I Loved The Arknights Anime But You Might Hate It...

So the Arknights Anime just had its season 2, Perish In Frost. I was harsh in my review for the first season as I completely love Arknights, I've been playing the game for 3 years now. So I wanted to see the anime be as good as it possibly could be. Which is why I'm happy to say that, I love the second season. However, much of my love for it does come from how much I like the game. Which is why even though I personally love it others may find it underwhelming. Regardless, I find it's flaws need to be talked about so if we get a season 3, that can improve upon this feedback. And I really want a season 3, that'd cook so much.

The biggest flaw of the anime, in my opinion, is that they didn't really manage to show the scale we are talking about. We never really get a shot that show the scale of a moving city like Lungmen or Rhodes Island compared to Lungmen, or a map that shows the different countries control zones, maybe even something like the loading screens in game that show the different architecture would have helped, and because they never properly establish scale we never understand that Ch'en leaving Amiya is a big decision as they are not just around the corner.

I am on episode 14 and have read up to chapter 11. I am glad they didnt make the anime a pure action series. Yeah it has some issues with pacing and stuff but by not making it action focused, imo they maintained the feeling of the written story. I see arknights story as a mature story which is what i got from the anime and that is enough for me.

It was literally the anime that made me install the game. Without this media I would never have downloaded Arknights. After all, it's obvious that a book explains more things than an anime, it's not for nothing that people say that light novels are better than anime in the vast majority of cases. It's personal, but I find that for someone who knew nothing about this franchise, I would rate the anime 8,5/10 because you feel the passion behind its creation.

The anime is such a fan-service, if you play the game there's a lot more to appreciate about. While I got VERY disappointed on the rooftop fight, the payoffs for the most important scenes hit so hard. That "click" sound on faust's death is the most memorable part of the anime for me, in the game faust's death was not as detailed so it never really left an impression to me but the anime elevated that scene so much.

i really wanted them to make the Doctor talk more. make them strategize more and not just have other characters acknowledge that the Doctor is a genius strategist and leader or whatever. and by strategize i don't mean like S1Ep1's kind of 'strategizing', i mean really show us that relaying the plans to the team members, or relaying orders in real time like how they did with Jessica when they were fighting Frostnova the first time. i also wanted the anime to have the Doctor be more of a goofball sometimes, but that's prolly not coherent with the tone of the stories the anime is telling. also kind of sad that season 2 didn't have cameos of other playable operators that doesn't explicitly appear in the story.

I feel that. Most of the Doctor's character starts to develop later, like in Vigilo and Break The Ice. At the start they generally don't take center stage in the story. But seeing more scenes of the Doctor being a great strategist would've been really nice.

What's great about the story is that Amiya, or RI in that matter, never actually dealt the finishing blow. Amiya did kill Alex, but it was by accident, abd in return caused Misha to become Skullshatterer, with Ch'en killing Misha afterwards. Faust didn't even die to RI, but to the LPD, Frostnova never actually lost to them, but succumbed to her infection, and W fucking dips from every encounter cause she's a cockroach. This happens every time Rhodes Island is present, with even the events (Obsidian Festival and Near Light are the main ones as Amiya and Doctor are in it and do basically nothing) following this cycle of RI barely doing anything, if they are even in the story to begin with, and have other characters settle the matter. Compared to most shonen where the main character group would walk into a problem and resolve it themselves, this grounds Rhodes Island into being just a faction amongst other factions in the world of Terra. Edit: Also, I just realized Roaring Flare is the 2nd longest word count by a short margin of Lone Trail, and I feel like they're gonna make it one entire season, with chapter 7 being a whole ass movie. I do hope it is a movie, as having Patriot's climactic end be only the midsection of a season feels extremely stupid and heavily undervalues his character, who was hyped up since chapter 4, 6, and literally 2 events in the game. While I'd say chapter 6 cements the story as being actually decent, chapter 7 is what makes people actually want to invest in the world, solely because of Patriot.

I really enjoyed the anime but a part of that does come from how I'm already invested in the story due to the game. So I can't say my experience while watching it would be the same as someone who didn't know the story prior. But I can say, as a fan, this shit was goated with the sauce.

honestly, imma be frank, I've been playing the game for like 3 years but for some reason I was never able to breach chapter 3, so the anime provides me wilt a lot of much needed context for the characterization during events (even if its only cursery). Also I really do have to admit that as intriguing as the story in the game is, the anime is just inherently easier to get immersed in.

Fuck no, they should have had at least 10 high quality episodes with the amount of whaling the community did But i understand the decisions made and the fact they somehow even managed to make the anime exist, much less a possibility is a fucking miracle. eh, they should just make Original Stories if they actually trying to make good impression and introduction for AK world. you got more freedom on pacing and flow of the stories because you create the stories spesificaly told in 8 episode instead trying to Jammed 2 whole chapter into them. hell, they could adapt their anthology manga or ifrit manga since both of the would perfectly fit into 8 episode without jarring pacing like we had right now Anyway, Kay's Daily doodle probably gonna be better intro than this one

WAY better than season 1, but i still wanted a little bit more from it FrostNova for me, had an extremely great introduction, but she wasn't focused all that much later on in the story. Still though, her final moments are good. Mephisto is a villain that really makes you hate him, he's written better here, and even has a little bit of depth for his relationship with Sasha. the much less mentioning of "DOCTOR!" definitely enhanced my experience watching it Also I can see that Yostar has learned a lot from season 1, and makes some of the scenes in this one look really badass It's a solid 7/10 for me. Now, i admit this, i DO NOT play the games before watching the anime, so the source MAY BE different than the anime. But even then, i am kinda at the same boat as you.

There were definitely areas where the direction or animation failed to meet a quality standard, especially with Episode 4 of Season 2. Half of that episode was difficult to stomach. But we got a Frostleaf Burrito, so 10/10 anime.

Personally i really liked this season of the anime, both the subtle nod to the memieness of the regular story (don't tell me you didn't see the FBI open up meme in the storming of pazi plaza), and the amazing scenes with frostnova (every single one was perfection) But, i do think it could have done with 1 or 2 more episode's, at least of runtime, just to give some of the characters a bit more time to have story. Blaze and Greythroats conflict isn't major in any story or plot sense, but it does directly show the parallels between Rhodes Island and the reunion movement, with the conflicts between and differing ideals of the various members of both factions, so it's honestly huge thematically. missing out on it for the time constraints was a significant loss. Also, the line "the arts on his crossbow had almost run out", which answers in a single line how that little kid has such powerful shots, and just in general why crossbows are such effective and widely used weapons when we know that guns exist in this world (yes yes, sankta guns don't work like real world guns, but its still a big question at this point in the story)

I loved Frostnovas entrance and frostleafs moment (which she got in game too but not nearly as cool imo, anime really let her have her moment, while also being the only one to survive frostnovas frost blast that she took head on. even though shes not great it made me e2 her.) Something I love is that the anime actually got people to try the game and anime onlys actually really loved it. Hell a couple of them called it underrated. (Otaku Spirit is one of the examples) Faust o7 Yetis o7 Frostnova too o7 Also if your interested they made a survey for CN that one can fill out of 'What do you want animated next, not tied to main story' Should go find that. :D

At my previous job we were working remote (2021) and i was looking into getting into games to easily pick up and put down as i was working (and suffering) in a call center. Ended up having to leave the job due to health reasons and for a long while during and much time after i found very little enjoyment or happiness in things that would normally provide those things. So after doing some searching into the game i had a few worries: how would a gacha handle a tower defense game when placing the wrong tower often results in losing a level, (towers being locked behind gacha could mean a useful tower or type of tower might not come up for a player due to rng and hamstring or halt progress) and would this hurt me more than i already am, mentally. Ultimately decided against playing it but still be interested in it, nice to see a review of the anime since i heard about season 1 a while ago but not much beyond "if you are a fan youll probably get way more out of this than not but its also just ok".

wish we had more time with the Yetis. there could have been scenes of showing them fight, either fending off LDG goons or in a flashback against Ursus patrols. the former would have been much better, planting the seeds of what's yet to come. also the Yan CCP agents were just, there, not providing tactical support to the LDG. one small highlight was that the black coats were disgustingly brutal in nearly all the scenes they were in.

As someone who doesn't play the game (I don't have a device that supports it), I'd say I really liked the anime (i even cried at times), but it's understandable that other people might think what you said. I hope things in the anime continue to progress in a better way, but I would say it's a good anime to watch.

I just agree with what you said. And was going to be the end of the comment, but you reminded me about Blaze vs GreyThroat and I remembered that feeling - the anime feels more chill, more civil. While in the game it feels noticeably more harsh, more dark and brutal. Not just Blaze and not just lines. but some scenes and overall vibe as well. Not like it is bad, but it is an another thing that makes adaptation different from the source material.

Experiencing chapter 6 for the first time through the anime was an emotional roller-coaster that had me sobbing. Since S3 hasn't been announced yet I hope they take their time to make it as high quality as possible. 9/10 for me

The anime has been a strange experience. I was watching it with a friend who doesn't play the game, and we both really enjoyed it because of its story and the themes it deals with. I felt pleasure that my friend hated Mephisto, sympathized with Faust, and the last few episodes we were torn apart arguing about what happened. Of course, it has many pacing problems and they left out many important things, even at times when the episodes ended I told my friend those details. However, if they released a commemorative package of the anime again, I would buy it again without thinking so that the third season can be made and see Patriot in all its glory.

I’m no god tier writer or anything. My only qualms with the anime was the original few episodes. Which, I stopped watching after that point, and it comes to the point of ‘oh after X episode it gets good’ but it couldn’t hook me before that point, and therefore, even were it to be good after that point, well i’m no longer pushing through the drudgery to get to that point again. Anyway, something that pissed me off a little in the first season was how they handled Amiya, now, I haven’t played the games, so I don’t know if it’s simply being true to canon. But, when I saw Amiya struggle to command everyone, I saw a perfect opportunity for character building, which was promptly quashed by the doctor taking over, once more making Amiya dependent on him again. Which unnecessarily delays any improvement Amiya herself might have. Once again, that’s just the opinion of a small at home writer, who, ultimately has only read novels over the course of my shorter lifespan, and only written in bits and bob’s. So I can’t say my opinion is correct, i’m just stating it. Because I feel the ‘it gets good after chapter X’ is always a bit of a lazy argument. It’s the literary pieces job to hook me within the first few chapter to continue onto that point whereby it does ‘get good’ so, less in part to the anime’s fault if it’s simply keeping true to canon, I couldn’t watch it all up until this point. I do have the praise the animators though, I really love the style they have for the show.

At this point people probably already talked about how its 4+5 that get as many eps as 6. I agree with the notion of "season 1... but better". It still has some of the same growing pains in that it really has to sprint through all the moments and shorten them in order to cover everything with just 8 episodes. However when we say "but better" I mean significantly better. Like episode one of Perish in Frost was kinda weak, but every episode after is a big big improvement. I was kinda doom and gloom about season 2 which lead to me putting it off until i decided to binge it. And that helped a ton too. You just have a lot less time to agonize over every little thing that isnt perfect and just keep rolling, i realy should never watch stuff weekly again. I think they did a good job of squaring the circle in making this work with just 8 eps and were with maybe one exception or so smart about how to allocate their time. If this is the rate at which they are getting better, I am really big time excited again for whats to come. Here is hoping next up is them combining CH7 and Darknights memoir for the next 8. And then Roaring Flare separately, or they gotta do more than 8 eps please please.

I would disagree, fleshing out certain chapters like chapter 5 is to get build-up for the later arcs that shows us who the doctor is. We won't have the luxury to prioritize every part of the game with screentime, but it is more about the overall story being told within the next seasons as well.

This anime was extremely dissappointing to me. While Arknights is famous for extremely long writing that isn't always writing that provides the reader information, and more so just make it longer, the anime in season 1 did a good job and reducing it to a length that most people would enjoy it. Season 2 simply got rid of waaaaaaaaaay too much. A lot of things does not hit the same way in the anime like it did in the game (they did Blaze extremely dirty), and this was one of the few animes I've watched where I legit got mad at what I was watching.

Tbh, in general most of people just watch one Anime for high quality animation. If the animation is bad for them the story is bad too, is a stupid reason to hate a anime. Anime can have good story with dogshit animation. Arknights s1 was very solid, the animation carried the story since the s1 story is meh, s2 story carried as much as the animation, story is the important key that can save the Anime even with weak animation. I hate mephisto, but I hate him entirely, I think he is not needed in the story, I think HE is a weak point in the story itself, his past is nowhere near unique or more tragic than many other characters but his actions are fucked up beyond belief and he's broken in so many ways. Faust is a good character, but is brought down with Mephisto due to their dynamics in the story. Faust should be slightly rewritten giving him a real reason to do what he does, which would be somewhat easy and no mephisto, all his scenes can be thrown into the trashcan, he's useless. Yeah I really despise that son of a bitch, he's not fun, he's not good in story, has no positive impact on the story, doesn't add anything, doesn't add suspense (effectively) it's only a 'shock' factor when he starts turning people in originium zombies and when he comes back as bird for the song. That's all Mephisto is, and I am irritated that they spent so much time in this season on him instead of showing us characters eating or something instead, and I'm half joking, as seeing characters do mundane things help tremendously to feel a connection with them, why do you think Miyazaki always put 10/10 foods scenes in its movies? Why do you think the candy scene between doctor and Frostnova is so impactful? Because seeing characters do some bantering with a candy that also hides a double meaning to it was genius, I dare say in all the story that moment was one of the most genius ones, sadly, that scene was too rushed, it deserved a whole episode... I'm not gonna hide it, this entire season for me is Frostnova, as she's one of my favourite characters in the game, and I was honestly shocked when she died in the game and I couldn't believe it, the story literally threw a ton of money into the trashcan to make a point, wow, this was astonishing for a gacha game to do that, obviously we are never going to see such a high level sacrifice in main story again, we should cherish it, chapter 6 is amazing especially for meta reasons. I think the show did a good job portraying Frostnova and the Yetis, they are important in story because their sacrifice was a message to us, saying that our enemies...don't need to be our enemies, and rhodes island the more it advances the least it treats adversaries as pure enemies, especially in later chapters. But the ending point is the same, Arknights is *not* an action story. Which is weird at times, admittedly cuz it feels like fighting is a core part of it, but it actually isn't. My major issue, is that doctor did almost nothing, I was hoping they wanted to have him as main character in later anime seasons but seems to be they won't...sad.

I feel bad for saying this but I could never get into the arknights lore at all, like I know snippets and stuff cause there are some characters I really like but over all I have no idea what the story is even remotely about so when I found out it was getting an anime I was semi excited. Now I say semi because 1. I already knew the first couple chapters were not that good compared to the rest so I knew Season 1 was not going to be the best arknights could offer, 2. It's an in house anime and seeing how they handled azur lanes anime I was semi satisfied but at the same time wanting more cause as much I enjoy fan service those episodes were like 8 mins long and they focused on the loli trio out of all the characters they have available. So I tried watching season 1 and I could only get through like the first 4 episodes I was just bored, and I kind of hate myself for it cause I really wanted to finally know what the hell the lore was for the game I was playing the last year. To summarize my feeling about the anime, for me at least and the type of person I am the anime just seemed bland and boring; the color pallete also doesn't help with that and the animation was okayish like you said to many frames were just the characters standing still and mouths moving. Now I don't mind exposition but when its just literally 2 characters staring at each other, no animation, nothing in the background to help you understand more about what they are talking about and then on top of that a lot and a lot of monotone voices besides a couple of the characters I just knew I wasn't going to last and its a shame. And I'm just judging it as someone who realistically has 0 knowledge about the lore of the game and only saw the first 4 episodes, so sorry if I trigger some one cause of the take. And before anyone says "Oh you probably one of those that requires full blown action like jjk and hentai levels of fan service -" no I don't, I have sat through a lot of anime that are just about characters talking politics, or having long ass expositions, slice of life, depressing ass anime, full dedicated episodes about planning and other mundane things that aren't dopa mine hits on my brain and the anime for arknights just didn't hook me in I just felt like I was forcing myself .

thats one of arknights biggest weakness especially in the first half of act 1, so many exposition so i cant fault you on that, but it is necessary to set these going forward because they're introducing a whole new world with no other reference point out of any other fiction that currently exist. example would be isekai in general, isekai dont have to spent a lot of time world building and just slowly introduce stuff because we go into isekai knowing the basic of what to expect. meanwhile everything in arknights is different from every other fiction, magic system, technology, hell even the city in arknights is a nomadic city (moving city) and whatnot so the exposition is kind of necessary, but i will agree that they could've done a lot better job

The bastardization of "Lullaby" ruined it for me. It neither sounded good nor did it make any sense for it to be english and japanese.

Singing a song in a different language is not bastardization, it's called a different version. You just have a preference and are a minority considering how many people did like it and even prefer it and want a jp version to be released. Getting a voice actor that can both sing while in battle and speak Russian and Japanese and fit Frostnova is not the most feasible thing yknow? Asking a little much perhaps?

@@EvalithFoG Yes it is a bastardization if there is a reason for the usage of a particular language, it's no less insulting than going to the Tokyo Olympics and replacing the Japanese anthem with an English version just cause "it's more appealing to the majority". I don't care about the existence of a JP version, i care about the proper version being sung by Frostnova who would have never sung it in JP AND EN but Russian due to where she is from.. And sure it's difficult to source a VA who can sing a single song in Russian, then don't sing it at all and use the original as an insert song when they fight Mephtisto in a later season.

@@asdion Lullaby is not equivalent to a national anthem though LMAO Folk song are translated all the time, unless it's done poorly that's not considered bastardization. I don't see why she wouldn't sing it in a different language so that others could understand it :D I'm sure the original composer for Lullaby is furious about this though, so furious in fact that they worked on Lullaby in the anime, lol. What a non-issue. Ultimately it's not that deep, I prefer a translated song together with an incredible voice actress known for singing while in battle over no song at all, most do.

@@EvalithFoG It is equivalent to a national anthem, it is the changing of a song that has been created with purpose into a version for the sake of popular appeal. And folk songs that are translated "all the time" tend to be garbage too your point being? And what the original composer does is of no relevance considering there are more than enough creators who make bad choices You prefer it just like some people prefer CBT, that does not make the song good. Arknights is not Symphogear, there is nothing wrong with having an overlay song, if you can't do it properly do don't do it at all.
