there is a blue box on every site you clean up, if you put something into the blue box, it'll be brought back with you to the main menu place. This has no value or importance to gameplay, but is a nice feature if you want to keep soemthing you found cool in a level (such as the gun in the first one, or the chips in this one, or others

It actually does have some importance. as some maps require an welder that's unavailable on the level as well as miscellaneous items required for unlocking secret items and locations.

Even if you need to sit down/take a break, whatever, you could replace paperwork with pretty much anything else & have it be more interesting.
