I quit riding because I lost all confidence. I looked back and thought, "there are so many people who want to ride and can't. Why am I going to quit something like that and that I have put so much work into? I didnt come the this far just to give up!' So I rejoined. Thank for reminding me that I am not the only one who goes the tough times in life. I love riding and the gentle Giants❤️💖

I cannot tell you how much I appreciated hearing you speak about the way the equestrian world treats one another - truly, I needed this right now. I struggled with this myself lately - there was a moment where I thought about stopping my channel and I found myself thinking of you and thinking 'how does Esme cope with this?'. It is so nice to hear you speaking about this with your platform. Thank you Esme. You are inspiring and a credit to this community.

Especially with the stressors of every day life and even more so with what you are going through with Woody. I will admit I check your channel often for any updates. Even just a grooming video would be fantastic. We love Woody! I hope he is doing well. Take care. Edit: you actually have a new update. Going to watch it now lol!

I’m 13 and I started riding lessons but after a few weeks while I still wasn’t very experienced it would be our first time cantering and my horse took off with me. I soon after got kicked out of lessons (it was a group lesson and the other girls were learning way faster than me, so the gal suggested me to another trainer who later ditched me). I just recently got on a horse for the first time in months. It felt great and I even cantered for the first time with no hassle. This video is great for me because I feel like no one ever talks about confidence and how scary it can be so thankyou.

I’m sorry this happened to you, it honestly broke my heart reading this. You need to look for different stables. Please go somewhere else where people are more understanding and nice towards all levels of riding. Try as many stables as you can. There will be one somewhere that you will feel like at home I promise ❤

Hey im feeling with you! My 5yo Sparky and me had a rough start as well. We bought him last October, when he was 4.5. In January, he started to not turn right when i wanted him to. Later on, he just started stopping , bucking at my leg aids and going backwards. Turns out I was giving him the wrong aids. We changed the barn and at the new one, one girl helped us. I started getting confidence again. Then, my trainer fell down from him, he screwed from a horse coming the opposite direction, jumped to the side, and she couldnt hold herself. Ironically, even after that incidence, my confidence grew, because afterwards I got on him and he was very brave and tame. But recently, our saddle hasnt been fitting too well.. The saddleman never had any time, and now, he seems to have a bit of a back pain. The day before yesterday, once I was in the saddle, he immediately started bucking, I wanted to dismount but tripped and fell on my lower back and hurt it badly. Then my mum lunged him a bit, and afterwards she and a girl at the barn held him when i got on him again and they walked a bit alonside us for the first round in walk. He was nice and didnt try anything, but we noticed that when we wanted to pull the girth a bit tighter, he pushed away his back. We all agreed he was in some pain. When we pulled it loose again, he was normal again. I also managed to trot a bit. I am so shocked cause despite a minor bucking in transition from trot to canter, he was never a bucking horse. Despite that one time I remember, when I forgot to fasten the girth, the saddle fell on his shoulder, causing him to buck a bit. So hes definitely sensitive on his shoulders regarding the saddle! And the problem with the saddle now is the exact same: Its way to tight in the shoulder area, he already has some hardened muscles... Now im feeling bad but also anxious: Were getting the saddle fixed, but the saddleman only has time to show up next Wednesday... But I dont want to ride him until then, cause im scared another saddle will scare him as well... and obviously I cant use the old saddle any longer in its current state... But Im afraid that he might become naughty if we cant ride until next Saturday... Im so scared actually, and im sad because we just started gaining confidence again!

Honestly it takes a lot to open up about these things and I wish I had this video after the passed three years I’ve had with my mare. From the time she turned five I can’t tell you how much I cried and I felt hugely damaged confidence wise. I nearly gave up so many times! At the end of last year she had three months off. Best thing I ever did for that horse. Wasn’t clipped or trimmed up, never got worked just fed and massive amounts of turn out. She’s come out this year a new horse that’s for sure…. She’s eight this year and things are starting to click hopefully for us. I rode her for six weeks six days a week at the start of this year! Never felt so confident in my life and now I can’t wait to go jumping and try XC with her! Even went to the beach with her on my own (with my dad on the ground) honestly you’re amazing and you’re doing so so well with Joey! You should definitely give yourself credit and a pat on the back because youngsters are HARD man! Honestly love how honest you are! Can’t wait to see your journey continue❤️

I lost my confidence once after falling of really badly while cantering at a show and i did get back on the horse but i was super scared to go faster than walk . Luckily My instructor noticed immediately that i was very tense and swopped me over onto a horse that i never had ridden before , he was a 15 hand cob mix called Clyde , since then the only horse i ever ride is Clyde and he is amazing, not the easiest pony to ride ,constantly refusing at jumps, bucking and rearing , but somehow he has brought my confidence sky high,I love cantering on hacks and around the schools small cross country course , and I owe it all to my amazing instructor and Clyde . I love how you talk about your hard times with Casper, that’s how I feel about my current lease horse. They’re not bad, they just need to be shown that they can do it! And those horses are always the ones you end up loving the most! Also, love your channel ❤️

I know how it feels I,ve only just started sitting on my lone pony, and it's been 3 years since the pony I was riding spooked and through me into a huge rock. Sometimes you just need to spend time with them like groom them and wash them and work your way up to sitting on them.

Im older than your target audience but I really appreciated this video. I broke my collar bone when I fell of my mare after a few months of having her and then broke my back because a cat sneak upon us and I was scared for at least 5 years after that 😅😅 I’m getting back into riding like I used too You’re a really good role model for younger equestrians and your videos are top notch quality 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

This is such a good message to people especially myself as I alwayssss compare myself to people at my pony club. And recently I haven’t felt like I’ve been getting anywhere and that I’m staying in the same spot. This really helped me realise it takes time and patience! Thank you esme :)

This means a lot. My gelding is very spooky and he bolts across the arena a lot. It has really taken a toll on my confidence in riding and makes me feel really powerless. It helps so much just knowing I’m not alone in that feeling. Thank you Esme 🤍🤍🤍

I really needed this as i lost it a few weeks ago and I've been terrified when jumping things that are 60cm and i usually jump 90cm It's been very hard to regain the strength to go over something and i didn't even fall my horse had just fell on the jump It's been very tough for me and i haven't told anyone I've just kept quite but I'm still terrified

Thank you so much for this Esme. I have came back not long ago just last year's winter to riding. Currently i haven't been able to ride as much due to exams and such. But this makes me really happy. Seeing as someone out there is talking about such things and letting people know that they're not alone. When i fell back then i lost all my confidence and couldn't manage to get back to it. My cousin started getting into horses and that made me want to do it again. And here i am finally pursuing my passion and doing what i always loved. You're such a lovely person Esme i wish the best for you. :]

This was a really nice video! I feel like this is the first time I've learned a bit about you and have been able to relate to you on a lot of levels - confidence issues, non-horsey parents, being bullied, and trying to stay positive through it all - it was encouraging! Looking forward to the next video! :)

Thank you so much esme for making this video, really. I’ve been struggling with comparing myself to others and their situations lately, for example I have a friend who started riding years after me as well as got a horse after me, but Is still improving 3x as fast. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that they have all the facilities they need, an arena, trainers and a older semi-schoolmaster, while I have a paddock and a young green horse. Sometimes I feel like I’m a horrible rider and I should be able to be doing all the things they’re doing... but I have to remind myself that they are a lot more fortunate than me, and that’s hard sometimes. It’s nice that you showed that you felt that way at some point with Casper because it helps people like me realise they’re not alone 💕

Wonderful content for everyone! Thank you Esme for shining your bright inner light on the tough times, and how you overcame blows to your confidence. Horses can be great friends and actually teach one how to be confident, but occasionally they like to give ones confidence a little spicy test ;)

He has changed so much, if I didn’t know who he was I wouldn’t recognise him! This video helps me a lot as I get very nervous when jumping even the smallest fences as my first jump I fell off and some of my recent jumps i nearly fall off but one of them I did fall, I have ridden since and I was fine but I’m still nervous. I love that you are honest to us all and help us through our tough riding times. 🐴🐴🐴

Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this video Esme! I recently got bucked off a horse that I started riding not long ago, and it was our first jumping lesson together. He was having fun, and started bucking after a fence and I flew down in the sand, and pulled a muscle in my thigh, and haven’t been able to ride for 3-4 weeks now. And now I’m really scared to jump him again, so all these experiences that you had, brought my confidence back quite a bit, so I really appreciate this!❤️

I've been riding for almost a year now and I've realized how many risks you take when you mount that horse. I am a super cautious person and I overthink everything I ever do. I really felt like, because of my confidence, I wouldn't be able to do the things that would get me to the next level. It's really amazing to hear that doubts and fears are genuinely apart of any sport that you love to do. Thank you for letting me know that I just need to believe and stop worrying about the future but just focus on the present 💜

I 100% understand losing confidence and dreading jumping. It's a terrible feeling and one that's hard to get over. Thank you for making this video and for putting it up, so many only post the perfect videos making it really hard for people who are having confidence blocks. This video helped me realize that we all go through ups and downs. Going back to basics was honestly the best thing I could have done with my horse, you don't realize it at the time, but it does help quite alot to get you going again as well as make the bond you have between you stronger. Thank you again for posting this, so many will benefit from watching, including myself😊

I honestly didn't realize how much I needed to hear what you had to say in this video. I recently got back into the horse world after loosing my forever horse. I bought a yearling at an auction and I've been doubting myself every step. The moment you said 'Am I allowed to own a horse this young?' I felt that in my SOUL. Thank you for sharing your journey and reminding us that we're not alone in our struggles. Side note - after having a few sessions with a trainer, my baby boy and I are doing great. All I needed was someone to remind me that I know what I'm doing lol

Thank you Esme for sharing your story. This certainly helped, as lately I've been scared to canter (really weird, Ik, usually I love cantering), and my confidence level has been low due to me tightening up when I ask to canter, and then my horse going zoomies. I also love how you always keep your horses - It's really good. That way the animals most likely have one good home forever, and it's a lot less stressful for them and more natural. Keep being you Esme.
