Amazing how calm the emus are, especially Bamboo, around things that you'd think would be scary, like the mower. Their response to new things isn't "Will that hurt me" but "Can I eat this?" Obvious that they have been raised with kindness and lots of close contact, as we have seen in your videos.

We have a couple packs of coyotes here that carry on like that for hours sometimes. Annoying for sure. They like to snack on cats. Had to help the neighbor pick up pieces of her cat out of our field. Not fun. They took that cat right off the back porch and have been know to snag cats off a 5 foot post. We havent lost any chickens to them yet though.

Actually, I've read somewhere that that's normal. Unlike humans, emus naturally wake ip every so often during their sleep, check their surroundings real quick amd fall back asleep. Which, well, makes sense when being a huge, hard to miss bird on a big flat terrain.

Jake, I remember how some people warned you about Bamboo and what the Emu would do to you and I haven't seen anything horrible. I think you and your family have tamed them pretty well and they will always be curious and props go out to you and the family for being so good to them. You did a great job and stood the challenge! The coyotes sounded close by and maybe that's why the Emus were stirring. Just a thought I had was that they wanted to make sure they were close to you to protect you as well. Take care, hugs and smoochies to the family, loved watching this vid. It just proved to me that it can work with an Emu(s) on the farm. Anna Banana - Hugs and smoochies to everyone. Good job!!!

Emus really enjoyed how much you enriched their lives! I don't think the three ball toys were a bust at all! It's maybe not what you expected, but the birds could interact with them, regardless. 💓Maybe the reason they go back and forth on the fence is because they miss you. We put our cats in a shelter at night. The coyotes would eat them for sure! I love your Emus! When will your hens start laying eggs? How old are they now? I looked up about that, but it didn't say how old in months. I found it fascinating that the Male Emu, Bamboo, will sit on the eggs and take care of the chicks! I didn't know that the females will fight over the Male either! Socialize even more with Bamboo so maybe he won't be defensive about his eggs or chicks! I can hardly wait! Emus, and as I found out yesterday, ostriches also HATE me. I understand how that sounds. If anyone told me a species of animal hates them I would think they a bit weird or at best, maybe the animal smells fear or something like that. I came to live in Australia as a teen. The first emu I saw was in a fauna park, I wasn't afraid, they were behind a large fence... one came up and threw up on me. The 2nd time I met an emu it was in a goddamned children's petting zoo for christ's sake. I assumed that animals in petting zoo would not harm a flea but it chased me and I ran for the car, dived over the front seat to get into the back seat and it was there it attacked me leaving some impressive bruises. The 3rd time I was squatting in the middle of a national park to pee. It was still and staring directly at me so I pulled up my jeans slowly then ran as fast I could towards an on-site office. I was ecstatic that I outran an emu... right up until it decided to come in... even more impressive bruising. The 4th time was years later with my own children at a zoo, I was talking and facing someone to the left of me, completely unaware that I was passing an emu enclosure and only turned my head to the right because I heard growling. Walking closer and further a few times and each time I walked closer, it would growl... proving to those near me who did not get the same response that I wasn't making it up. Years and one successful ordinary encounter with an emu later, yesterday I took my grandkids on a offroad safari trip in an open plains zoo. We were coming up to a group of female ostriches. I asked my daughter, I've never been close to one, do you think they would react like emus? I had a baby in my lap and nowhere to go so decided the best thing to do is just turn myself away, stay quiet and ignore them.... My daughter never did reply verbally but what I didn't notice at the time, she had decided to record whatever happens next. So apparently 'yes', to the great amusement of my daughter and two older grandkids who were in fits of laughter, ostriches also hate me, bruised again but now I have video evidence.... the ranger decided not to get close to the group of male ostriches further along.

Emus probably are naturally drawn to open areas to keep an eye out for predators. If you think about it, they don't live in dens or caves in the wild. They might go in for shelter when winter starts hitting though. That is my guess.

Elfie In Angel City maybe because they are not used to the American winter since it is a lot colder in America but in Australia it’s a lot hotter in winter

In Australia it would be 5 degrees Celsius while in America it would be -30 degrees Celsius

Maybe try tieing an apple or some other treat ball for the emus to the end of the tetherball rope instead of the ball?

You should get a puppy or two puppies that are some bigger breed so that you have additional protection from coyotes

*Please use caution with the tetherball and only under supervision for the birds - don't want that rope to accidentally wrap around the emus' necks. I love it when Bamboo does his karate kicks! I think the emus are so AWESOME!

Tetherball is best for sheep, especially rams. In the UK they gave one to Rambro (that's the ram's name). He loved it. Kept butting it with his head.
