I did some experiments with a blast sensor. The snap is faster. My time to contact was .13 to .14 seconds vs and average of .16 seconds. That’s huge. Your biggest problem is that you are demonstrating the snap in isolation. When you properly coil the back hip and get the hips moving there is no more efficient way to transfer hand speed generated by hip rotation (actually at its peak at the start of the swing and in a normal swing declines into contact). Great stuff
@SwingKinetix Жыл бұрын
You're right about the coil, But good hitters do not swing before the foot lands. The rear leg coil starts the swing and the front leg finishes the swing. Swing starts between the time the front foot touches and the weight commits to the front foot.

The foot always lands before the swing, yes. The difference is that some people shift the weight into the front foot and then swing and other people make the swing the reason why weight goes into the front foot.

Once you learn how he exaggerates to make points (although with many of them he seems to think he isn't exaggerating) then you can actually start to learn from him. MANY great hitters begin their swing at full foot plant. He says that's not possible. A change-up alone forces that even when you try to swing before touching down. But as a cue he tells Judge "start the swing before foot strike". Great. And I bet it felt like that, and that exaggerated feel probably mostly resulted in swings being earlier then he had been, but I bet he was initiating his swing at toe strike, and the time to full full foot plant is so fast that it took until then for all systems to go. Meanwhile, since teacherman also refuses to say open hips were the results of "hips opening" or hips that are now facing the pitcher have "rotated", and he doesn't provide acceptable new terms to replace "open" and "rotate" to describe what he means, his following will remain small, and his comments sections full of naysayers. Thankfully I think I've finally decoded his "speak". So now I'm finally learning from him. For the naysayers, consider his good terms like "launch quickness" and NOTE that his wrist hinge/barrel turn thing isn't a solo, or first, act no matter what he says. It goes with "all" other parts of the swing, and the result is bat whip and "quick" short swing to the ball

100% Correct. The way he explains snap is wrong (and dangerous). And his front foot ideas are wrong. BUT what he teaches can work, because if done, it will cause massive back leg rotational power with coil and the swing path will be correct. It's a classic case of old school teaching that can actually work even though he doesn't explain it accurately.

@historyrepeated42398 ай бұрын
This is a fair point. That being said, I’d say his instruction could be simplified by simply teaching hitters to not overly shift weight to their front first. The rest of his instruction doesn’t make sense, mechanically. For example: 1) The snap (rotation about forearm is weak motion and makes it far more challenging for the top hand to pronate….which all the greats do. Bat quickness is an admirable thing to chase, but doing a motion that nobody uses at the MLB level to get there, proves that this technique is problematic. 2) A rear legged launch (or stating you should be only on the rear leg at impact is not practiced by any consistent hitter. Bonds, Judge, Pujolz, etc. all have their weight centered through the ball at impact. Meaning, it is not a rear legged launch…but some balance of weight between the rear and front leg and pitch location. Very hard to rear legged launch and hit a knee high pitch that is moving away. His instruction offers far less flexibility in this regard….and opens the door to less contact and K’s.
@jockoadams3377 Жыл бұрын
The other glaring issue is that the way the techniques are demonstrated... there's always way too much head movement as a symptom. How can you properly track a ball and make good solid contact on a moving pitch with a moving head? Better eyes on the ball are more fundamental to good hitting than any extra bit of power/quickness you think you might generate from a series of jerky moves.

You are finding this a challenge because it is all wrong. It might work sometimes for little kids with tiny 20oz bats, but it would never work for a high school player or adult with a woody or a BBCOR bat. It might be a quicker way to whip the bat around, but it is absolutely improper swing mechanics and is not at all the correct way to swing the bat for power or consistency.
@mn22286 Жыл бұрын
@@matthewswanson5623 to say this video teaches improper mechanics implies there are proper mechanics that should be taught instead. Can you share what those proper mechanics are, how you know they are the proper mechanics, and why this video teaches mechanics that don't meet that standard? The broad statement that these mechanics won't work with full sized metal or wood bats seems to be tenuous given the amount of college and pro players who have said rich's teachings helped them.
@matthewswanson5623 Жыл бұрын
@@mn22286 Why should I give away for free what I have spent a lot of time and money to figure out? Actually in my opinion it is not that complicated and didn't take me very long to figure out. Here are the basics: 1. Establish a balanced athletic base 2. Start with your back leg 3. Transfer that energy up through your hips and torso 4. This will begin to rotate your shoulders, as that happens you time the throwing of your hands to work in conjunction with the rotation of your shoulders. It is all about starting with the right stance, the right body part, and then proper order, movement, and timing. Your swing should be as balanced, smooth and fluid as possible, (like KGJr’s not Barry Bonds) with minimal to no vertical movement, and moderate forward lateral movement. Again the power starts with your back leg, translates up to rotational force (torque) in your torso, which then drives your shoulders, and you then just need to time the throwing of your hands to work in conjunction with your shoulders rotation. Last but not least, your head should be pointed where the ball goes and stay as still as possible until after contact. There is way more to it than that, but that is the basics. It is all based on common sense, simple physics, and the most basic fundamentals of human body mechanics.
