Dave Grohl and Barrett Jones listen to the segment of the 1994 radio program "new music show" with Damon Stewart on KISW Seattle, where Barrett plays the new demo of Dave's that doesn't have a name yet. The song is "I'll stick Around" and was recorded just weeks before. Dave explains how this radio program helped start the Foo Fighters ball rolling.

As Dave wrote those songs during the Nirvana era I guess he pretty much had that Nirvana formula still in mind. It wasn't about complexity, it was about writting punk but also melodic simple riffs that made you want to start breaking shit. There was something beautiful about that simplicity. Just a good riff, a kickass drumline and weird lyrics...

Awesome comment!!! At his Pop purity is perfect. The 3 min pop formula all hooks lol lil verses ala Cheap Trick etc master's of American Pop n the formula. Shit stays in ur head forever. He is a huge Springsteen and the E Street Band especially my fave The River album..album #5 Springsteen 11 outtakes Pop masterpieces plus the cuts from the album all the Pop...Cheap Trick n Raspberries American Pop. Bruce was tryin for the 3 min gem. Dave loves that Lp as well as me. Stevie Van Zandt the genius producer n Pop Godfather behind the best they ever dropped!

That first album is an absolute masterpiece. The sound is raw and direct, grungy but very different from Nirvana. He never tried to copy Kurt's songwriting or cash in on the grunge movement. Now we take everything for granted, and he's 'Dave Grohl', but back then he was 'the guy from Nirvana', which now sounds weird, like it's another person.

The journey of Dave and the foo fighters is so fascinating. Producing songs in the beginning that are STILL popular to exploring to own their identity, many styles,, zero ego, total humility,.....yet no matter the style, can identify authentic Foo Fighters every time. Real music never dies

I remember when I heard about this project on MTV news before it came out and I cried tears of joy as 11 yr old or 12 yr old mourning the loss of Nirvana and Bush was big at the time and there was just this void. When the album dropped I was just a kid with no money and my cousin copped it knowing I had to have it. I traded my Jerry Stachouse jersey for it clearly ripping my self off for it. Don’t regret it. Did the same for the Colour and The Shape. Lol. Only it was an amp I didn’t use.

I got In Utero in 2017 just as my junior year of highschool came to a close. Bought it with the money for one of my first paychecks. Such an unbelievably rough, raw and LOUD album. Then I heard months later that Dave Grohl the drummer dude with long hair actually had his own band, and I was like... WTF is this shit? Kurt dies and he forms another band? But then I actually listened to Everlong and let’s just say since then I loved Dave’s work and the Foo’s and ive got such a deeper appreciation for music now because of it
@Zonum1

@@BoxOfCurryos So which do you like better, Nirvana or Foo Fighters?
@BoxOfCurryos
@BoxOfCurryos 4 жыл бұрын
Zonum1 depends on my mood. Most days I will listen to Foo’s since they are more upbeat, and positive. Nirvana can be really depressing sometimes. I listen to them when I’m down and out. So it really depends. It’s genuinely hard to say because i value both bands equally. However on a enjoyment basis, i enjoy foo fighters more often, because I’m not a emo, angsty, depressed teenager anymore. I also don’t romanticize Cobain’s suicide anymore, and I can see him for the man he was. A troubled artist, who made some bad choices, but ultimately touched perhaps a billion people’s lives. Dave on the other hand is a hard working, down to earth musican who’s message and vibe is always about dealing with grief and then moving on from the pain. It’s a really hard question to answer. But hands down.... In Utero is my favorite album of all time. No any album any band puts out, it will never come close to beating that album.

I didn't hear this, but I remember my Mom driving me in the car listening to KROQ Los angeles, and the DJ made a special announcement that the music they were about the play was the first stuff released from any nirvana member since Kurt's death. I then heard the opening notes to "this is a call". It was awesome, but all the music on the radio in 1993/94/95 was awesome. All the music then had a weird, darkness about it. All I can say is that it fit the times. The times themselves were weird, and dark.

They have many great songs. And of all Foo Fighters songs, I’ll Stick Around is the best. This song kicks so much ass. It gives me that pain in my throat that you get when you are transported to earlier days when you hear it. It gets pretty tedious in the studio and when you play the same thing over and over it can drive you nuts. But that’s why these knuckleheads are still together. They compromise and sacrifice for each other. And they push forward through all the heartache. And with that, we get to hear some of the best rock n roll anyone will ever get to hear.

To those who say it sounds like Nirvana: try to listen to Dain Bramage and Scream in which Dave Grohl was growing up as a musician. Debut album has nothing to do with Nirvana, it's much more fullfilled with life and inner positive energy. The two bands listed above had much more influence on what Grohl played in this record. Kurt doesn't stay close to Dave in terms of melodic complexity imho.

When what comes to light? His feud with Courtney is well documented, and they have grown up, made up, and moved on with their lives. Just read the lyrics, the song is about two, kind of three, things: 1. his feud over rights to Nirvana stuff. 2. Her career elevation tactics: 2A) The over-the-top grieving, something he didn't wish to do himself, and believed it was an act to gain sympathy and elevate her career. And 2B) His accusation that her association with Nirvana was simply to elevate her own career. There's another part of the song, that it he's sure they'd get over it in time - and as mentioned before, they did.

I know what he meant when he said "that one is called Cymbal, zildjian cymbal" it's because most of the song Dave rode that crash... Still not a very nice thing to say, he was trying to undermine the song. not cool

WTF? Why would I be "trying to undermine the song" while promoting it on a radio station and talking about how great Dave is? what a stupid thing to say. Dave was the one who drawn a SYMBOL for the song title at the time, like Prince changed his name to a symbol, and I was just making a joke about the Zildjian thing, and could care less about him "riding the crash".

@@laundryroomstudio I didn't know it was you Barrett speaking, I thought it was the host of the show LOL... in that case I retract my statement.. Since you recorded and you are close to Dave, you can say that.. I thought it was the DJ who was saying that in a sarcastic way... My bad. lol
