In 1975, I heard Jorma Kaukonen's Solo Acoustic Album Quah. I was blown away. It is far and away the most influential album of my life. It made me want to pick up the guitar which I did in the summer of 1976 and have continued a love affair with until this very day. I wore out the grooves of many of the songs on that Album but never learned them all. 2 weeks ago, I learned this tune off of Quah for the first time.
played Acoustically with no amplification on a Custom Collings OM2 SS VN. Santa Cruz Low Tension Parabolic Strings, Golden Gate Thumbpick and Jim Dunlop Brass Finger Picks 0.25 Gauge.
Recorded with a Shure MV-88+ mic into an Iphone 8+

Excellent. The one difference from the Quah album is that the original has two guitars, yes? The title comes from Jorma not having a title on the day he recorded it. A recording officer asked, "What's the title of this new song?" Jorma replied something like, "No title yet. I'll let you know before I leave."

Thanks! Yes, on the album it is a guitar duet with Tom Hobson. And you got the story about the title correct. 😀

@@pjk Thanks for the reply. I was in love with the Quah album by 1975 when I was a teen, and I tried to master this song on my own guitar (you beat me there--I was not so smooth). Curious: Jorma recorded it and then left it alone (revived once or twice?). He didn't play it live very often , and I saw many of his San Francisco shows at the Old Waldorf around 1977-1979. The song didn't seem to interest him after he recorded it though I see there's a youtube video of Jorma doing it live around 2003. Quah has about 4-5 numbers that are amazing. Not the ones with Tom Hobson singing. That album was supposed to be half Tom Hobson and half Jorma, but Tom Hobson wasn't in the same league, so the album took a different course.

@@timgracyk Hey Tim! Jorma does play the song live now on occasion. I was 15 years old in 1975 when I first heard Quah. I became obsessed with Fingerpicking and by the summer of 1976, I picked up the guitar and spent countless hours with the album moving the needle back and trying to figure out the songs. If you go to my channel you will see that I play a bunch of songs off of quah. Back in 1998, Jorma opened up a guitar camp called the Fur Peace Ranch. I started going out there one weekend a year to study with Jorma and have been doing that ever since. Here is a clip of me playing one of Jorma's songs, with Jorma ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/aofdgqmwYtGta80&ab_channel=PaulKarp And here are a couple of tunes from Quah: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pae1hn2fjbaMsJI&ab_channel=PaulKarp kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3zGXnyBbbB0p6M&ab_channel=PaulKarp

That was excellent! I feel the same about that record. I bought it when it first came out, and was just blown away. I loved Burgers, but Quah just hit me where I live. I'm just getting around to learning this tune and found your take on it, loved it!

@@pjk Well it's been a year and I've finally got the aches and pains settled down so I can get back to it. I start Banjo class again tomorrow and I will fill in with guitar as much as possible. Imma gonna find me the Quah CD so I can learn a few songs off of it 😁 On another note, what kind of Lawyer work do you do?

Hey Paul, I put the banjo away until another time, Maybe. I'm starting to really get the 3 finger picking patterns down pat and I have the Quah CD in the CD player. This may be one of the tunes I end up learning, maybe. I did find out I have a very slow cancer eating away at my body but it could take 2-3-5+ years before I'm gone, of course I could be run over by a Bus tomorrow too

Well, all right!! You've got the right hand pinky anchor on... Did you have to work at that (of course you did, but...) or does it feel natural to you? On the money, to my ears, kudos!!
@pjk
@pjk 3 жыл бұрын
I never thought about it and just did it naturally when I started fingerpicking when I was 16 years old. Never even crosses my mind that I do it, but now that you mention it, I think it is an important part of my playing that I anchor the right had with my pinky.

Thanks!! I didn't really start working at fingerpicking until about 15 years ago... SF Bay Blues from Pair o' Dice found iced it for me, I faked it with a flat pick up til then...
