Your work is excellent but as soon as you said it was a little tricky to set up, that put me off. I’m not at your level and I reckon I’d waste a load of wood in the set up. I have a Trend dovetail jig and I find it impossible to get right.

I must say this seems strange to see a master finish carpenter working remodels . Most I’m familiar with are working production on hi end construction. What little DIY I’ve been involved in , remodeling,etc, I find remodeling far more difficult than new construction. I find your work far more difficult. I hope your pay scale rewards you appropriately $$$.

I enjoy to watch your stuff and I learned lots of things from you only from few videos I seen. I'm looking forward to see new videos from you. I think you are one of the best joiners I seen online

Hi Ollie, I have just come across your channel and this video. I have owned a Felder AD 531 planer/thicknesser for over 13 years now. Like you, it was one of the first machines that I bought and I have been extremely pleased with it. For some time I have been looking to upgrade the cutter block to a spiral but I have always been put off by the cost. I was always hoping that Felder itself would provide a retrofit option, to no avail. After seeing your video I have now ordered a new cutter block from FindBuy Tool. My only concern now is that I am not really mechanically minded so I am hoping that the replacement process is pretty intuitive and straightforward and does not require any specialist tools. The AD 531 manual is predictably thin. Any guidance that you could give (over and above what is in your excellent video) would be much appreciated.

Basically I bought a better condition one then didn’t want to throw the old one out… so I kept it and use it for trenching and alternative setups allowing me to leave it while I can still use the other one.

I saw you struggle to get the belt on the sander. Made me smile. It either slips in, in one go, or it needs several attempts. Cost of American timber, likely to go up in price, as if timber costs are high enough. I doesn't seem that long ago I was paying around £ 11.00 per cubic foot, for furniture grade European Oak.

Funny you’re working with oak. I am building a white oak vanity. Plywood edged with 3/4 “ oak. So after watching you with the Ryobi pinnailer I bought one. FYI Supposed to do 1 3/8 “ nails only had 1 1/4” but even those didn’t fully penetrate. 40% needed filing down or removal.

American white oak is good for exterior use as well has a good rot resistant quality !
@joelester9662
@joelester9662 2 күн бұрын
It’s durable by rating but not recommend for exterior use as its moisture content is generally too low. Sometimes far less than 10%.
@scottmcfarland1177
@scottmcfarland1177 2 күн бұрын
Then why do they use it in marine construction? White oak is fine out side! Would in exterior application will not remain at 10 percent moisture! It will change all the time !
@joelester9662
@joelester9662 2 күн бұрын
@@scottmcfarland1177 If it’s used at a moisture content relevant to the application then of course.However my point is that the majority of AWO imported into the UK has a mc in mine and many others opinions too low for stable exterior joinery. Saying it will move to suit outside conditions is making my point for me. Also use what you like. Your job your rules I defend your right to make a mdf boat if you wish.

You are correct. Ollie is a genius at carpentry, but I respectfully disagree with him about using a reveal as small a 1-2mm. I use between 1/8" to 1/4" depending on the door/window as each application is unique. But in principle, I agree with Ollie--- big honking reveals are best avoided.

I think it’s one machine with two heads. One is a dedicated saw and the other is a saw with a long spindle for a dado grooving head. The heads may possibly move in or out on the machine bed I’m not sure as I’m unfamiliar with this machine. No question is dumb mate.
