Elo is basically chess power level
@pocarski3 жыл бұрын
Basically all you need to know about Elo: - For every 400 points of difference, the odds of winning become 10 times better in favor of the higher rated player (i. e. 800 vs 400 have odds 10:1, 1700 vs 900 have odds 100:1 and so on) - After every game you gain or lose points based on the outcome and the difference in strength, aka losing to a weaker opponent punishes you harder than losing against a stronger one (similar with winning). Your opponent also loses (or gains) the exact same amount as you, so the winner effectively takes some points from the loser.

What Levy means in Game 3 is that most ppl (below 2000 and especially below 1600) just play KID or Grunfeld or that kind of stuff because when they are low rated they just google for a good opening and then they read the Wiki article and it reads "The Kings Indian is a HYPERMODERN chess defense" and they think "WOAH ey boy I'm a hypermodern guy, I gotta learn this!" and thats why they think its automatically good. And then they play this opening from 1000 rating on up until forever. They learn 8-10 moves of theory by heart which makes them look like 2000s (as Levy suspected in the opening) but as soon as their theory stops they have literally 0 clue what they are doing and every follow-up move is a huge blunder. And they dont understand that this is not how you should learn chess (because you dont learn something if you play 10 perfect moves but then blunder 6 times in a row). You are way better off playing "simple" openings that create similar positions over and over again where there are just some very slight differences and you can now figure out what move to change to adjust to that. And eventually when you really know what you're doing in general with simple openings, then you can approach these modern openings because even when you are out of theory you will have a feeling which piece could belong where and what your strategy in general could be. And then you analyze the games and you might see oh that was a slight inaccuracy, I shouldve played this instead or I should have played these 2 moves in the opposite order because this and that (but you dont blunder 6 times in a row and have absolutely no clue what youre doing like white here).

Thinking about it seriously. You covered GM blunders, so maybe Guessing the ELO could be a good way of paying attention to the basics In order to prepare for your upcoming tournament. Also, I'm really looking forward to watching all of your championship's recaps! I love them!
