Korra is like good (season 1), ok (season 2), and then a freakin masterpiece (season 3) and a great end (season 4). But even in the "weak seasons", like season 2, there are episodes and arcs that are top tier worldbuilding and lore and I couldn't imagine the avatar world without them! However I WILL make it very clear that a lot of the flack LOK gets is entirely for the fact that she's a strong woman. Granted, that's not the whole of the critics, but it is a large chunk of it. I don't think Tay will have a problem with that!

My guess as to why they allowed Korra to soley bend water during the match was because their Radio rating probably shot when the anouncer said the avatar is back and playing at a probending match. Maybe I am reading too much into it but sounds like somthing that would happen today!
