I have a great story about this series I was rewatching an old Guess The ELO video, as one does, I think it was the one called Worst Ever. Anyway, right after the video I was inspired to play a match of chess. And immediately got a position really similar to one of the games in the video! So I knew exactly what I had to do and got an amazing advantage, traded off the rest of the pieces and won up a bishop and a knight when he reigned. It was the game where the sub pushed b2 to b4 and got hit by QtoA4 check, with a knight behind the queen. And I won! Thank you Gotham ♥️

Since you long castled, you don't care about those pawns, and it threatens black king's safety. If you damage his king's pawn structure he can be fucked real quick
@asdfgh-ym5se Жыл бұрын
The idea isn't just H4. Its H4 then H5 then HxG6 or H6 if the opponent allows it. Also bringing in your g pawn for the attack. Basically, using the pawns that aren't very important to you to attack the pawns that are most important to the opponent.
@fili3907 Жыл бұрын
The other 2 responses gave most of the reasons why in this position (and in other similar positions, i.e attacking with opposite castles) you want to push your pawns towards the king. But I'll give some other (I hope relevant) other reasons. If you can push your pawns and ecxhange them with your opponent's pawns, it will lead to open files/diagonals to exploit with your pieces. Or it can force your opponent to push their own pawns to prevent you from doing so. But this will make some near the king squares weak (i.e that can't be controlled by any of their pawn). Such squares are really important, because they are "outpost" where you can install one of your pieces and proceed with the attack. So, with what have been said (by the other as well), why should we push the h pawn in this position (and not the g pawn), and how to determine what pawn to push in general ? Here pushing the g pawn first doesn't do much; It doesn't threaten any pawn exchange (even if it goes to g5), doesn't open any file nor any interesting diagonal to attack, and doesn't help to stabilize a piece on an outpost. On the other hand, pushing the h pawn threaten to exchange it with black's g pawn and open up the h file. Or even going all the way to h6 and forcing the king into the corner (it could be useful in some instances I guess). Generally speaking you have to consider the columns you are opening, the pawn structures that could result when exchanging, and of course wheter the pawn will be able to go forward (can you secure the pawn push ? can your opponent block your pawn before it reaches a relevant square ?), and of course if you can check the tactics it's always good, as for every move.
