Mulan is the stone dragon preparing to defend the family. The song about her reflection showing what she is inside also comes back in the battle against the Hun Army. Absolutely. I think another reason why he's so great is his unpredictability. The soldiers expect him to be intimidated by the announcement of his arrival or the fact that the odds are against him, when he demonstrates his ruthless and sinister nature. Literally burning the Chinese flag saying, "Perfect.", ordering the execution of a scout after letting them run, and plowing through the imperial army in the village while also leaving the village in ruin. Shen Yu is also a Hun, and while Hun women didn't actively go off to war, they absolutely knew how to fight because, hey, guess whose job it was to protect them while their men were out raiding and pillaging? Attila's daughter challenged would-be suitors to a wrestling match wagering her hand against three of their finest horses as a final test of suitability to be her husband. By the time she actually got married, it is said she presented the resulting 50,000 strong herd of horses to her husband as a bridal gift.

I love how when Mulan reveals that it was her that almost defeated his army, Shan Yu is not like "a girl?!" He sees her as "the soldier from the mountains". This is due to the fact that, unlike most Asian people at the time, the huns and mongols treated women with more respect and dignity, they had bigger roles in society than just marrying. There are hypothesis that the Hun army would also have female soldiers.

What I think is interesting is that Shan Yu doesn't underestimate Mulan as an enemy just because she's a woman. He just sees another enemy, and a worthy one at that. But that is to be expected... while Hun women did not actively go to battle, they learned how to fight just like the men did. Because SOMEONE has to protect the camp while the men are off raiding. Attila's daughter supposedly challenged would-be suitors to a wrestling match, wagering her hand against three of their finest horses, as a final test of suitability to be her husband. There’s a theory about why the stone dragon didn’t awaken. Before Mulan makes the decision to go to war in her father’s place, she is seen sitting under the dragon in the rain, seeing her reflection before the montage of putting on the armor and leaving. So it may be that the spirit of the dragon lives within Mulan, that she in a way is the stone dragon, which is why the dragon didn’t awaken when Mushu tried to waken it.

2:12 Assuming Google is ever a reliable source for info, the Great Wall was about 16-26 feet tall with some parts of it looking taller then they actually are due to the ridges on the outside. 12:20 Just to let you know, a heavily believed theory about the Stone Dragon not awakening is because it was already awakened: Mulan. When Mulan prepares to leave for the army, there are multiple images of dragons, starting with Mulan siting at Stone Dragon Statue, her sword hilt being a dragon, and other images. Mulan is the stone dragon preparing to defend the family. The song about her reflection showing what she is inside also comes back in the battle against the Hun Army. Mulan looks into the reflection of her sword and sees a mountain. 19:36 Remember! The weights separately represent Discipline and Strength. Shen mentions in the beginning that you need BOTH to reach the arrow. Perfect use of a metaphor 23:38 Ambushing your enemy is extremely effective, even if said enemy outnumbers your own. There are dozens of historical examples, but a personal favorite that comes to mind is the Battle of San Jacinto. General Sam Houston led the Texan Army of about 900 against Santa Anna’s Mexican Army of about 1,500. Long story short, Sam ambushed Santa Anna and won the battle within 18 minutes. I skipped a lot of important context, but the main lesson of the story is: Don’t make camp near the enemy and assume you’re safe when your reinforcements arrive. 24:18-24:58 This isn’t mentioned but very important. Notice the Hun Archers focus their aim on the canons, destroying a bunch in the process. Then immediately after Shen and the group fire their canons with one remaining, Shan Yu makes a cavalry charge without fear of Bombardment. None of that was coincidence, but clear signs of Shan Yu and his leaders planning ahead, and making an *AMBUSH.* If shen’s group had as many canons as they started with, they’d probably be able to destroy the army with bombardment alone, or weaken the army enough to win in close melee, but they lost their canons to the archers, assumedly along with men (the deaths weren’t shown because DISNEY). It’s unfortunate for the Hun Army that one canon was all Mulan needed for an avalanche to happen.

I like to think that after the end, Mulan never fought again, because she never wanted to be a fighter, she did it only to protect her father, she's great at it, but she decided to find what she wants to do with her life from this point on instead of doing what she was told to, and she's so peaceful that I find hard to believe she had a carrier in the army after that :) but that's what I want to happen, unfortunately Mulan II really happened ^^

Iy occurs to me that Mulan didn't have to stay with the army. When she was being wasehd out she could've just gone home and that would've been that. She saved her father and lived.

People have said it countless times about the various flaws and inaccuracies that this movie has had on Chinese culture. But with me being born Asian and raised with various Chinese influences in my life, I've always loved this movie. It was something I could relate to a degree. I recognized some inaccuracies as a kid. But I loved this for it's fantasy, charm, setting and story regardless. To me at least, it was a charming mix of putting a hint of of modern, with history. And of course, how can you forget the epic soundtrack? It's iconic with capturing the vibe, and has what made Mulan a great Disney-fied take!

Don't forget the scene where she decides to take her father's place it's so bad a** and dramatic without any words needed

Here’s a fun fact for you Cody! The actor who voiced Shang is BD Wong. You might know him as Dr. Henry Wu from the Jurassic Park films and Dr. George Huang from Law & Order SVU

@@Bostonterrierslol I agree that the first is better. But lets let Cody decide how good it was for him

I've heard that the scene where Mulan cuts her hair with a sword, whereas the Western fandom praised the scene's epicness (and thought it meant a new beginning, liberation for Mulan...) it was not welcomed in the Chinese audience, since Chinese soldiers would maintain their hair long. If she were trying to disguise as a soldier, cutting her hair would make her identity as a woman more evident. That is why in the Live Action there is no haircut scene.

20:41: Cody: That lily pad? Me: Well, they had to censor what it was. There were kids in the audience watching it too.

Fun Fact: Mulan has the highest kill count of any Disney character (hero or villain).

You mentioned the Lion King. Will that be next? (As well as 1 1/2 and 2?)

I think this is the first Disney movie that I saw on cinéma. Don't worry you don't have to know about asian culture for knowing that in old times, the war was a men's thing. But, I have something interesting for you : Mulan didn't need to cut her hair because all the warriors have long hair but in asian culture, cutting your hair mean leaving your old life behind you.

If you haven't already, listen to the Mandarin version of "I'll Make A Man Out Of You" sung by Jackie Chan. And yes, he can sing!
