You made an excellent choice by taking that one-week course. I've sailed many thousands of miles on my own boats and made many deliveries, and I love it! Before you jump into buying a boat, I suggest that you crew on some boats to really get a feel for cruising and living aboard.

Anna. I am enjoying your search for a new challenge, and sailing catches my interest. I have never sailed and yet I have lived vicariously through just about every single handed sailing of the world, with fascination. It became a choice. Sailing...or my other passion which was flying. I chose the latter....built an airplane and flew it for 34 years. The adventures were just the most amazing. I guess most of us can't live every dream we have wanted to, but at least to dream, and to realize some of those dreams leads to the most amazing lifetime experiences. My hat is off to you. Continue to dream, and I wish you as much fun in following that dream as I have had in my airplane. Now, I have just finished converting a camper van and a new adventure at 83 begins. Ain't life good?!

An old man here. Just finished watching three of your vids. I'm not sure why you don't have more followers. More on that in a minute. First, you are about as well rounded as one can get. Two, most of that is because of your family and your intellect. (Rack of books on the back door is a give away). Third, sorry, you're downright charming (Ok and cute). Lastly, your logistically competent. Often underrated but crucial to our world. Now onto building your brand. Weather you know it or not, your a personality to be reckoned with. I'm only seeing positives here but your evolution has not kept pace. No judgment, just enthusiasm to see your channel grow. My recommendation, and I know nothing, is to network with other channels in your genre. For example, Dr. Hanna took the steps to buy a boat but was primarily a 4x4 trekker. Nate and Kara lived van life during Covid. ... And to shake things up, visit Thoraya Maronesy. Just saying, I like what I see and think with some networking you can go much larger. That would benefit us all thank you very much. Finally, its important to me that you understand from my eyes how lovely a human you are. Peace

Congratulations!! I knew you could do it! And I’m thrilled you fell in love. I loved it too. It’s not the type of love that drives the purchase of a boat, but any chance I get, I’m there even if only on a lake. A suggestion? Once you whittle your way down the over long list, try finding owners of that brand and model. They might let you tour and try their boat for a supervised sail. That could really help you out. Did you discover the channel GoneWithTheWynns yet? They shifted their travel bug to a sailing style too a few years ago. If you haven’t found them yet, you should. I’m glued every week. Congratulations again!! 💗

Hi again, After visiting Gaia (the 100 year old Swedish sailboat I worked on) I realized I forgot the key part of Tony's advise that makes it economical and doable in many places: join a sailing club. For me he suggested the Jericho Sailing Centre. So no purchase of a boat (etc, etc) needed to actually get a lot of practice in and as time allows. I'm sure there are many sailing clubs along the coast that you might join. When I was at the yard this past Friday Tony wasn't there, but I talked to Neil. At one point I asked Neil, "so Tony's a proper sailor right?" To which Neil said, "oh yeah". I mention this because it seems to confirm that Tony's ideas have some authority. Cheers

Hi Anna. I've really enjoyed watching a few of your videos. I've spent a lot of time on the water. I lived in Florida for a few years and then a tad over 30 years in SE Alaska. During all of that time, I always had some sort of boat including a 36' ketch that I bought in Everette WA, sailed up to Juneau and spent several years exploring SE Alaska. I was fortunate enough to have a job where I was able to take 4-8 week vacations every summer. I worked 4 days a week and we'd often take the boat out to an island cove for the weekend. My wife and I raised 2 daughters and all 4 of us would spend the entire summer onboard our sailboat. Some of it underway and some of it just sitting at the dock in Juneau. That was back before the GPS, LED Lights and Solar panels. Everything was done through Dead Reckoning using paper charts. Depth sounders were not digital. It was a round ring with depth numbers on it and a flashing light to tell you about how deep it might be. We loved it. Both of my daughters are now grown and have their own families. They both look back and often talk about the best times were when we were on the boat. I don't think they remember the storms, dragging anchor in the middle of the night, drunk commercial fishermen raising cane in the harbor, another boat in the harbor that caught fire one night, pulling the boat out, cleaning the bottom and painting it. Sanding and refinishing woodwork, polishing the topsides, repairing sails, replacing stuff all the time and the general maintenance that goes on and on...... I'm only saying this because lots of folks only see the glam and glitter part of sailing. Like anything else, there are certain aspects of it that are not necessarily all that fun. Was it worth it? Heck yeah! We loved the lifestyle, loved exploring and as you said "being rocked to sleep each night".

Do you want to go offshore? Try signing on as crew to get a feel for different sizes, designs, and ages of boats before investing in one. Read anything by John Vigor, but I highly recommend “The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat” and “Twenty Small Sailboats to Take You Anywhere.” You’ve had good training maintaining your van, but maintaining sailboats is on a whole another level. Fair winds and following seas Anna.

I went about it backwards. I wanted to learn how to sail, so I built a small trimaran big enough for coastal camping. It's was also small enough to be singlehanded and trailerable. After a couple of thousand miles of that, I made the very unrecommendable decision to make a 1600 mile round trip from the North Carolina coat to Bermuda and back in a boat with no cabin. That little boat helped me learn enough about sailing and also gave me a better idea of what I want in a bluewater boat which I am working on now. I'm a bit biased towards multihulls. Shallower draft, you don't have to spend the day standing at a 20 degree angle, and they're faster than a comparable length monohull. The one I'm building folds to fit on a trailer (without a crane) and can be towed by a 3/4 ton truck or van but has the capability to make it to New Zealand and back.

AWESOME ANNA, congrats on passing your certs! The suggestions on crewing from Tomás', bad weather sailing from Ilberc, and tripling your planned budget from Ronnie, are all excellent. I'm sure there are many more good ones below, including someone already suggesting what I'm about to: take an extensive marine maintenance class - engines, sails, the works. Unfortunately "Murphy" is a sailor too, and stuff breaks! But you'll be prepared and we'll all get to enjoy your future Anna Uncharted videos on the water. Love and luck to you!

I cruised on a sailboat for ten years on the other coast and have owned boats from 15' - 45' all of which I single-handed. I've owned a Catalina 22 which is way too small for what you want but a Catalina 30 might work. My Hunter 38 was a good boat, too but what you get with "production" boats like Catalina/Hunter/Jenneau/etc. is light-weight construction. Any boat is a project boat; you will always have something to fix. Always. But, yeah, it was an amazing time so go for it.

Good for you. I think it was very wise to take the kind of course you did: actually live on and be on the water training, learning, experiencing for a longer period of time. I've never been on a sailboat under sail, however this past year I worked on a 100 year old Swedish sailboat in Richmond, B.C. Despite my preference for old diesel boats (I commercial fished long ago), I got to know a lot of the sailors in the yard most of whom advised I at least try sailing. I thought the best advise for learning to sail came from Tony. He said: sail a simple boat (like a laser) and do it a lot because it all scales up and you get a quick and more tactile or immediate feel for the conditions and what you need to do to sail in them. He emphasized you feel everything much more clearly, so your knowledge is more intuitive. And it's cheap, easy to do when time allows, and what you can practice in a given time and space is greater than what you can with a full sail boat. For what it's worth I'm passing Tony's advise on. Cheers from, Dawson in Vancouver, BC

First let me start out by saying CONGRATULATIONS on passing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Take your time don't rush save up triple what it will cost to buy it because parts and labor are more expensive and you want a cushion just in case. You have all the time in the world meanwhile you can always take more classes to keep your skills sharp. I don't know anything about sailboats but I know basic boat knowledge, land and nautical maps from my time in the Marines. However did live on my uncles Chris-Craft 320 Express Cruiser for a year I was watching it for him when I was 18. I did like it a lot being on the boat and in a converted truck was the best of both worlds especially back then it was amazing and well worth it. In the future I can see you being in your van and on a boat also. Good luck 👍🏻

You may consider a catamaran as they are more efficient in the water so that on days with light winds you will still be able to make good time. The wider beam makes cats more stable on the water. The narrow hull sections slice through small chop and there is less boat rise which give a smoother ride.

You are one step ahead of me. I've been eying sailboats on Marketplace and wondering what it takes to learn to sail. Currently I live in my 12ft camper that I pull with an SUV. In the summer I rent a spot with an electric cord and bathroom privileges so I can work in the shop I own near the beach in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In the winter I travel with my trailer, which is why I subscribed to your Vlog. I have been thinking that sailboat living might be even better ever since I started living the Van Life (2 yrs ago) and switched to Camper Life (one year ago). Since my shop is in a beach town and I love surfing and the ocean I thought a sail boat would be the perfect way place to live. I read an article that was about how people in areas with high rent like mine are saving $ by living aboard boats and renting a slip in a marina for way less than rent. Many marinas include free Wifi and bathrooms with showers and are still much cheaper than studio apartments or even a campsite. I followed my friend on facebook who just motored a boat from Maryland to Key West with her new husband. She posted daily pics and updates. My business is seasonal so I would sail south for the winter to Florida or even the caribbean. Puerto Rico has great surf and all the comforts of the US, but it would be great to explore all the islands. Van life can be lonely but I'll bet sailing is even worse some times. Hopefully we will both be able to make our dream of living on a sailboat a reality.

Love that you are interested in sailing and congrats on doing so well in your sailing courses. I particularly liked the feeling that you were trying to express waking up that morning, unless you have lived on boats and experienced those mornings it's hard to describe. It is really important to perhaps live aboard a vessel for a while or even go travelling with someone else on their boat, experiencing day to day life and some open ocean sailing where the conditions can be a lot more varied (tagging along on an international delivery or even just looking out for people who are looking for company while they go on 3-6-week trips are good options). It's also important to go into buying a boat with the expectation that sailing is basically fixing things constantly in beautiful locations and you should allocate at least 10% of the boats value to upkeep every year with older vessels. It might not always cost that much but it's an important thing to consider. If you're really ready to start searching for a vessel though, you should look at BVI (British Virgin Islands) as there are a lot of really affordable and well fitted out boats constantly coming up for sale there that are often fitted out for ocean cruising, saving you a lot on modifications before you will be able to sail internationally (if that's a long-term goal). You mentioned shorter boats which are good for coastal cruising but are a lot more uncomfortable in open oceans compared to 40-44ft boats which are the ideal size for solo travelling, before buying a boat really think if you only want to sail it around the USA or going abroad is something that you could envision, as buying and selling boats can take 6-12 months if you really want to find specific things. Hunter is a good live aboard for coastal cruising which can handle most conditions and have ample storage, if you prefer more ocean-going vessels Jeanneau, Beneteau, Catalina and Bavaria are my personal favorites, they also make coastal cruisers, but quality comes at cost also.

I don’t think a week anywhere, counts as living there. More like a trip, or taking a cruise. That being said, it’s so refreshing watching a real van-lifer, because when you were gone, I got caught up in the scamming with Ari, fake, car-life youtube channel. You are by far much better looking, much nicer, and much more authentic. Glad you have returned safe.

YOU WILL GET THE MUCH NEEDED ECPERIENCE YOU NEED, GET A BETTER FEEL FOR THE BOAT YOU WANT AND GET TONS OF TUTORING FROM EXPERIENCED SAILORS. THEY ARE GREAT PEOPLE AND WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU ALONG. TRUTH. MOST NEWBYS WHO RUSH INTO BUYING A BOAT HAVE DISASTEROUS EXPERIENCES AND NEVER RETURN TO THE SEA. YOU ARE YOUNG. TAKE YOUR TIME AND LEARN FROM OTHERS. Really enjoyed watching. I came to this as I just finished 10 days on Misty Blue Yonder last week. Fun to see you on the same boat. We are in a different place in life. I am married with kids and a career that can only be done in person, but am looking forward to having a boat I can take out in these areas as well. What I have for now doesn't meet your criteria, but I am on a Ranger 20. I can tow it behind my vehicle and have done some overnight trips. Mostly, I do day sails on local lakes. I did take it to Anacortes and sailed it up to Succia Island. That works for me, then I charter a boat, such as Misty Blue, a few weeks a year. That allows me to travel to different locations. The San Juans the most, but also La Paz, MX, Catalina, BVI, and upcoming in 2023 to Newport, RI. What I am looking at in the next few years is something like a Jeanneua 349. We are a family of 5, so it would work for us. You can find a lot of sailboats at very good prices. What I would say with your budget is not so much to decide on a specific one, rather watch for what becomes available in your price range. It will be a used boat, and the condition of the boat will be more important than the manufacturer. Again, mine is not what you are looking for, but I picked up my Ranger 20 with trailer, outboard, and sails for $3500.

Anna. You mentioned Puget Sound. The Vancouver/Victoria/Seattle triangle has more boats per capita than anywhere in the world. That is because it is one of the finest sailing locales in the world. You don't need to go offshore, at least, not at first. Crew as much as you can. Your first boat? Start small and basic. Catamarans are ideal for the tropics. Monohulls are ideal for high latitudes (including Puget Sound) and rough seas. Also be aware of sea sickness, mold and the need for CONSTANT repairs. Boat brokers in the Seattle area? I have always been impressed with Robert Wright (Wright Yachts). He can be a wonderful source of information.

Sweet week ! Of course you'll love sailing, it's very similar to RV living, just a lot better. I did the same as you a while ago, because I felt like sailing around the world. The thing is, you can see the entire world, for very cheap, since you are sail powered, and can anchor off mostly anywhere you want for free. I have sailed quite a bit since then, but haven't bought my own boat yet, I am sticking to an RV for now, because I decided that if I were to live aboard, it would be on a catamaran and financially I can't afford it quite yet),. Also because a boat is a whole other affair to manage than an RV. There is always stuff to fix, clean, maintain, but also, there are realities day to day that will make some moments quite stressful doing it alone. And sticking to a budget is much more complicated. Many people do it alone, I just for now, prefer not to. So the boat you buy will largely depend on what you want to do, if you stay near an area most of the time, sort of living on a sailboat at a marina, or if you will take the boat and go wherever the wind, your wind blows. Because then you want to look into autonomy, redundancy, and have to take into account weather patterns and seasons. If it's to live around the Puget area, a monohull to start with is perfect. It'll be your first boat, not your last. Check out some vloggers, like the O'Kelly's, Sailing Zatara, Gone with the Wynns, La Vagabonde (super successful vloggers!). Happy to connect and support you more if you'd like.

Congrats. Hopefully smooth sailing is in your future. Before buying and living on water, you should try a few days of bad weather though. Port fees can cost and when you are in a 30 foot with 6 foot swells, it can be not so fun. It is rough with several people and I am not sure I could have done it alone. I am not trying dissuade. Just like vanlife there are many comfortable times. People try to give the best version of it. I hope for you nothing but happiness.

Now that you have a certificate to bare boat rent a multiple smaller boats and figure out the trade-offs. Boats trade-offs are much like all the van trade-offs. Also, Most of the boats in the size you mentioned are used and set up for day and weekend cruising. My guess is you plan to live aboard. Do you plan/hope to do a lot of blue water sailing outside of Puget Sound? Look into doing boat transport. Plenty of people sail down to Cabo, but then have others sail the boat back up the coast. Lots of good experience to gain and you will know what kind of sailing is for you (Inter coastal sailing or blue water sailing). Good Luck!

I loved this for you! Your serenity and joy was so apparent. Congratulations on passing all of your exams! You should look at the sailboats for sale in the U.P. (I think that’s near your mom). I’m in Marquette and I’ve seen A LOT of smallish/mid sized for sale with low price tags (like 12-18k).

If you're looking at the 28 foot range, check out the O'day 28. I'm not sure if they have many of them out on the coast. I grew up sailing on my Dad's on the great lakes. They're very nice boats, and sail well above their weight class.

I think you ‘ll need the experience of dealing with Rough weather out there. Did you hit any rough seas at all during your week? Oh, the “cliche/ reality” of owning a boat is like having a hole in the water surrounded by wood (or other material 😃) that you pour money into. But life is an adventure aye? Good luck following your dreams. Don’t forget the old adage Anna. “Where ever you go, there you are.” 🙏

I’m so impressed you did this. I also fell in love with sailing in Seattle, but haven’t taken the steps you have. Great job. I can’t believe you said it was a clunky Catalina!! I love those boats. Their made in FL! Maybe you should take a trip and visit the factory! Another great video! Thanks for sharing.

First congratulations on passing all the exams, which I knew you would. Secondly good on you for stepping out and giving something new a try, I would say go on many sailing boats to really know that this is the path, a lot of money down the drain if it turns out you don’t love it to live it. All the best, be great following your decision. Cheers Judy Australia

Congratulations! And yes, this is of my most favorite video that you’ve made. (Even realized the music matched the video perfectly while watching for the third time) I’m extra glad that you found boating to be to your liking. Full disclosure, I’ve owned boats for over 40 years but very rarely have I been on a sailboat. All my boats have been motorboats and I am hoping your instructor and fellow ship mates did not talk too bad about us motor boaters. If you are considering living aboard full time I would like to suggest you at least consider a trawler. A trawler would be much more comfortable to live on and would probably be easier to learn the boating skills you want to develop. My opinion, a trawler would be a better match for you if most of your trips are going to be fairly short. Like maybe a hundred miles or so and just a week or two long. (A trawler would probably be easier to sell when you are ready to move up to your ocean crossing, world traveling sailboat.)

Deer Harbor is beautiful. I grew up around boats. Power boats. Only sailed once. But spent a lot of time on the water. ❤ I understand your excitement but I've been caught in a few storms and it will make you think twice once you've experienced it. Puget sound can get really rough.

I grew up on and off boats (ski boats and sleep aboard larger boats) and I completely understand that feeling you are talking about. Waking up on the water is magical, beyond words. I've always dreamed of living on a catamaran and sailing around the world (I've been on a sailboat 3 times, and while I didn't get sick on those boats, I have managed to get sick on many a ferry and cruise boat around the world 🙃). For inspiration, I watch the channel Gone With The Wynns. They used to travel in an rv for 5 years, then they've been on a catamaran sailing around the world for another 5 or so (and they had ZERO experience either, they actually bought a boat and then took their sailing classes and tests.) They recently sold their first boat and are waiting for their new boat to be built. But you might enjoy their adventures - Gone With The Wynns. If you have a dream and a passion, why not go for it? My boyfriend and I are planning for vanlife in a few years and I can hardly wait.

I like cruising on the big ships I can't imagine what it would be like in a small boat like that to travel around the world. If you want to do it and you can go for it! It will be a lot more tales to tell your kids and grand kids one day!

Anna, we are on the exact same journey! My husband and I plan on buying our first boat next year and hope to someday sail around the world. Like you, I need to "do" in order to learn and understand, so I'm looking at taking my first classes next spring just before we purchase. Since I live in Seattle, I am curious what school you used up at Friday Harbor. Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi Anna! Congratulations. I live comfortably aboard my Hunter 37 each winter in Mexico. You could probably do a 32 or 35 footer easily, but you'll need to be very very picky. I'd advise not going smaller, although there are a few very special 24-25s out there. Do your research. I'd befriend a salty old somebody, and maybe your ASA instructor could help you find someone, for a mentor to find a suitable boat. In the ads all boats sound perfect, but you'll almost certainly need to visit many boats in-person to find the right one. The newer the better, and the state of maintenance on everything is crucial. Best of luck. Take your time.

You should definitely try to crew on some boats. People often look for safe and sane crew for their longer passages either up or down the west coast, Mexico or Hawaii. You will learn a lot on such voyages. Since you like to read seek out Tania Aebi's "Maiden Voyage." It might be out of print but worth finding. For solo blue water sailing, I'd look for a Crealock but they are pricy. Good luck and thanks for the videos!
