Watch me try box making for the first time! I was inspired by many bookbinders on social media who make boxes for their books, such as slipcases and clamshells. In this video, I try some simple methods to store small things in my studio.
I would seriously love to see someone make a box for their cat though.

PVA sets very fast. The chipboard really soaks it up. You might look into mixing PVA with methyl-cellulose or rice starch etc to extend its working time. There’s recipes for the mixing ratios in bookbinding books or online. That being said you did an excellent job. Cheers

Oh god how did you do that? I love velvet and tried so many projects with it all turn out amazing bud the velvet ruined the visuals because every type of glue I use leaks and hot glue isn't really a good option for both strength and the volume for most my cases

Make a part two, that'd be lovely! Also, i have a suggestion for lining the inside of the box (if you have a big paper). You can make flaps for the two big side panels and then make a long rectangle piece for the middle and the two small sides. Maybe it'll be easier trying to fit it in without any wrinkles, since you'll have a big side open. Good luck with your box making!

Making small boxes are sometimes difficult. I found a item called a "pan scrapper" that is shaped for small hands to get into corners & flat surfaces to flatten shaped paper. Two edges, one curved the other semi 90° to fit into corners. It's hard plastic & has a flat surface & sides. "Pan Scraper" can be bought where kitchen items are sold. Hope this helps in small box making, it did mine. Can also be used like a bone folder. When folding one piece chipboard, use a "square surface desk" with 90° angle so you can have a more even smooth fold, but be careful in bending, not to much pressure.

I would try putting the glue on the box instead of the paper. The moisture might be the cause of the wrinkles? Also maybe try attaching the paper as you assemble the box. On the bottom at least. The more you make the more you'll find easier ways of doing it. Great Idea trying different methods. I love the paper patterns you chose!

John Heisz did a video on making a set of small drawers from cardboard that looked pretty good - maybe some ideas from that. I also saw a video somewhere which pasted the lining to the bottom first and then used that to attach the sides - can't for the life of me remember where though (I think it may have been on a book conservation site). I rhink you're right sbout the board being too thick for the second method but without trying you (and us) would never have known. Very enjoyable and educational watch 👍😁

What I like about such videos is that even if not everything was perfect, but I could make some conclusions from this if I would make box of my own. But it's just an assumption, not saying I'd do it quicker XD That the first bottom piece better have flaps folded flat, so they won't distract and when glueing those flaps to the box maybe covering the box itself with glue would make it less messy and as for the inner sides I think that I'd glue the outer sides first, so those edges that were glued on top will be hidden, but that's all optional. It's all fun anyway.

Thank you for your video. I work for a professional box making company and the way we would make boxes is quite different. Firstly we would have a flat template in grey board of the box. That would be run through a glue machine and the inside would be would be lined with the paper. Then the box would be stayed together i.e. made into a box 3-D box. Then the outer covering would be glued. That flat glued paper for the outside is then laid onto a flat table the 3-D made up box is pitched onto the flat paper and glued onto the 3-D structure. That sounds quite confusing. I know what I'm talking about and even I'm confused reading that back. 🙂

Yay! So happy you're getting into box making! I love making my own box storages. It comes in handy when you need some kind of tray or box at a specific size to fit somewhere. I bought a new desktop riser shelf a few months ago and couldn't find the right size for organizers to fit underneath. And so i just made my own lol. Definitely a very satisfying (and practical) craft to learn!! Also, that light green leafy paper you used is just absolutely beautiful! 😍

I would try putting the inside bottom in first, then the outside, wrapping it over the lip to the inside. Then lining the inner walls and bringing the paper just up to the edge of the top of the box. That way the pattern will stop and start at the inside corner of the wall of the box, rather than partway down the insides where the outside paper has wrapped over.

Please cover the outside first and then line the inside. Great start. I know there is more than one way to do anything but overall outside to inside is best. You can use a blunt pencil to get into corners too. All the best with your cartonnage hobby.

For your first time, I think you did amazing!!!! An awesome tip that might help! • Once you're done scoring, cut a piece of paper for the inside to be bigger than the perimeter of the chipboard you previously cut. • Add glue to the chipboard and place it facedown on the paper. be sure to score the folds to prevent tearing • Once dry you can cut off the extra paper then glue your box together (taping it to hold the glue also helps for me!) • You can do the same thing for the base (you'll need to miter the corners)and then fold the remaining paper over into the inner box🍾 hopefully this helps!
