shame because getting an entire area dedicated to the witch of izalith and all that came from her downfall in 3 was really cool and it would’ve been neat to see nito get a similar treatment.

Words from the legend, Nito, himself! I agree with you that they should have brought up Nito again in 3. Seeing what might've happened to his miasma once he was gone could've been really interesting!

@@LavenderRex7705 thanks for showing off my crib and giving it some love. A lot of people trash it for its lack of lighting but skeletons don’t have eyes anyway and it saves me tons on my power bill. I am thinking of installing some safety railings tho my lawyer seath says some of the undead escaping the asylum can actually read so it’s only a matter of time before they evolve to a point where they understand law.

Tomb of the Giants is one of the most satisfying areas to rush through no hit. You really have to perfectly know the path and there are so many skips too. My favorite one is the potentially fatal death that you can save by dropping onto a coffin because that puts you into the sliding animation. Invasions are also very unique because of the many pitfalls and the darkness. Light sources are only visible in your own world so you can gain an advantage by using those without revealing yourself. It actually makes Cast Light viable if you want to use a better helmet than the maggot. I can see why it's a nightmare for beginners but it holds some personal value to me.

You really nailed why this is my favorite late game area besides new londo. And i hadn't noticed that bowl either, what a nice little touch. I honestly love how confusing and twisty the tomb is, I'm always finding some different items on weird ledges and corners, and how nito is just sleeping at the bottom of some pit, it makes me think how little he actually wants to participate in anything to do with the dreadful cycle gwyn started, he's just chilling, lol. Plus as you mentioned, the views we get to see are amazing, really helps give scale and interconnected world.

Nito is becoming one of my favorite characters in Dark Souls because of his covenant and also because there is basically nothing concrete about him. He's just a mute pile of bones.

@@LavenderRex7705 He is very enigmatic, I don’t think we really know anything about him beyond he helped kill the everlasting dragons, and that he had the rite of kindling which, pinwheel of all bosses was able to steal. Gravelording though is so unique and while I never really got to experience it (I play prepare to die edition on steam) I really wish they’d bring it back somehow. The idea of bringing black phantoms into a world that’s new game plus or higher is fascinating, and the fact it’s tied to world tendency from demon’s souls is such a fun bit of trivia.

I think Nito actually enjoys deaths, and expects us to understand that as well. Because even if you become his servant, you still take the long route to him, and his skeletons still attack you, despite clearly being able to calm down and carry you to Nito. It's like death is normal in his domain, not something to be angry about. You're just friendly beating each other up with skeletons, and you're also not getting disowned by Nito even if you defeat him, you still remain a gravelord servant.

I think the Tomb of the Giants is the most fully realized area of the last half( I'd probably say the same for New Londo). It's a shame that Lost Izalith got rushed out the door because of time constraints especially since Dark Souls has such a unique spin on demons.

its mostly the bloodborne and ds3 clown fanboys that only mindless reaction based game experiences that think these areas are unpolished. bed of chaos is about the only unpolished fight in the game, the rest is what i loved about old souls, you could never really predict a boss or what they do, but in bb and ds3, most bosses are basically dude with sword/flailing beast/kin.

@flamingmanure And you are fanboying ds1 just as much. Not only that but talking shyt about the other amazing games. I hope you are trolling and not serious. Seriously. Ds1 is an awesome game and my favorite, but is a fact that From itself is on record saying its unpolished. They had a massive time crunch and dev problems when it came to the last half. And it shows. It doesnt mean the game is bad. But to deny the last half is unpolished is being a ridiculous simping fanboy.
