I LOST MY JOB

This is my personal story on how I lost my job. It's about how I got laid off from my job and how I found a way to work for myself. You guys asked for this so I hope it inspires you to find a way to do what you love for a living on how to work freelance (or help motivate you to try if it's what you have always wanted).
This is so different video to my usual fashion videos sorry!! but I want this to help anyone who feels trapped and stuck in their day job and needs to hear words of encouragement on how to work for yourself. It's about how to be a freelancer or rather how I became a freelancer.
This is not about how to quit your day job since everyone's situation is different, but rather how to find a way to do what you love for a living and somehow make it work.
If you have always wanted to know how to do what you love for a living or be inspired to, then I hope this video helps.
I feel like so many people lose their 9-5 jobs but no one talks about it so I wanted to share my story.
Steve Jobs Quote:
"Have the courage to follow your gut and intuition. They already know what you want to become. Everything else is secondary."

Thank you Karen. I was laid off 5 years ago and felt just like you only I was 55 then. I couldn’t get more work so I started my own menu planning business. It failed. A year after that my marriage failed. Six months later my son threw me across the room and life fell to pieces. That was October 2017. I moved 5 hours away from my family and began rebuilding me and a life. Through all this time I haven’t been getting enough hair, makeup and fashion videos! All I could think was, I don’t know what life has for me but I’m going to need to look good for it! So, I’ve been studying hard. I’m 60 now. I’m on unemployment benefits. And you’ve got me thinking I might be able to do something around self worth for the over 60s. I already have a little KZbin channel and an old blog that I could restart. I’ve just needed a bit of a push. And then you showed up in my feed! Thank you so much for sharing today. You’ve got me thinking......and crying! 😁😁😁😁😁 ♥️👍🏻👏

Hi Karen. Thanks for sharing this. Very inspiring. I'm a recent follower of you and would like to know more about after you quit. How did you turn your blog into a business and could actually make money from it? and how long did it take you? Could you please make a video on different career options for someone who loves fashion but has not studied it and also salary expectations? I am studying medicine and do medical research but I love fashion.

I left my morning "corporate" job last week, after a total of 11 years. I hated it and I also used to work with the worst people I have met in my entire life. I have been working as a teacher of English in Greece for 24 years and I had the morning job just for the salary. In Greece things are very difficult moneywise, yet it is the best decision I have ever made. Oh, and I am 47 years old. In other words, take that f***ng leap of faith! "The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek". Love from Greece!!!

Hi! Actually, it was completely irrelevant to teaching, it was a boring office job (data entry). Apart from the nature of the job, what was worse was the fact that I had no time for new lessons and I had to say "no" to many new students. I decided to quit when I realised that I would have to spend at least 15 more years there until retirement! Do you also have a second job thinking of quiting? (δεν σου απάντησα στα ελληνικά από σεβασμό στο κανάλι της Karen) 🙂Καλημέρα!

I started my channel as a creative outlet because I didn’t have one in my life. I’ve always loved fashion as well, but part of my enjoyment this far is the fact that I’m not dependent on it for income. It really is just for enjoyment. I guess I haven’t gotten to that place where I believe it could be more. But thankfully I have a 9 to 5 that I enjoy which also brings me a level of enjoyment.

Dearest Karen, I’m on a train watching this video and I’m trying to hold the tears back because this is the affliction I’m going through, as I make my way to work (my 9-5). I grew up poor and shopped in thrift shops all the time, heck, I still do! I love losing myself in a world of unwanted clothes/jewelry/items. Clothes have a way to find you and enrich you, they come with a history of a previous owner that no longer found use for them, but for me,??? They’re great...jeans have been broken in, shirts have that comfort of a lazy Saturday, leather belts have a gorgeous rich patina only time can give. I do have a family and my husband knows my dreams and encourage them. I’m just terrified to take that leap. I gotta make sure my sons have food, roof over their heads. But I THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for sharing this story, im a subscriber and have watched most your videos since discovering you, but funny how it was in my home page today. Yesterday I stayed home and worked all day on my “passion” , reselling clothes online and I felt so fulfilled! I was exhausted but it was a GOOD exhaustion. I do believe in the universe giving you what you need at the precise time, and I believe you’re video was that! Again thank you so very much for taking that leap of faith and for this video 💕🙏🏽 Sorry this post is so long 😊🌈

Thank you for the video, I quite enjoy these types, so don’t apologise for it not being all fashion! You said many very true things, most importantly sending that message out about what you’d love to do. When I was about 9 I started writing seriously. (Holy precocious child Batman, I’ve read some of my reports for school from around age 10, they read like a college level essay- can’t believe I wrote them! That happens often, I’m reading something, then realise I wrote it, odd!) I decided I wanted to be involved in music. Had no idea how, as I had no musical talent, but that’s what I dreamed of, hanging out with rock stars, etc-kids dreams. By the time I was 18 I was firmly entrenched in the NYC underground music scene. I did *everything * involving music, worked with so many bands, knew everyone, even famous rock stars who are still friends! Every job/career I created for myself involved music combined with fashion. Even now, writing the novel series it’s r ‘n’ r & fashion! So I truly believe what you send out into the universe comes back to you, so be careful what you wish for! I would love to hear how you and Michael met! Me & hubby met really weird as well (I told him repeatedly to piss off!) Jet🧡🎸🎶⚡️🦇

I left my last corporate job 17 years ago, because I was promoted from within the company and was doing a lot more work than people they hired from outside in the same level position, but my salary was 15% less. My income level jumped double first year doing real estate, and increased tremendously every year, but after 17 years I feel like I’m at cross road again, I love to write since high school, and been putting that off for all my life. Maybe I should start something new. Anyway, great story.

I remember I was fired from hospital for not meeting quota goals. I had said a prayer that morning that this job had me so stressed out that if I was let go, everything would be fine. The HR manager was giving me a long speech that maybe I should work doing something else, blah...blah...blah....As I spaced out looking out the window past her, I remembered my prayer and cut her off mid sentence. I repeated that I was going to be okay and asked her where I could sign to get the hell out of that office. My boss escorted me to the elevator crying. I had to tell her to stop crying. Years later I'm back at the hospital working a less stressful position and I'm happier than ever. I'm not doing what I love (I haven't found that yet), but I'm in a happy place in my life. I'm sure once I find what I love, I'll be happier.

Thanks for sharing this very personal story. I worked in HR and saw so many people go through a lay off. That was so devastating to each of them; they believed their world would stop, they would lose their homes, their children would starve. Without exception, they realized it was the best thing to happen to them as it made them pay attention to their lives. Your message is absolutely right on, find a way to work in your passion and if you can’t find a way to have it immediately, work your way to it! As always, love your blog, I play with my clothes too and squeal with delight in public places! All the best Karen

it really broke my heart when you said that you were dying a slow death and you were getting heart palpitations when thinking about your job... That's exactly what is happening to me presently, and I find it reassuring to hear how you managed to bounce back (even though it was rough). I'm a teacher and at 27 I already feel as if I were 80 because this job is wearing me physically and mentally. I get sick all the time, I'm constantly sad and have lost motivation in everything because I constantly think of this horrible job I have to resume the day after... I can't wait to leave in a two months and find something that gives me time to enjoy myself! Happy also that I have the full support of my husband like you had. It's so important that you feel both of you are in it together! I truly can't wait!

I think so many of us are not the “9-5” or whatever the regular jobs are. We need to do something creative. And we are not taught or encouraged to do creative things as part of our everyday lives. I am adding this comment here because many people will look at this video for a few years and, like me, read the comments. I also want to encourage women and men not to forget to feed and nourish their souls by doing creative things everyday, be it cooking a meal, decorating a room, gardening, art, music...whatever. I left my jobs slowly, even though I was in public service jobs and liked dealing with the public, I had to work as I needed to support myself, but felt trapped by having to show up to work and have supervisors and bosses who had a different mindset from me. Finally after 15 years of working, I left a toxic relationship and enrolled in Art School, did classes 2 nights a week, worked full time, with weekends and two nights of work, used my holidays to take more art classes and after doing this for 9 years, went part-time to concentrate on graduating from art school. I quit work ( the hardest decision I have ever made, (next to deciding not to have children) and made art full time, with the support of my lovely partner. I still don’t make any money, but do what I love, have time for gardening, had time to look after my Mum when she was sick. To tell the truth, the Corporate World makes us into sick machines, and this horrid emphasis on “more! More! MORE!” Is not the way anyone is supposed to live. So do what you can, set an intention to live your life to the fullest, don’t do anything stupid mind, but don’t feel there are no options. I am now 63. My life change happened around 30, which is a pivotal age for women, stopped working at a ‘job’ at 52. Thank you Karen! You are up there on You Tube with my fav knitting and art vlogs and slow living vlogs as well. Cheers Girl!

Omg! I'm a Manager in a big box store, for 11 years now!!! I deal with it, but I don't love it! It's a mindless job and my passions are elsewhere. I dream everyday of doing what I really love. But... with great medical, 401K, plus more benefits, I'm scared to death to move on. But this video has inspired me so much! Love you!

Hi Karen, thanks for this. You truly don’t know how much this resonates with me right now. I’m in a job I hate, I have nothing in common with my colleagues, working long hours without overtime to meet my responsibilities at work. I’m stretched on so many levels, to the point that I started getting anxiety attacks and nausea at work (quietly suffering). It’s a sad state, I know, but I’ve come to the conclusion that this can’t go on for much longer especially when it starts affecting my health. Because without good health, how can we achieve other things? I’ve got a complicated restructuring situation I’ve got to see through at work, but I’m giving it until December (January, the latest). If things don’t improve or not favourable to me personally, then I’m just going to resign. It’s simply not worth it, life’s too short. Sending you love from Surrey, UK. Xxx

Hi Ms. Karen I’m starting my blog currently I have my fashion page on instagram @pretty.bright.loud.and.busy I’m wondering how to manage the cost of buying clothes and accessories when you aren’t getting paid yet for your fashion ? I currently use fast fashion brands and thrift shopping but I have to limit my post because it can get very expensive to do constant look books. Any tips would be appreciated?

With all due respect Karen, but your youtube channel only makes about 19,000 per year. The fact that you are married to a well-to-do white guy with a real home and a good pension package makes you a very lucky girl. Give credit to your husband, because you are winning.

And, when you remove yourself from that soul sucking job and begin to pursue the thing that you are totally engaged in, turned on for, you are opening up a space at that old desk for someone who may actually like, love that job to take it and make that place flourish. So a possible win-win situation. We can all do so many different things but only a few of them are things we can do exceptionally well because it is 'us' doing it, what we bring to the work is unique...the soul sucking jobs don't care about that so much as needing the seat kept warm, the paper passed, the phone answered, etc. Sorry if that is contrary to your experience, but this is the conclusion I came to... We all need to learn to show a little more self love for that future self, that person you don't want having that regret for what was left undone.

Hey Karen what website host did you use to do your blog? You mentioned it was free to do the blogging fashion. Atm i just instagram blog and tried to look into blog hosting sites but couldn't find any free ones. I am a stay at home mum with a small online business but have always wanted to run a blog site. I too use to work a 9-5 office job and i liked the people but didnt like the managers so when i fell pregnant i jumped at the opportunity to take voluntary redundancy. Since then i grew my online business but i still have a void to be filled and thats my creativity to write 😁 thankyou for sharing your story and would love to hear how u and your hubby met.

The one thing that stood out to me was how the people in the office felt they needed to make comments about you for being creative. I would think it would be refreshing to have someone that is unique and sees things differently. I have always felt I was between two worlds my whole life as an artist and Art teacher. I usually get classic pieces but add a twist.I also have my days I just go for it. My high school students always notice how I dress and I get the most comments from them. I am happy to say good remarks and high school students are very honest. . I remember one day I was wearing a more classic look of brown suede faux pants, soft brown turtle neck and black leather riding boots to my knee and one of my seniors said this is the most normal outfit I ever saw you in since I known you. I hope in a world where everyone buys the sames brands and wants to look like everyone else they can see that it is ok to be different. I love the challenge of being on a budget and pulling a look togiether. I just love your channel and New York.

OMG KAREN!!!! I cried watching this video. Thank you for sharing your story. I am in the same boat right now. I ADORE FASHION!!! Always have my entire life. And I have hated EVERY SINGLE job I have ever had because I wasn't fulfilled at all!! And I tried many fields of work over my 44 years. I realized it was because I loved fashion but did not know how to get into it or someone would think I was crazy and tell me I couldn't make any money doing it. I listened to those voices and played it safe and just followed the status quo. I'm 44 now. And it's now or never for my dream of working in fashion. Somehow I have to make this work or I will simply die inside. I live in Houston. I know there are not many opportunities here in fashion. But I am going to take a course for aspiring fashion stylists soon. I need this for my life. I'm tired of walking around as a shell of a person. I'm so happy for you that you went for it! You're such an inspiration to me. Thank you so much for encouraging me to go after my purpose. Thank you also for inspiring me to buy a pair of badass white leather cowboy ankle boots!! Hahaaa! Wish me luck!

Bottom line, I am very happy that you are successful at what you LOVE! I can relate to doing a terrific job in a very stressful environment. I worked four years as a Transcriber for a P.I., listening to tapes relating to crime every single day. Other employees were stressful or stressed too. I was not treated very well, i.e. little appreciation for my loyalty and skills. Life has far much more meaning than that!!

OMG! How ironic?!? I worked for a printing company here in the Bay Area about 10 years ago on the account side. And exactly - it paid the bills... And yes, I was laid off too (the nature of the beast - lose a major client & your whole world gets upended). I'm still in Marketing but I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I've started and stopped a bunch of ventures outside of my 9-5 (more like 7-7), but haven't found 'it' yet... I'll keep trying to find the thing that moves me. Thank you for sharing your story - lets me know there is hope! And please do share the story of how you met Micheal... Would love to hear it! Hope you had a blast in NOLA and was able to laissez les bons temps rouler!
