I feel like the industry is really starting to understand Remasters now. My only real gripe is these Remaster collections don't include the instruction manuals that came with physical games back in the day. They were technically part of the product and they included a lot of art and dedicated information. Personally if it were up to me, I'd also have the official strategy guide included as well. Those often include a bunch of developer information and unique art.

Soul Reaver is one of the few games that made me want to make my own games later. The lore, the way its written (Amy Hennig did an amazing job). The voice overs are some of the best of its time. Cant wait to get my hand on this. And the prequel novel!

I don't have to say how much I like this game because my avatar that I've been using for 20 years pretty much says it all but this saga of games is something that every gamer should try at least once. I've played the first two games many times and I never get bored of them, that's how good they are. There is something special about them, maybe it's nostalgia, I don't know, but it's a feeling I had 20 years ago and I still feel it now. The story, the design, the music, the characters.... they just don't make games as good as this anymore. I hope this sells very well so we can see a remaster or remake of Defiance, hopefully this time with a free camera like in SR1&2 but first I'll be replaying these two, it's been a while since I've been to Nosgoth.

I can't wait to play this. Soul Reaver is one of the greatest games ever. In all aspects. Great story, great gameplay, great voice acting, great music, and that intro for the first one is, IMO, the greatest opening intro for any video game of all time. Idk why they stopped making games for this series, but I'm finally gonna get to play them again for the first time in almost 20 years. An updated version too! I'm so ready for this.

I never played Blood Omen, my first introduction to this was Soul Reaver on my PS1. I was HOOKED. My school books had Raziel and Kain drawn all over them. I loved the concept of the Spirt and Material Plane, I loved the time line stuff, I adored the dramatic voice acting. It was like somone finally took fantasy stories SERIOUSLY and wrote a story that made you think. I was a fan of anything Amy Hennig after these games. Nothing ever quite landed for me like the LoK story though. I'd love to see something like Castlevania or Cyberpunk Edgerunners tell the whole story we have over multiple seasons. I know poeple kind of want more after Defiance but I really enjoyed how it all closed. I think like was mentioned in the NoClip documentary that just came out, I was more in love with the world than the gameplay of the game. Pushing blocks around, and waving around the Soul Reaver is cool but it sometimes feels like their is so much world and character that is trying to burst out of the video game shell it is confined in. I really firmly believe this is one of those properties that would do well with an Extended Universe.

Raziel's story ended in LoK:Defiance. I've nvr played the Blood Omen games, but I believe BO2 takes place after Defiance.

@kimmycat2977 BO2 takes place before SR1 (the timeline for that game is a bit wonky, i dont remember much of it.) If I remember, there were leaks from the dev that the next SR game had Kain going into the demon realm or something like that. Defiance ended on a cliffhanger I feel.

For me the best inclusion is the map . I use to get lost after shifting between normal and spectral realm , the game never told you where to go or anything to give you any kind of hint . I tried so hard to figure out where to go , so at least a map will help somewhat .

I had played this back in 2000 because I saw the reviews and thought I’d give it a try. Also I was a fan of edios due to to tomb raider so I definitely expected something good. …. Words didn’t do this game justice. From the opening to the voice acting to the simple gameplay yet challenging puzzles. If I’m being honest, I barely understood what was being said half the time due to being hearing impaired. I played the game yesterday and felt like I was 17 all over again . Even better , they added subtitles!!!! I was so grateful for that and could finally follow the story and get more immersed in it so as a 41 yr old, I’m glad I get to enjoy this as well as others who grew up with this. I haven’t played part 2 or defiance ( I brought them back in Oct for my ps2) but will play defiance after I play part 2 and beat it. Great review btw!!!

Soul Reaver was my favourite game on PS1, after MGS. I've replayed it multiple times, even replayed it fairly recently on PS3 and had no problem with the controls. The crazy thing is that I never played Soul Reaver 2. It will be really strange playing a sequel to a game I loved as a kid, all these years later. I hope that SR2 is a decent follow-up to the original.

They made the character models look like Defiance, and so they also uprezzed all the NPCs in Soul Reaver 1 to the same level. The game looks kinda amazing now. And having the camera control on the mouse now makes platforming actually playable. Overall, I am quite pleased with this.

I've been a pretty hard critic of this for some of the cartoony art style but this really does look great. Even the old graphics look naturally better. Never thought I'd see the day this series would be revived in any way. Can't wait to play it tommorow! Great video man👍🏻

There was a demo on Akuji disc so later I bought it but sadly there was a part where the loading screen freezes so I never had the chance to finish the game and forgot about it

Notice how in the first remastered cutscene when Kain tears off Raziel's wings there aren't any dangling bloody pieces of skin stuck to the torn down wing bones as there were in the original cutscene.

Now, a challenge with updating low poly games from 32 and 64 bit era is that they were made for tube TV, and the blurriness compensated for the pointy models and in doing so they created a realistic mood that you don't get when using emulators. Things get so crisp and clean you can see how the textures are low resolution and the models are outdated and it breaks immersion. They need to make a way to reproduce the old TV effects when going back to these games. Or eles, they aren't really preserving history faithfully. Fake scanlines won't do, tho.

I started SR1 last night. Honestly, while they did update a lot of characters really well, I feel like the humans and Kain (of all chatterers!!!) could have used more love. I noticed the camera change IMMEDIATELY and was very pleased. Even though I hadn't played in years, the difference was still very noticeable. Currently working my way through the Cathedral and having a blast

Can I just comment on how cleverly done the Soul Reaver was. Clearly a very powerful weapon but not Over powered. Only being available when Raziel has full health it becomes a luxury which you need to be quite skilled to keep. This makes it all the more satisfying when you obliterate enemies with it. It doesn't ruin gameplay it rewards it! There's also the element of not really feeling whole without it post acquiring the weapon and once he has Raziel without his Soul Reaver just feels like Star Treks Riker without a beard. Raziel and the blade are so inexplicably linked.

I saw this game coming to GoG and I have to admit, I never really played the Soul Reaver series. I wanted to change that with this remaster but you've mentioned that it's much more a puzzle game than a game based on combat and I'm not a fan of moving boxes around or switching levers and stuff. So it will remain on my wishlist but I'll buy it when it goes on sale. Thanks for your very nice review, I had fun watching it!

Theres definitely combat in the game. Its just not DMC type of combat with crazy combos. Though, LOK Defiance took a nod to the DMC series style of combat, fixed camera styling, paths being blocked forcing you to fight multiple enemies. SR1 had decent combat for its time but nothing crazy, pretty simple. SR2 and BO2 play pretty similar in terms of combat where you can block enemies and make a few moves but nothing combo heavy

The main feature of these games is the very in depth story (some consider it one of, if not the best video game story ever made), the atmosphere/environments and the professional, top notch voice acting/dialogue throughout the series. Add some brutal combat and some (at times) very challenging puzzles to solve on top of everything, youll understand why these games are so adored and a favorite by many who have played the entire series

I owned it on PS1, but one of my friends in college brought and left his Dreamcast at my apartment so everyone could play crazy taxi. I went and rented it for Dreamcast and it looked about as good as SR2 did when it came out. Looked like a total remake from the PS1 version.

Great job. I also had a huge struggle trying to finish this game back in the day. I originally bought it on PC on the PC controls made it that much harder for me. Years later, I wanted to take another crackhead up swipe bought a used PS1 so I could play it on its original platform and then amount of still having to buy the paperback walk-through guide that they used to publish before people put them on your for free .

I grew up with soul reaver and got it when it came out around the time of silent hill on ps1. I loved the tale of revenge and hunting the vampire lords 😎👌 I have been excited about this remake ever since it was announced. The original Soul Reaver also had a Dreamcast port that was a *massive* improvement graphically over the PS1 and PC versions. The remastered original graphics look much closer to that port. It would have been a better comparison.

After playing for myself I can see why he assumed it to be the PS1 version. For some weird reason, the trailers and other promotional material show clearly that the remaster is based on the Dreamcast version. Now, at release, the character models of Souel Reaver 1 are based on the PS1 and PC models... A weird hybrid. My guess is, that the jump to the remaster seems bigger that way. In my opinion a very manipulative move.

I absolutely love this series and yes I did Play the original games on the PS1 & PS2. I still have them. Yes I'm definitely buying this collection And I am very excited to see the improvements, especially the map & additional content. I watched a lot of the making of this game on youtube long ago And I will watch it again. I'm definitely glad it's part of the collection because some of these Voice actors have passed on like Tony Jay Elder God. I just loved his voice, just powerful. I would love to see the rest of legacy of kain get the same treatment.And hopefully we get the 6th installment Dark Legacy that was supposed to happen.

I believe this is the way to do remasters. They need to keep the details faithful to the original, for historical preservation, but update it enough to raise the interest of newcomers so they can jump in.

It may shock you that games back then used to make the player think and feel satisfied when they solve the puzzle in front of them and encourage players discover things on their own without the handholding handicapped intrusive UI of modern games. I was beating these games in grade 5 and if you are not smarter then a 5th grader then explore some more, test the boundaries of what you can and can't do or find another path.

The tragedy I think when people mention Legacy of Kain is NO ONE TALKS ABOUT THE FIRST GAME. Blood Omen. Ya know, the game that kicked off the amazing story. Where you actually play as Kain and figure out how he not only became a vampire, but the ruler of the world. I hated your emphasis on "Soul Reaver" when the actual franchise is Legacy of Kain Also Blood Omen has the most badass, don't give a sh** version of Kain out of all the games

You might be looking at the wrong sites/videos cuz I hear it talked about a lot. Blood omen is so integral to the story, wish the remakes would have included a recap of some sort with it cuz its story is referenced so much through the Soul Reaver games.

@randyburger2424 he didn't mention Blood Omen at all in this video. I know this about the Soul Reaver compilation, but as you said it's integral to the Legacy of Kain story. He acted like Soul Reaver 1 is where the story begins. Also, Blood Omen 1 and 2 are on the PS Plus Premium tier (or you can buy al a carte) which I think deserved a mention. I think it deserves a mention that now 4 of the 5 games are now playable on modern consoles

@ yeah, I got Blood Omen 1 for free cuz I had it on my ps3. I went ahead and paid for BO2, in small hopes that it’s sales will reflect whether we get more. Don’t count BO2 as cannon as it was horrible IMO, but still an addictive fun game to play. Super easy platinum, but the Xbox version looks so much better. Been playing the og disc on my 360. Still contained all the same glitches except that the characters don’t spin in the cutscenes!
