Just a suggestion and from experience as a firefighter and a property owner . When you are planning on doing any controlled burns like your brush piles consider taking a tractor and running a disc around the brush piles to make a fire break . I have seen my share of grass land type fires and have seen the effectiveness of the tractor/disc combo in stopping them.

Camping and wildlife habitat...this hollers at me! LOL! The best thing is that you can combine the two. Simply make a camping spot inside of the wildlife habitat. Deer are curious little critters. If the area is where they want to be, they will still use the area, even if you are camping right in the middle of it. Just look at nearly any State Park campground. Good luck. Things are looking good.

Grandpa definitely liked concrete. Fruit trees? Yes. A few years may pass before they bear fruit but the long-term benefit is worth the effort. Some years ago I did some part-time work for a neighbor farmer. One field that I plowed was a full half-mile from the nearest road. All of the old farmstead buildings had been demolished years before except for a popcorn crib. BUT, a beautiful stand of perhaps three dozen pear trees also remained (again, far from any road). We pulled bushels of pears from that little grove each year. It's hard to beat plowing a half-section field with a big green machine underneath and a couple fresh pears in hand. Plant some fruit trees. The bees will be pleased as well. Great video.

When you go out to start fires next time take a cordless or gas powered leaf blower it works very well to put out grass fires, just blow the fire back on its self.

Or just clear the grass from around the pile first... not like they don't have equipment to handle that. That's just pure stupid on display.
@superchuck32592 жыл бұрын
@@JCrook1028 2 reasons why is it not dumb. #1 it takes too much time. #2 it costs money to till soil. He really should have not been doing it all by himself. It he had another person with him, it would have been fine. And the leaf blower idea would likely have helped be the extra help to prevent issue. Also the fire jumped the ditch. Also I have done this before and rabbits can get fire in their fur and run to other areas and start them on fire. What do you do then, kill all the rabbits before you start. In the end, it really was a harmless fire, it did no financial damage.
@JCrook10282 жыл бұрын
@@superchuck3259 It costs money to call the fire dep't out also and puts lives and property at risk. If you call filming instead of controlling the fire smart then yea, you're right. he was a genius. The part he was filming was ALREADY out of his control. That's the point. He thought it more important to film the out of control fire than to actually even try to control the fire. I've seen in other comments that Iowa has a statewide burn ban on for the last 6 months. Not sure if that is true or not. if it is then he's also facing a fine from violating that ban.

Another comment about a field fire. My husband and I owned a small farm in Maybee Mi. Needless to say we were burning some trash on a windy day next to a dry corn field of ours. I turned my back for a minute and the field was on fire. My husband was out beating down the fire. I went in to call the fire department. But they had a hard time finding the house. Which was really odd because the fire chief lived on one side of our house and the assistant fire chief lived on the other side. By the time the showed up we pretty much had the fire under control. Lesson learned.

If you are planning to have a wildlife/camping/natural area are you going to leave the "creek" adjacent to the grove open/untiled? A little grading and some gravel/broken concrete to line the creek will help to prevent erosion and provide water for a variety of critters that may visit/live within your grove. Might be something to think about over the next year while you decide what to do with the area.
