Why destroy that perfect, beautiful beta tank and return the fish? It's their home. They are happy there and cared for. The majority of those fish will be resold and be dead in no time because most fish keepers don't have a clue what they are doing. Those female betas will end up in tiny bowls and be miserable and then dead. Please think again before you do this. If you must break down the tank for discus fish, make new homes for fish in that tank in one or more of your other tanks. These are sentient creatures and don't deserve to be treated like disposable decorations. You took them into your care. Stick to the bargain you made with them.

All of the ranchus died. Exactly the same as my last lot. This time, I made sure to feed them blood worms, duckweed and sinking pellets and they all got buoyancy issues and faded away. Not at the same time but over a few months. Never again. There were zero nitrates in the tank or anything else so I know I did everything right. Just one of those fish. I gave it another shot but that's it now.

Love your videos. There's just ONE PIECE of the PUZZLE missing. Heaters. I think you mentioned in one video that you don't heat the tanks...instead...you heat the room that the tanks are in. I can't speak for others, but I'm pretty sure that for most of us, we cannot do that. I can't heat a room up to 76-78 degrees Fahrenheit without heating my entire house up to that temp! I don't have zone heating. So I am forced to place aquarium heaters into individual tanks which is not quite as esthetically pleasing as your tanks. For example...I REALLY like the Eco Bowls you design and put together... but how am I going to do it without putting some ugly heater into the bowl??? I'm not. I won't be able to. So I don't know what to do. I've tried tiny little Nano heaters but they suck. Welcome to the suck. But I love your videos. Years ago I was a successful Cichlid aquarist. I was on well water that was essentially Lake Malawi. Super hard and high pH. My cichlids LOVED it. Now, I am struggling to go Nano planted. So far I am a failure but I take heart in what IAPLC GRAND PRIZE WINNER DAVE CHOW once said: "Trial and error. And I have so many errors. You must find yours, and then, after that, you can find your methods". So right now I am in my "Trial and error" mode. And I do have so many errors but watching the MD videos is going to help me speed up the process. I have so many things to yet try based on the info you provide. THANK YOU! (but what am I to do about the heaters?) 25 Reply

Thanks for the tour MD! I was wondering, with all the low tech tanks, and not so much waterchange. Isnt there fungal diseases or water quality issues sometimes? I have a similar densely planted tank setup with clay/ fine gravel/soil in bottom and sand ontop, so like abit most of your tanks, the water is hard, looks clear, the values are fine, flow so the plants move only abit, abit water movement in surface only in right side. Fish seem active and eat. But they dont breed. Except for guppies. Setup is 360l with a too powerful pump as recommended. Theres 45 fish, small ones 1-3cm and four adult flying foxes. But ive had an issue for many years with a few fish getting symptoms on bad water quality like hole in head disease, popeye, fin rot, stringy poop. The recent year there has been nothing of all that, but there is a funguslike not very visible stuff in the mouth of a fish, it gets weak over time and dies eventually. Its active and eating until ot cant. Its horrible to watch..Ive tried more frequent 40% waterchanges, weekly, treat the fungus, treat the parasite, if it was that, But still, one fish keeps being ill, one at a time. I havent treated for anything in months since im clueless about what it is. Theres no other symptoms than the thing by its mouth. Ive only seen the guppy who ate the floating plant be ill in your tank. It looked like its back was crooked, a symptom of having had many many babies i think. My guess is she didnt make it, but they can live some time being crooked happily. How do you handle it if the water quality affects he fish badly? Hope you can consider talking about that. Although you dont have that old tanks like my five year old tank, you stil might know something new. Thanks ❤ Like in my tank i suspect.

MD, I'm totally with you on the simple on/off of a light. I have ZERO interest in apps where you have to fiddle with colors and all of lighting. I just want a light that comes on with natural sunlight spectrum and be done with it. I have all my lights (simple on/off) on Kasa timers and don't have to fiddle with them at all. I've loved the results. BTW, I agree with you about that one type of light making plants look artificial. The green always looks weird to me in that tank, like the plants are that weird shade of green plastic.
@joshcanada3988

Alright. I think the thing between us Americans and you fancy people over seas that get nicer things is the lids. Majority of Americans have lids on tanks and what not, so even with decent lights and stuff. I think us dang Yankees are losing more par than we think with lids. Everywhere else over the world with lidless aquariums just always have more explosive plants. That's my running theory.

Wow, that was the most beautiful ciklid tank I have ever seen! I have never liked ciklids, apart from dwarf ciklids like rams and apistogrammas, and never liked ciklid tanks. This looks like a paradise island in the sea with the sky all around it 🌅☀️. So light and airy, and the fish like sunbeams from gleaming in the sand and sea. Maybe I can like some ciklids now.
