Possibly the most romantic, unreasonable and destructive relationship premise -- but my all time favorite song.

Hi Diane, Well said! Absolutely loved the great Alfred Drake (the beautiful KISMET!) This song, sung by the exquisite Harve Presnell and in this beautiful setting, is killingly gorgeous!!! If for no other reason, I watch THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN just to hear Harve Presnell sing "I'll Never Say No". What a beautiful, beautiful voice! And what a beautiful, beautiful melody and LYRIC! KISMET is one of my very favorite musicals! Loved the beautiful voice of Doretta Morrow ("Stranger In Paradise", "This Is My Beloved"!!!) Love every song from KISMET!

You probably know, they (the director and the producer) wanted Shirley MacLaine for Molly Brown in the movie. Debbie was so much better in it than Shirley would have been, there is almost no comparison. But, Shirley was under contract to Hal Wallis and he wouldn't let her out of her contract to do "Molly" for MGM (meaning MGM risked a lawsuit with Hal Wallis if Shirley signed to do the picture for MGM), so MGM finally, finally, finally offered the part to Debbie, who had been trying to, as you said, convince them she was right for the part ever since she saw it on Broadway, (at the suggestion of Marge Champion, who suggested Debbie see it because Marge thought Debbie was right for the part). The director tried to get Debbie to turn down the part even after MGM offered it to her, and through the first part of filming, the director didn't have faith that Debbie knew how to play the part correctly. BUT, after the rushes started coming in, he saw that she had been right all along, and was (as I think) doing a great job. The reason not more is made of the sinking of the Titanic in "Unsinkable" (which I have seen people point out) is that MGM kept cutting "Unsinkable's" budget due to their filming of "Dr. Zhivago," (being filmed in Europe), which was running way over budget, so they kept cutting "Unsinkable's" budget to give more to "Dr. Zhivago." I probably wouldn't care much about this movie at all if Shirley MacLaine had played Molly. It would be forgettable to me, except for Harve Presnell. (To me, to think of Harve Presnell playing the leading man to Shirley MacLaine in this movie sounds like a travesty).

@@merrileebauman8941 Agree with most of what you've said but I honestly don't think Shirley would have been so terrible. Remember how good she was in 'Sweet Charity'? At least I thought so. But you're right, Debbie and Harve together are incredible. Wish I could have seen them when they played 'Annie Get Your Gun' onstage together in the mid-'70's, directed by Gower Champion. I did see him play it in New York but by then his Annie was Lucie Arnaz who was very good.

The plan was to have more songs from the show in the film, but as was said above, the budget ran out and songs were dropped. So they kept on repeating the same songs over and over again. They almost lost He's My Friend too, but the crew got together with the cast and they filmed it in a day. Apart from Belly Up To The Bar Boys which is terrific if you can find the original number before they cut bits of it out for television - but apart from that, it's not a very good film. And not a good score either.

I'm fascinated to learn this, Mark! I look forward to hearing the Brahms horn concerto with this beautiful, beautiful melody! I love Brahms' 3rd Symphony! It's one of my favorite classical works (after Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony, the gorgeous fourth movement!!) On another "note"!, I read a cute quote from the great, great Bennett Cerf: "The Detroit String Quartet played Brahms last night. Brahms lost." !!!!
