Since Sophie Ashby is my favorite Interior Designer, I wanted to add that she actually majored in Art History and became an Interior Designer by chance. It comes natural to her to start with the Art when designing a space :)
@wasselpa2 жыл бұрын
oooooo now it all makes sense !!

That explains it. Loved listening to her husband and her explain how it “starts with art” in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKepZIKYiZt0mtU Really interesting convo with this creative couple.
@AthalieM2 жыл бұрын
she's not a designer by chance, actually the opposite. in a couple different interviews she says she's wanted to be a designer since she was very young. but certainly using art as a focal point makes so much sense given her academic education.
@minkadior72172 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that information. It absolutely makes sense and definitely adds another deeper dimension as well as explain her superior art choices.

Thought I’d pitch in here and add that she did a summer course at Parsons School of Design in NY. She said she loved it and ended up working for two firms before setting up her own company (they’re very small and relatively unknown). You’ll actually find that a lot of London-based interior designers also studied History of Art! Many of them go on to do a conversion-style course (Diploma) either at KLC School of Design or Inchbald to help get their foot in the door.

For those of you that don't know, Sophie Ashby's partner/husband is Charlie Casely-Hayford who belongs to one of the most influential, Old Money, Black families in the UK. Their influence stretches back to around the 18th Century I believe - but really took off in the 1900s.

What a refreshing place after Kasey Musgrave's snooze fest. I love the tip to use an art piece's color pallete for the room. I love all the color!

Love it! I’ve never had a problem putting artwork in a bathroom. Most bathrooms have an exhaust fan that will help with the humidity. Her husband is a clothing designer and I think he has a great influence on her design work. It is so much easier when you have a meeting of the minds when you’re decorating a home.

I just picked up a pro-framed painting that I'd been waiting for for 8 months (not the framer's fault - supply chain!) and it is always so so worth it. Have also learned that if you have a standard size, you can order a custom mat and buy a ready made frame (in this case from the same framer).
@agfhdl2392 жыл бұрын
@@EvaSkewes Wow definitely going to use this tip! Where would one find custom mats?
@EvaSkewes2 жыл бұрын
@@agfhdl239 I ordered one from my local framing store and it was ready within a day or so. They let me pull down their ready made frames and test them against the the art, and together we found the right mat . In a few months I may upgrade the glass, which they also said they'd be happy to do. Local framers are heroes.

As a South African I thoroughly enjoyed this video and it made me laugh! Collecting art as if it's a live support system and then designing a room around it is typical South African of the older generation and academics. You can feel the hunger pangs but hey don't worry about not affording food, just look at that stunning painting. Another way is to hang precious art "where the light is right for the painting" That's how my mother ended up with an oil painting above the kitchen sink. Greetings from Cape town.
@dcoughla6812 жыл бұрын
I think this home is in Spitalfields, East London - a hipster part of the city. The fireplaces would be typical of houses in this area. With regard to IKEA wardrobes, you can get them spray painted in car body shops. If they are made of melamine, ensure that they are painted with shellac primer first, otherwise they will end up being a horrible mess! Gorgeous home.

The gold artwork in the kitchen reminds me a lot of Victorian morning rooms where they would put gilded or foiled wallpaper in the room that got the morning light so that it would be reflected.

I think there are certain things you do when you have young kids that you wouldn't necessarily do otherwise - like have a sheep statue in your living room. Your kids live in your home too and some of the decor should be there to make them comfortable and happy. My sister has 2 leaf-shaped MCM stacking coffee tables she loves that are in storage bc they have sharp corners and bc her boys climb on them. They eventually will come back out but for now they have a cheaper and softer option.

My new house is going to be a challenge. I have no walls for large art. The place is open concept so my living /family room has three walls. One will have the tv next to the corner fireplace, one has two windows and the third will likely have my midcentury bookcase as it's the only place to put it. I'll have to find smaller pieces to put on small parts of walls. I do love color tho.

Ha ha, I feel validated. I painted my kitchen that same yellow color (perhaps not AS saturated) and I'm planning to paint my cabinets a green that's so dark that it almost looks black. (I have to paint the cabinets: the previous owner painted them w a cheap acrylic and the paint job is streaky and now starting to chip off.} It's a cheap temporary fix, but I think it'll work for now.
