As a carpenter myself it still amazes me too that so many tools can be needed or work. Then my mate turns up on site, (he's a bricklayer), with his trowel , level, a length of string and his sandwiches!

100 percent! I don’t think I’m old old at 52! But I remember clearly as an apprentice and even a young tradesman in the late 80’s early 90’s ( gulf war 1) I had a big dovetailed box I made out of cedar ( still got it in workshop) Contents were; 41/2 Stanley, block plane, rebate plane. Coping saw, hand saw ( 244 or Jack) Roll of chisels, roll of augers, swing brace, wheel drill, hammer, sliding bevel, sharpening stone, and loads of little drills and screwdrivers, nail punch and a few bits of sandpaper and home made things. That was pretty much how we’d tackle most jobs from roofing to finish carpentry! Key to finish carpentry was nice sharp block plane, I’d cut the mitre or whatever slightly over with saw then ‘plane’ it to fit, arguably better than running back and forward to a ‘chop saw’ screaming at you and dust everywhere?! We used ‘trestles’ in Scotland, different to those almost useless ’saw horses’ in England. The trestle 𝚎’𝚜 almost another tool box, but also great for cutting and working on, and the design is such you could mitre skirting boards etc, on the vertical plane , quite easily ( then block plane it on the top) Arguably far better mitre ( depending who’s doing it ) than a chop saw as your putting two smoother pieces together, rather than two Sawn ones. Pretty much like a ‘guilotine’ if that makes sense. The first screwgun I seen was a long battery makita Up to your knees in shavings, as the old bench joiner, loved to send out everything ’ready to be fitted’ ie. BIG 😂

@@Dazza19746you have more or less described me as an apprentice and early days as a time served joiner. Now I've went from everything I needed going into the boot of a car to not having a big enough van........ever😅

I often joke with our taper as he strolls in with his "girly" tool bag containing nothing more than his float, hand screwdriver, hammer and a brush and a bucket of ready mix. And here's me like I'd tipped the contents of my van through the kitchen door😅

You are almost applying cabinetry standards to your work which demonstrates a level of application that is quite extraordinary. Very well done.

Nice plug cutter and fitting! In a pinch if you only need a few plugs you can use a standard 35mm hole cutter (without the centre bit after starting it) and the piece that comes out fits a 32mm hole, though it's not quite as perfect as those.

I've used these Fostner and plug cutter combo's for years in both 10,12 and 15 mm they just tap in so nice and if you get the grain spot on there almost invisible in some cases. I know some people use the tapered pellets that you buy in lengths but I've never tried them in all honesty.
@BradshawJoinery

I have a decent cutter for tapered plugs but you have to have perfect wood or they snap.off and are a pain to get out!. This style is great for batching out as you just carry on when one snaps!

Lovely work. With regards to the tools needed it makes me look up in awe when I see what the medieval carpenters did. With regard to the build shouldn't the end of the building had the render on it before you put up the timber frame?

6:15 I get all ponderous at the end of a job. When I start the "putting the tools away ritual ". Am I able to do jobs that others don't seem to be able to do, because of the skills that I have learned over the years? Or because I have accumulated so many tools over those years, and it's the tools doing the job and I'm just an operator? I hate existentialism....and irony!!! Oh.. nice plug cutter.....now I've got to buy another tool.

Now this video is boring 😅 that plug cutter is awsome, he's me happy with the 5 little ones i got from Lidl for a fiver😊. My other half said what will he do if it starts to rain, I said go home.
@dwalsh3469
@dwalsh3469 Жыл бұрын
My theory is this. You’d get the job done with half the tools, if you had only half the tools. You’d just do it differently, but get a similarly good result.
