This reminded me to not buy a land near the community, so I don't have to worry about neighbor problems.

Remember folks… it’s better to rent than buy in Thailand. There are a few exceptions, but still better to rent than put up with neighbors that have different priorities.
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
I think it depends on personal circumstances, if you have a family buying is better imo.

Rural Thialand has really good roads ....
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Yeah, they are really good, always improving them and making new ones :)

Infrastructure in rural Thailand is not that bad. I am very impressed ❤
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Yeah, this is rural Chiang Mai so it may be a bit better than other rural areas in Thailand in terms of the roads etc :)

Good for Thai people. I would also have given up after having smoke issues within 8 days, or weeks, definitely not 8 years. Be glad you're out, I can only admire your patience.

Haha yeah, I lasted a while :)

Thanks for the tour! Very True about land being more expensive in many rural Thai places. I was always surprised by that too! I think you made a good choice going with the newer home in CM 😉 PS: I hope you will someday maybe show us more of your CM home & tell us how you bought it...how hard was getting a mortgage etc? I often think & wonder if better to just buy (Thai wife of course) or get a mortgage in wife's name for some of it etc etc

Thanks! Yeah that could be an idea for a video will have a think on how to make it :)

Nice one, Jon. Yes, community situated land is highly prized... traditionally minded people know this implicitly.

Thanks :) Yep, I learned the hard way how much land can be in places like this :)

Interesting how living styles and customs vary around the world and expats adapt and conform. My take-away from living abroad was to turn down the bed, open the windows, and exchange inside air for out. I hope I am not affecting the local air quality in the process as much as the land fires of Chaing Mai.
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Yep, things vary wildly from place to place but people still all want the same things :)

I am just wondering, if you grew a nice tall thick bushy hedge along the wall between you and the smokey neighbor, would this not have dampened the smoke coming through to a more acceptable level?
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Could have done, but I didn't really want to spend any money knowing I'd leave as soon as I could :)

@@JonInChiangMai thanks. What about the neighbors on the other side? What were they burning? Sorry, just thinking of buying in the countryside and would like to know what to be aware of.

Considering almost no or very very low property taxes the infrastructure is very good.

Love single houses. I am not fond of townhouses or condos.
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Yep, I'd always choose a single house if possible :)

Thanks for sharing. Was the price of 600k also 8y ago and included the land? So, normally local people would install aircon on the 2nd floor or what do they do with this space?
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Yeah including the land. Normally they would not put AC in, we did put in AC but the bill was way too high as the AC had to work on overtime to keep it cool.
@carstensanonym752715 күн бұрын
@@JonInChiangMai so without aircon on upper floor, will locals live/sleep there?,

So the new buyer doesn't mind the smoke issue ??
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
No, they are from the area and for them it's normal.

Location ,Location ,Location ,It would be hard to sell that to a Westerner although the yard is a nice size .Why land is expensive in Thailand compared to your example Scotland ? .The main reason is you can not build a house on most land plots in Scotland due to planning restrictions where as in Thailand you can put up a house anywhere .
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Yep true, I used to hate the idea of planning permission in the UK thinking people should be able to do what they want. But the reverse of that is you can't have a nice garden in Thailand as the land is too expensive because it could be built on.

congrats on selling the house! that's hard with the neighbours burning~ Do folks in rural thailand burn all year round?:o
@JonInChiangMai15 күн бұрын
Thanks, yep year round burning unfortunately.
