My children are half Japanese, half Caucasian. We raised them in a longstanding international neighborhood in Yokohama with many other children in bi-cultural families of many different nationalities. The community was a perfect environment for international families. The area where we live has had an international community for so long (since the 1860s) that few show surprise when a non-Japanese person speaks Japanese. Most around here assume that I speak Japanese before I even start speaking.

Great video! Also, know what it's like to be judged on your appearance when it comes to ethnicity, etc. I have a Spanish name based on a Central American Indian Father so lots of people assume (and attempt to chat with me in Spanish which I don't speak). My ex is half Japanese and half American (of Scots and Irish heritage) but looks mostly Asian (with freckles) so I used to see how folks treated her in the US. Looking "different" than expected can definitely affect attitudes toward you - so I truly understand what Miki-san feels. Personally, I think she's amazing and I'm glad you both had this discussion.

What does that mean? LMAO America is a melting pot. That has NOTHING to do with looks. It’s simply a nationality. Unless you mean NATIVE American. In this case, blonde hair makes it clear you don’t mean that. As a first generation American, it’s crazy strange to refer to being American as being white with blonde hair. Black people are American. White people are American, Asian people are American, Latino people are American. Made werid. How are you all not seeing this implied racial biased?

Although, I studied Arabic (MSA) in college & learned grammatical rules which was great & a few phrases as well (I wish speaking was emphasized more), it was Pimsleur that truly allowed me to speak Arabic (MSA). I will say that having studied Arabic (MSA) in college helped me understand why there are gender differences in the nouns & adjectives in Arabic, it gave me an advantage when I began using Pimsleur along with how verbs are conjugated, college gave me a nice head start when using Pimsleur.

People must not be paying very much attention to the details of her face. She very much looks "Happa" as they call "Half/half" in Hawaii. To the point that I would be asking, "Are you....". There is enough arch to her eyes that when she smiles or looks to the side, that the question immediately pops to mind. Combined with how her face shape changes with various expressions....( which muscle groups are used, etc.), it makes you think, "I wonder if...., or I'm willing to bet...). This is all before you throw Cultural/Environmental influences into the mix. Either way, it makes for a great Conversation starter.... "Breaks the Ice...". P.S.: After watching more of the video more details pop out, Most of her smile...Her cheekbones, Her profile, if you look at more than her nose, etc...

I have a great device that goes in my ear and instantly translates my English to Japanese. Making the learning of Japanese obsolete to me. What I want you to tell me is just as the phonetic alphabet altered our sensory ratio to favour the visual sense in reality and made the left hemisphere more dominant over the right. What does learning Japanese do to your sensory balance. Especially does it enhance your other senses of touch or olfactory that you have been able to detect?

If she had black hair she might look more half-Japanese naturally. I know many Japanese people will often style their hair lighter color, but when you have some foreign influence in your facial features, the traditional black hair will bring out more of the Japanese features.

Some could also say she sounds like Bernadette from The Big Bang Theory? She had a very similar kind of voice adult childlike singing nursery rhymes

Excellent topic. Acceptance is often elusive in the island nation. "Visual" cancels objectivity. Thank you both.

You are so lucky that you have more personal space in Japan! In my company, I often have to be very close to somebody else in our kitchen when I want to heat up my meal in one of our microwaves (I'm so hungry sometimes). I work a lot, but other people sit in this kitchen and talk or just stay there staring at their phones... I feel embarrassed when I have to go to this kitchen.

She can put makeup on and definitely will “look” Japanese.. so beautiful and her voice is pretty 😊… I love subtitles that’s how I learned second languages faster.

I'm half-Japanese on my mom's side and I don't look Asian at all. People just assume that I'm white and then they're surprised when I tell them I'm half-Japanese. I've also done a lot of theatre, but I avoid auditions that ask for Asian or half-Asian actors, because I know that they want someone who looks it, so I likely won't get the part if I do audtion for it. I do plan to go to Japan one day and have been learning how to speak Japanese for a couple of years now. I know that when I go there though, none of the native Japanese people will think that I'm half-Japanese at all, lol.

It's always good speak 2 different languages and her english sounds good. I'm from Mexico and spanish is my natjve language and i have the same problem when I'm talking wkth friends in english about talking slow and not be able to say things more faster because i need to think and translate in my head what I'm saying but here we are tryng to do our best and keep learning :) i hope one day i can learn something different like japanese idk why but i have a feeling if we talking about the pronunciation for me at least sounds like is not that hard to pronunce things in japanese but I'm pretty sure if we talking abut write in japanese it would be more difficult. Saludos desde México :).

Miki seems so nice, and to me definitely looks half Japanese. Especially in pictures with her natural black hair. Her current red hair probably adds confusion for some people. My mother's mom (RIP) was half Japanese and half English. She looked more Japanese at quick glance, and some people wouldn't believe she was my grandmother because I'm 1/8th Japanese. I'm a mix of several ethnicities. On my mom's side I know I'm atleast Japanese, English, Irish, Scandinavian, and then German on my Dads side. I'm very proud of my mixed heritage. Alyssa when you and Tommy have kids I'm sure they will be super adorable no matter which one of you they look more like. Take care from Vancouver BC 🇨🇦

I'm half Polish, half Japanese and when I've meet other mixed race Japanese for the first time at age 15, I was shocked of learning about their experience of being discriminated in Japan since the Japanese never saw me as a foreigner. I used to hate the fact that I didn't look white enough but now I'm great full for being who I am.
