Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
In this week’s episode we cover:
1. I love the look of tubular cast on, but every time I try to do it, my stitches keep twisting. Any advice how to ensure not to twist my stitches when starting to work in round?
2. When slipping stitches does it really matter if you slip them knitwise or purlwise?
3. Dear Andrea, my question today is about tensionning when working on cables. I love all your designs and have been having lots of fun with colors, mosaic and brioche knitting but I am now launching into a couple projects with cables - Honey Moss and Winter Beach Cardi. Specifically my question is how much to tension the yarn when knitting the stitches on the cabling needle? Do I try to get it tight or will a little looser be ok as well? on the bigger cables I feel like I am squishing everything together! Thank you for all the inspiration and beautiful patterns you bring us.
www.moderndailyknitting.com/2...
4. I love your designs and really enjoy knitting them. Your directions are easy to follow. My question may sound stupid but when designers talk about yardage used for a project, especially a small piece, how do you determine the yardage? I can picture myself measuring the yarn before I start knitting and marking off a yard at a time! I know there must be an easier way but it just escapes me. I'm used to dealing with ounces and grams! Thanks for your help!
Divide the length (yards or meters) by the weight (grams).
Weigh your finished knit.
Multiply that weight by the g/yd - you know have your total yardage used!
For example: I am using a fingering weight yarn that is 100 g/400 yds per skein. 400 divided by 100 = 4 yds per 1 gram. My finished hat weighs 80 grams. I can multiply that weight by my yards per gram to see how many yards I (approximately) used to make the hat - 80 x 4 = 320 yds :)
5. I’d like to get your thoughts on which needles to purchase for sock knitting. I love to knit and am just about to start sock knitting for the first time. I need to purchase some needles but don’t know whether to go for DPNs or fixed circulars and what needle material to buy. Decisions, decisions! What is the easiest method for a beginner to sock knitting? My needle set for standard knitting is the Lykke Umber set and I love them. I’m a slightly looser/relaxed English style knitter. Thanks!

Ahhh my heart ❤️ Andrea, you are human sunshine wrapped in fibery-goodness! Love your episodes and joy of your designs. The day before this episode came out, I was digging deep into some old stash and found some gorgeous skeins of Peace Fleece worsted from 2014. I sat on Ravelry filtering through projects that would work for the amount I have and nothing was really tickling my fancy. And THEN BOOM the next day this video pops up and i see your Moonwake Cowl and was like “YES! That is exactly what my Peace Fleece wants to be!” Can’t wait to download it and make one. Also, as a not new knitter I am sheepishly admitting that I had read that about slipping stitches pwise a very long time ago and forgot! Eek. Thanks so much for everything you do and for bringing so much joy into the world.

Thank you so much for making these videos. It’s definitely something I look forward to every week. I love that you mentioned weaving, as a knitter and spinner for many years, I haven’t had much experience with weaving. However, I have had a small Ashford sampleit loom, sitting in my closet for several years and I promised my self that I would learn how to use it this summer. This morning I warped it and began weaving. The wrapping took most of the morning and afternoon, but I am thrilled to be working on it. Yay to weaving!

Thank you for this great episode. I have just cast on the Weekender Light sweater and struggled with the tubular cast on until I discovered there is another way to do this cast on. You can do a provisional crochet cast on with one half the stitches you need (or plus one if you need an odd number of cast on). Then work in knit one slip one pattern to start the tube as shown in the pattern. I did two complete rounds of this then transitioned to the rib pattern. There are several videos of this technique on You Tube. But I would love to hear ANDREA’s thought on this and would love an ANDREA tutorial on this technique. It really resolved the issue of all those twisted stitches for me and got me on my way with my sweater.

Your enthusiasm for sewing your own sweatshirt is the same as me knitting my first top down sweater 😉 I love it and am so stoked for fall! Yes, us New Englanders were in the grip of a heatwave, along with so many others. The drop in temperature has been so delightful! I am so anxious for Rhinebeck ❤️ I was taught to cast on with the long tail or the basic one. When I started the Stonecrop, I can’t tell you how many times I frogged it… seriously it must have been at least 5 times 🤦🏼‍♀️ I also started out learning English style and have been knitting since I was 8 (and am 47 now), but like others have been trying to teach myself continental. I love the ease of purling! My problem is my gauge! English is tighter and continental is loose. I have to remind myself which style I am knitting a project. Does anyone else have issues with gauge when switching between the two? Looking forward to seeing all my fellow knitters that are able to join us at Rhinebeck! Yay! Xoxo

I have a Velcro dot on my Lendrum wheel and find it very helpful. Another option is clipping a small clothespin onto the loose end of your fiber to hold it and keep it from slipping back through the orifice. Craft stores often have small decorative clothespins in late fall for clipping holiday cards onto twine or ribbon for display.

thx for the tip abt how not to twist the sts in a tubular CO--i learned this CO from your video, but i gave away all my straight needles years ago. but my old Denise interchangeables have thicker cables than my other interch needles, and that was enough to help keep the sts organized. also, MDK has a post where Patty recommends adding a thin, non-grabby [maybe cotton?] lifeline to the CO--i haven't tried it, but it looks like another good solution. thx for another informative and fun friday morning!

When I started sock knitting I was barely a knitter. I tried everything and was extremely frustrated until my last shot was with 9 inch circular needles. Perfect! For me it takes away the confusion of multiple needles. I’ve since switched to magic loop because I started knitting tiny socks for my kids that wouldn’t work with 9 inch circulars. Magic loop takes practice but it’s worth it to be able to knit almost any size circumference project. Good luck! Sock knitting is so fun!!! 🧶🧦🧶🧦🧶

Andrea as a beekeeper's wife here's a tip. I am allergic too so hubby taught me how to deal with those pesky wasps. Take a pair of long bladed scissors and put it around the wasp and cut it in half separating the head from the body. Now you might feel but I don't want to do that... Just think if I leave it alive it's going to find an area to hibernate so that in the spring it will make another wasp nest.

I switched from wooden sock needles to metal (I'm a loose knitter as well) because I'm a doofus and sat on my wooden sock needles and they broke! So My advice is to just not do what I did and put your knitting on a table or something when you get up to get a cup of tea instead of leaving it on the couch! Sock needle sizes can be real tiny, I've never had an issue with my other wooden needles. This might not ever happen to you but just in case I wanted to mention it. It's a huge bummer to have to fully stop your project and buy a new set! Have fun with socks!! :)

Just a quick comment about Tubular Cast On tips. There are 2 options to help with the twisting. #1 is my favorite and totally makes Tubular CO a breeze. 1) Cast on 1/2 the number of stitches +1 on waste yarn using long tail CO.. (I believe there are videos on this) You start by knitting flat (not in the round) and you always knit the first and last stitches. .Row `1 of the set-up rows you knit the first stitch and then K1, YO to the end and knit the last stitch. On Rows 2-4 you still knit the first and last stitches, and then you knit the knit stitches and slip the purl stitches with the yarn in front. Join in the round after this (you will need to decrease somewhere to get rid of the extra (+1) stitch. At the end of the project just sew up the set-up rows that were knit flat 2) I believe Modern Daily Knitting showed this recently, but they suggested putting a stitch marker every 10 stitches or so which helps keep the stitches from twisting around the cable and helps identify how the stitches should be oriented on the needle. Hope this helps!

When casting on for in the round I knit the first row flat that way the stitches lay better. This makes it easier to spot if its twisted. I also like the look of a knitted first row even if it starts with a ribbed section, it's easy to close the gap afterwards. You can even knit the whole of the ribbed section flat if you're really worried about it, it does mean the seam may be visible at the end but would solve the worry!!!

I’m so glad that ravelry exists- when I “came back” to knitting about 5 years ago, it never occurred to me that there would be such a vibrant resource to discover new yarns, and new patterns. This amazing design community (with you as a prime example) just feels right-and I love knowing that my knitting feeds back into supporting the whole ecosystem of designers and dyers etc. Now I am thinking of getting back to sewing. I see scattered indie pattern designers, but haven’t discovered a similar resource of a “ravelry-for-sewing”. Does this exist? It is frustrating and time consuming to try to find indie pattern designers and find /compare patterns across the web. Do you have any recommendations?

I'm so curious about the continental knitters who love the shorties. I am a continental knitter and I want to love the shorties - they seem so straightforward with no fuss. Just knit around and around. Unfortunately, my hands get so cramped when I knit with shorties. Now, I have to admit, I have really big hands for a woman. Are there continental knitters out there with big hands who like the shorties?

Please pick my question!!! Love your videos and your patterns !! I am knitting your Birch pullover for my granddaughter but she has requested stripes!!! Please help me know how to do clean stripes (which I would normally do a knit row for) and jogless stripes with the BOR in the front I just can’t make it look right!! HELP!!!!

I did stripes in the Stria Cardigan and Stria Hat that are both also half-fishermen's rib (like Birch), and I didn't do anything special! I really like single round/row stripes in this stitch pattern. As for the jog, the only method I use is this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4isc6qifJyJfcU, but I didn't find it necessary when doing half-fishermen's rib.

I know it's not from your side but in 40 minutes there was 6 ads. Sorry that you tube has increased their ads but it sure does cut into what your saying. Just complaining I guess. Thanks for all your tips on knitting.

I was wondering about all the ads. Seemed like more than usual.

Yes, an ad every few minutes and so much louder than the video. Not Andrea’s fault but really cuts into her podcast.

Patty Lyons just posted a tip on Modern Daily Knitting about using scrap yarn to keep your tubular cast on from twisting. Here’s the link. www.moderndailyknitting.com/2022/07/13/ask-patty-totally-twistless-tubular/
