Today I lived a "romanticized" version of a 1950s housewife! This was a fun video to make albeit through rose tinted glasses of what it was actually like for women in the 1950s.
This depiction is not historically accurate for all women of that era as my grandmother would attest!
My grandmother raised 5 kids in a small village with no central heating, no indoor plumbing and no hot water. She washed everyone’s clothes by hand and had to pump the water as they didn’t have faucets like we do today. For bathing her kids, she would heat the water on a wood stove and bathe them in a round 3 ft diameter aluminum tub on the kitchen floor.
In the winter, the family would wake up to frost on the walls and had the unpleasant daily task of emptying their frozen chamber pots.
However, even through these hard times, they never lacked the essentials. They had what truly mattered. Love.
She expressed her love through baking and keeping a clean home. The sweet smell of fresh homemade bread and donuts would fill the air and brought comfort to everyone.
The remarkable thing is (yes, this is true) she did all this in lipstick and in a pair of heels!
So grab a cup of tea and enjoy the video! Thanks for watching!

I love this! I have always felt like I was born in the wrong era. You’ve inspired me to spend a day in a different one :) thank you

you were born in an era where you can choose to live like this ❤ it seems like the exact right era to me.

I feel like I was born in the wrong Era as well! Even if I could go back to even the 80s, before modern day technology would be fantastic. But I do fancy the 50s and 60s.

I like the idea of being a time traveler. Just take the best parts of time periods I most admire and incorporate them into my life.

Lots of things have changed. My mum had a thing about getting the curtains open early morning or "what would the neighbours think". No one cares about that now.

That's because neighbours no longer know each other or care about each other, when I was growing up in the 60s 70s we all knew each other in the street even the town in which we lived and we looked out for others

My Grandma🌟 had to cook a soup/meat/potatoe/vegetable-lunch for up to 7+ people , also breakfast, coffee-break and dinner. They had a farm and the meat came from their own cattle, the spuds and veggies from their own garden. She baked a big cake every saturday (for sunday). She made her own fruit-preserves and many others. 👉She didn't have time for make-up, hairdos and high heels👈. She was up and about all day long, bustling in the stables, in the fields and in the garden. She sewed, darned, looked after four children, later after many Grandchildren and the Elderly. Greatest respect, Grandma🙏🌟, you were a wonderful, powerful woman👍, a real heroine and I miss you terribly❗🥺🙏🌟

I agree--my grandmother had 13 children, in the twenties and thirties, so in the Great Depression. No electricity, no running water, kerosene refrigerator, gasoline washer. She also had no time for primping except for Sunday church. Even when I came along I can remember delicious fried chicken at her home, when she'd just killed one of her chickens and plucked it an hour earlier, magnificent fresh eggs. No, let's not get caught up in some silly nostalgia--humans have always been human, life is always complicated, only the circumstances change throughout history.

The ironing board we had in the 1950s was made from wood and weighed a ton! 4:09 - was that an LCD display? my dad only had one house rule - mum could NOT wear curlers in bed 😂

7:00am…well no my grandparents considered it “sleeping late” if they slept to 5:30am! My Nana always got up at 4:00am and now I carry the tradition.

They are a pain for washing your face. The single tap can be adjusted to a pleasant temperature. The doubles you have to fill the basin just to get a bearable temperature for your face.

Start with thrift stores! If you have an interest in history or a particular era, start doing some research on Pinterest and it will all come together, one piece at a time. Good luck and have fun with it!
