I agree. Same goes for alot of other singers in their early days... such as Josephine Baker or even Rudy Vallee. A lot of folks dismiss their early works as amature & undeveloped. I like to hear the occasional off key quiver, crack in the voice....

i think gene raymond has better chemistry with esther ralston than joan crawford in this movie. their flirts seem spunkier and more fun than the solemn scenes with crawford, that feels like he should love her because she's beautiful, sincere and utterly devoted with all the attributes a guy shouldn't have turned down. with esther, it's like, gee this dame is filled with fun, what a swell time i would have with her, so let's kiss, sing and embrace.
