I have some insight on the "do they need permission to use the brand name" thing. Short answer is no*. *It can't be in the song title (hence songs like "Our Lawyer Made Us Change the Name of This Song So We Wouldn't Get Sued" by Fall Out Boy, or "AKA Driver" (referring to Nyquil Driver) by They Might Be Giants), but in song lyrics they can't stop you, though they could theoretically sue for anything deemed libelous, it at the end of the day would cost far more time and resources than it's worth (though, it has happened before, with songs like "Lola" by The Kinks referencing Coke and Coke suing them, then changed the lyric to "Cherry Cola"). As far as paid placement is concerned, sometimes bands might pay to use a name (Blue Oyster Cult paid to use Godzilla), and though brands don't HAVE to pay for the name-drop in songs (sometimes it is genuinely that the artist likes the brand or the sound of the lyric of whatever), brands and producers do make deals together sometimes for product placement in song lyrics the same as in the music videos.

When you mentioned kpop I was reminded of how there are SO MANY kpop songs that have whole music videos, choreo, etc. but they're literally just ads. Some of my favorites are Visual Dreams by SNSD (for Intel), Chocolate Love by SNSD or f(x) (for LG, there are 2 versions), Abing Abing by Orange Caramel (for Baskin-Robbins), Gleam by Mamamoo (for Davich Bibiem), and Amoled by Son Dambi and After School (for Samsung). i’m in business and just starting the marketing unit. advertising is just a form of promo. sales promo with public relations through celebrity endorsement or memes isn’t necessarily free. it often starts with a paid start. so most likely brands offered money to some and some songs use creative liberties or may be hit with copy right or trade mark strikes. the issue with publicity is that it’s hard to control the exact content and the impact it has.

maybe im missing set but in the prison yard scene when gaga is kissing the other inmate, its gaga who takes their phone, in the shot where she swipes it you can see that it's tucked into the jeans of the other inmate, gaga is on the other side wearing the silver and reaching forward.....but then in the next scene she's using the payphone saying she don't have a phone? ....... make it make sense

My favorite use of product placement is in the film Josie & the Pussycats (2001). It is obscene. Tara Reid in the McDonald's bathroom and the Target private jet are iconic.

Britney's Hold It Against Me has like 4 product placements within first seconds: Sony, a makeup company, and a dating website. Also her scrapped video for Make Me had some ridiculous product placements of a gym brand.

22:32 I used to work at a tea store next to an apple store and they were so weird about getting free stuff. We would give them free tea when they had events so they could give samples to customers and they would always insist to an uncomfortable degree to pay for them. We gave free tea to a bunch of stores all the time and they were the only ones who insisted on paying. We learned that apple won't allow to give any "free publicity" and neither will they allow others to do literal publicity for them. We never could've officially collaborated with apple because they were so intense about never ever getting anything for free or even discounted.
