Norm truly was one of a kind, often opting for the really corny punchlines because he was so confident in his delivery. Every time you see that glimmer in his eye you just know he is about to pull something that no other comedian would dare to even try. First time I saw him was in the 90:s, telling David Letterman about The Panda Game - that story didn't really have a punchline at all but man was he hilarious. I was mesmerized cause I had never seen anyone like him before, he just seemed to be effortlessly funny. Living in Sweden I only had the chance to see Norm on David Letterman and SNL, but i started to scour the internet for audio clips of Norm doing stand up and chatting to talk show hosts, radio hosts and folk of that ilk. I then recorded these onto cassettes that I listened to several times a week. I was a total geek, and still am to this day. One of my early favorites was the Rehab story that I first enjoyed on Letterman, later on I also saw it acted out on his sit com Norm (which eventually aired in Sweden). It was still funny, but him telling the story literally had my crying with laughter. So yeah - Norms jokes are very much about the delivery, the journey, just the experience of that old chunk of coal. Miss him!

LOVE your Norm Reactions, Maddie!! Just a side story: When Norm was young and told his dad he wanted to be a comedian, his dad gave him a Joke Book to help him get started :-) During the NORM'S ROAST of BOB SAGET, Norm used those "corny" jokes to roast Saget, and the other celebrities. Only Norm can pull off delivering "corny" jokes, and taking them to a whole new level of funny! Norm is without a doubt, one of the most ADDICTING comedians to listent to :-) Please keep on keeping on with your reactions!!

I positively love how Norm is the smartest guy in every room and he's always playing dumb and putting on these vocal affects and mannerisms to pull a good 'ol Socratic irony on every in the room, mostly for his own enjoyment. Even when you're in on the joke, knowing Norm is making up a story and ten steps ahead in his mind (I think he starts with a punch line that he enjoys and weaves in his mind while talking a bit slowly and adding filler words to buy time as he works backwards. You can almost see when he's juggling too much and giggles to himself.), the real joke is that you know he's really just amusing himself and you get to watch, and everyone not in on the joke is wondering where the meandering story or joke is going. You should see if you can find Norm on with fellow previous SNL writer, Dennis Miller. They have a great chemistry and friendship and are similarly quick witted.

He definitely sounds like he's trying to imitate the people he grew up with.. It's interesting 'cause he's from a tiny town in rural Canada, but then he came to Hollywood to be a comedian - which is a very dirty business - so he's kinda got this best-of-both-worlds thing going on. He's almost like a messenger of olden times - able to live on the boundary of two collapsing worlds; a veritable Hermes of the modern age.

Norm apparently developed that way of story telling, and his innocent dumb guy stage act in part by studying the Archie Bunker character from All In The Family who had a lot of old school ideas in his head like the fact that violence has been around forever and shouldn’t be spared on criminals by the police; and why not? Violence was even right their at the beginning in the Good Book. So don’t be knocking violence ‘cause it’s been around ever since Abel killed his brother with a cane… Archie Bunker usually didn’t know what he was talking about, but he was absolutely sure of it, and he would always let you know why you were wrong if your views differed from his. Thanks for making videos eh.
