Thanks for your video. I released the Plum Regal hybrid tomato from my fresh market tomato breeding program at NC State Univ. where I worked from 1976 -2008. After I retired from NCSU in 2008, I have continued breeding tomatoes in my emeritus professor status with the university. My breeding program has focused on improving tomato fruit quality and yield combined with resistances to important tomato diseases. Others have reported on the superior fruit quality and yield of Plum Regal. Seeds are availble from numerous seed companies. Fedco Seeds has a nice report on it in their catalog description.

I am in zone 3B in Canada and am on year 2 with Amish Paste and I love them. No blight, lots of fruit, yes I do have to trellis them higher but I don't mind. They are so meaty and perfect for sauces, but I do not deserve by hand. I use a tomato mill and highly recommend it. Such a time saver. That could knock your list down to only 6 reasons you hate them 😜

I been growing Amish paste tomatoes for years now and we had very good luck with them.
@harry84423 ай бұрын
You need better trellising for indeterminate slicing tomatoes. Indeterminate cherries are super vigorous and can withstand pruning during damp weather, which causes blight. You didn't prune your determinant tomatos. Every time you prune the Amish paste, you were creating open wounds for the blight to spread. Excessive pruning because of improper trellising is why the Amish paste did so poorly. It's best to only prune during periods of dry weather. Also your fingers and scissors need to be cleaned in between cuts as not to spread disease.

So interesting, thanks for making this video! This is my 3rd year growing Amish Paste tomatoes in central MN and I love them, they're on my "must grow" list. I think we have a different set of expectations from our MN homegrown tomatoes :) I grow 3+ varieties of paste tomatoes for depth of flavor and prefer a staggered harvest so indeterminate wins for me. I grow them on 6 foot wire fence trellises and weave them as they grow so they're well supported, more vertical and get plenty of airflow. I haven't done much pruning other than removing suckers and they're just now getting a bit of late blight. For making sauce and salsa, I don't seed tomatoes and prefer thicker salsa so the fewer seeds and meatier tomatoes are a win in my book. I've always grown heirlooms after growing garden center hybrids and being disappointed with their eating quality and bland sauce. However I've heard great things about the hybrid paste tomato Pomodoro Squisito and will try it next year. Glad you gave Amish Paste a good try! Sorry it didn't work out for you.

I grew Amish Paste tomatoes from Baker Creek in Southern Minnesota two years ago (we have since moved to TN) and they turned out amazing. Harvested a ton that year and canned several batches of tomato items. Was like a jungle. Might be the weather this year? Or maybe a bad batch of seeds? Both Mountain Vinyard and Plumb Regal are both hybrid tomatoes. Amish paste is an heirloom tomato.
@WillowsGreenPermaculture2 ай бұрын
So for seed collectors, the Mountain Vinyard and Plumb Regal would not work. You can only successfully collect seed from heirlooms. Heirlooms unfortunately many are vulnerable to blight, but there are ways you can avoid that: excellent spacing - you can space exra using companion planting, interplant with basil, carrots, calendula, lettuce - all beneficial to tomatoes. You can also avoid blight by growing under cover or in a greenhouse, or outside,keeping well ventilated, agian with proper spacing and pruning.

I garden in coastal Harpswell Maine and LOVE Amish paste tomatoes. You are not giving this vigorous vine enough support. I grow all my indeterminates on 7’ wooden stakes. Also, as an indeterminate these tomatoes produce all summer. Your Plum Regals are a determinate tomato, they produce ALL AT THE SAME TIME then are done for the season. A better comparison on production would be to weigh the output over the course of the summer. Because indeterminates produce all summer; I harvest then freeze these tomatoes for canning later the fall. Happy canning!

Vines hit 6’ and have gone several feet further onto another trellis. Those plum regal as a determinate don’t come close for yield from the look of it. I also found Pozzano to be a fantastic. Indeterminate paste. Determinate take up way to much garden space. vertical space is your friend. Tomato cages are fine for peppers, tomatoes not so much 🤷♂️
@jaredmccutcheon54963 ай бұрын
A lot of these are issues found with other heirloom tomatoes too. I personally don’t love Amish paste because it’s highly susceptible to just about every tomato disease and it’s always a poor producer for me and I live in a warm dry part of California with a 7 plus month growing season. I prefer a hybrid of some sort as my primary paste tomato. As far as growth habitat, your tiny cages aren’t designed for an indeterminate tomato so they’ll never support one that relies on the cage for all its support. I make my cages out of 6 foot tall concrete reinforcement mesh and they hold up even the most sprawling plants just fine, or I just do a Florida weave if I think the cages aren’t going to be enough.

For canning, I prefer San Marazano determinate. I found if your canning, the determinate tomatoes are the way to go. In your zone, if your going to plant indeterminate tomatoes, early girl's and cherry are the best. Basicslly 50 day tomatoes. The slicers you would be best to have a greenhouse due to the longer growing season (75-85 days) to get a good crop. Also crop rotation on a yearly basis so that the next years plants dont get last years diseases.

I have not ever grown the Amish tomato because I have seen folks cleaning them up like you did just now and they look like a mess inside. @@thehomesteadingrd Yes, it really seems that way. But for those that are still trying to work with them there's a lot of little tricks to being successful with them. Another big trick with Amish paste is they like wet feet but not wet leaves. Hope this helps for anyone wanting to give it another go.

I've also given up on amish paste here in central Illinois. I planted only Roma type of canning tomatoes.
I’m in zone 5b (Door County WI). My Amish are doing great though not ripe just yet. Beautiful lush green foliage and good looking fruit so far. Homemade compost, a weekly cal-mag treatment and a bi weekly dose of high phosphorus and potash fertilizer. I started them from seed indoors in April but wasn’t able to transplant into new raised beds until July 1. They’re in the middle of a large unforested property with great western and southern exposure. No well onsite which means lot of water hauling and probably not as much water as they actually need. We’ll see how they do ripening over the next couple of weeks as temps begin to cool. We still have a few days in the mid 70s coming up hallelujah! Also I only grow indeterminate tomatoes. I use 2 peony cages per plant, one stacked on top of the other for added height. As I get closer to the end of the season I clip the tops. This way I can control production based on weather outlook. My favorites are Cherokee, Carbon, and Lucid Gem!

Wanted to like video but you’re comparing an heirloom indeterminate to hybrid determinate. Also your AP indeterminate trellis is very lacking & you should never have had any vegetation so low to ground to begin with. One of the most valuable characteristics of AP is its superior flavor. But maybe you favor quantity over quality? I’d rather have less harvest but more flavor any day. Also consider storing tomatoes at 55-65 degrees.

You don't know how to grow heirloom tomatoes. They need to on a trellis, not in a 30" cage. You need to prune them up from the soil line and keep pruning them throughout the season. Learn how to take care of them and they will take care of you. Your rap isn't just bad, it's borne out of ignorance. Sorry.
