I was making $165k living in a swanky downtown apartment before I bought my van and I was utterly miserable. I had everything I thought I wanted and learned the hard way it wasn't it. You have loved ones around you and are in good health. You seem like a winner to me! In case anyone is curious about the rest of my story, I decided to buy a brand new Sprinter a year ago. A few months later I quit my job. A month after that I moved out of my downtown apartment and into the van. I travelled the entire country until my money ran out. Now I'm working again, but still on the road. I'm happier than I've ever been!

I hate my life! I’m disabled and after my roommate died I received a notice of nonrenewal at my apt after 15yrs of rent never late. My daughter helped me get into another apt but I wanted a down payment for a van that I could deliver out of and live in. She can’t comprehend ‘van life’ so I’m in an apt. I’m disabled since my options are limited. I can’t even work my way out of debt. I was $600 in debt when roommate died. Now I’m $18k in debt at 31%. I think living in a van will help me get out of debt because the gone rent can go towards credit cards. I would rather chase after God and the weather instead of just chasing after a buck. Kudos to you guys! Enjoy your life and be sure to put God first.

@@shockawha9 sorry to hear about your situation. My biggest regret in van life is buying a Sprinter right away. I’d recommend saving some cash however you can and buy a cheap van to start. Then you’ll be able to focus on paying off the debt. That’s what I’m working on myself.

Very relateable video. I turn 30 this month, been in the TV broadcasting industry for 12 years (what I thought was my dream) and feeling burnt out beyond repair. I've really been thinking of that saying "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". I think it's easy to get overwhelmed and think we're doing things wrong but it's just life. We can try our best to shape and form things but there are no promises. Just have to slow down and take a step back to get a better look at what you already have. 2 dogs, a loving partner, family at your fingertips, a place to call your home and rest your head. Many would say your rich beyond imagination. There is not right way forward, just your way forward. Whatever you and Julie decide to do next and go next will just be part of the story.

I'm 76 years old, college educated, intelligent, with lots of skills and talents (from horse training to IT) that I've deployed in all kinds of ways to keep myself relatively--although often minimally--comfortable throughout the years. But I'm still a tenant, not a homeowner, and still getting by doing odd jobs for the wealthier and more conventionally successful people I live around. I never wanted to get married, have kids, or have a career, but of course I used to believe that having "direction" and money = success as long as I was working for myself instead of THE MAN. But I never had any real ambition, never had any strong drive to do anything in particular, and I don't seem to stick with things. I seem to prefer a sort of footloose, random exploration of life. It definitely doesn't look like conventional success, but it's what I've allowed myself, although not "on purpose"--it's just the way I've wandered through this life. It's taken me a long time to stop comparing my choices with conventional norms and stop labeling myself as some kind of loser because I didn't take a traditional path to material success. Slowly I've learned to stop discounting myself, appreciate what I have, and revel in the peace and freedom of my life off the beaten path, which seems to be what I wanted all along. I see myself as more creative and interesting than most of the "normal" people I live around, and now it's clear that I wouldn't trade my life for any of theirs. So, if I were your fairy godmother, I'd bestow upon you the ability to genuinely appreciate all the ways your life works for you and recognize that as success. ❤

The older I get (62 presently) the more I realize that what is important in this life is not about accomplishments, vocation, position, projects ect..all can be good, but what I try to do now is take one day at a time, focusing on growing and learning, and loving and listening to those people who are around me that day. I still have goals, projects, but loving God and loving people is my first priority, things seem to work out and it's a simpler more peaceful way to live.

Don't be so hard on yourself Ben. You're a good content creator and your videos are entertaining to watch. You may be on your Mum's driveway but your reach is global. It's amazing how many people who spend years working hard suddenly find success! Every day on this earth whizzing through space at 67,000mph is a gift. So you may feel like your going no where but in fact you're exactly where you are supposed to be. Just keep creating content with Jules 👌🏻 Film your odd jobs and to do list if it means you get a video out every single week. A lot of us grew up with parents that went to college, worked 1 or 2 jobs throughout their lives, bought a house, had a predictable existence. It felt like that is the roadmap to fulfillment and you just follow the steps, then you get there. But...even a "predictable" life doesn't work that way. Life doesn't really have a purpose unless you assign it one, with intention. And life won't gift you fulfillment either; often the fulfillment and sense of purpose come from finding joy and gratitude in small moments, creating projects for yourself (or goals to accomplish,) and it isn't necessarily going to be this "A-HA!!" fanfare moment. Life just...is.

As someone who is a couple of decades older than you I can give you some great advice. Life is a ride. Sit back and enjoy it. You only get one ticket. Just do your best to enjoy each day and it will all become great memories. Sadly you are more likely to remember the bad things, so keep them to a minimum and your final high-score will be the best ever. Live, love and laugh. Don't get hung up on the little things. And finally, when things look bad (I am about to lose my well paid job) be grateful you had that good time and remeber that there are others that never had that opportunity and are having it rougher than you. Perspective! Peace dude!

I'm 37, fulltiming, and just like you, had to stay at my parents in Upstate NY for about 6-7mos because of cash flow this year. Something that might help you is that any big drastic change or endeavor is a 5 year minimum journey of ups, downs, pivots and constant re-planning. As long as you don't lose sight of the destination, you'll get there, but it's a long-game where just as you think things couldn't get more offcourse, something new and more valuable reveals itself. And that new and valuable "thing" that makes you you, is usually what takes so long to find. Your content is way underrated so don't give up! Wishing you the best my dawg. We will survive this BS.

Don't worry, Ben, it will all work out in time 😊 And if you ever feel like a loser, just know that you actually do make a meaningful difference in people's lives, even the people following your channel! 😊 I stumbled across your channel in early 2020 while researching housing alternatives to get away from an abusive ex. During one of the darkest times of my life, your channel offered me accessible knowledge of how to live in a van, but it also gave me a glimpse of what my life could be...happy and healthy, full of adventure and laughter 🤗 I ended up eventually leaving and later on, met my husband and best friend. Now we are renovating our first RV together and using the very things I have learned (and am still learning) from your channel to make it happen 🙌 At 28, I'm still nowhere near where I think I should be financially, but the reality I am living in now, was once my biggest dream - I guess I try to keep that perspective, anyway. So, if you or Jules are ever feeling down about success vs failure or that you lack meaningful purpose in your life right now, just know you've played a role in someone else's pursuit of happiness, including mine 🤗 Thank you so much. I wish you guys all the happiness in the world - keep keepin' on, you two! 🙌

Dear Ben, first I have never seen a YT that is so personal. I first would commend you on that. Secondly, I am turning 60 and sometimes still thinking what I will do when I grow up. I believe that these moments are ultimately very useful in life to reflect and relate those things that you value most. Not every day is easy (unfortunately), but they are precious. You are not a loser when the going is sometimes rough. It makes you the man you are and I am sure your mom was happy to have you around. These moments are more precious than having a load of money in the bank. Money is not everything and really just a means to an end. Indeed, follow your gut and the answers will come. Take good care and sorry if there are any spelling mistakes. Greetings out of the Netherlands.

All of these feelings are valid, and so relatable. But, dude, you started a shoe company(you still did that), made a channel and a van, went all over the US with your pets and friends, rode several many tiny bikes, and climbed literal mountains all before finding your partner and creating a beautiful home on the road together. It was also super responsible to come home btw, but being responsible can feel pretty lame sometimes. I found this channel at the loneliest part of my life and you gave me hope. Like, "If this dude can make his happiness by showing up as his nature/bike/animal nerdy self then I can too". This is only temporary. You got this brother. Keep going. -32 and still figuring it out but also v. inspired by you.

Ben, there is a self-critical asshole who lives in all our brains. The voice that says, "I should be this or that by now..." That voice, the ego, will never be pleased no matter what you do. What I know is that there is no finish line. After every adventure, we’ll still be here, figuring out what to do with our lives and what’s next. All we will get is more days to fill. The problem of how to fill them will not go away. I find art and nature to be a grounding place that restores my feeling of belonging. Watching your mini-films here on KZbin, I think you find that place in storytelling. This video was a beautiful representation of the lost feelings we all face.

I am 33. I am very much going through the same feelings at the moment after coming out of a 14yr relationship. I am back living with my parents in a tiny box room, trying to earn enough to have any chance of saving... Theres a lot of looking at my life wondering what happened, im not where i thought or wanted to be by now. But i am slowly trying reframe. I have not had the typical life of marriage and children but i have had a lot of other things and i may not have the journey i wanted but i need to make my own, not what society deems 'normal.' I also struggle with comparison, looking at people my age or younger being much further along in life. I'm trying not to do that either. There will always be someone worse off than you or more behind than you. In this case I would say that is me for you 😅 BUT seeing your videos you guys make inspire me and give me hope I can get there too one day, just at my own pace, when it is meant to happen for me. :) Keep doing you guys.

I'm currently in a weird settling phase myself after several years on the road... considering home ownership, kids, marriage, a stable job. While the stability is nice, it's not where you'll find your sense of aliveness. It's a constant struggle for me, balancing stability and pushing into discomfort. You're asking the right questions and after following you for quite a while now, I know you are the kind of person who will figure it out and continue to follow your curiosity. Listen, you are young, you have time to find new pathes and grow my boy! My daughters 39, moved back home...shes a nurse, she lost her husband during coflu, and my grand daughter took her own life after that. My daughter sold everything and first coached surfed. Then she wanted to try making furniture so she bought ryobi tools. That some how led to a van. She sold her old unreliable minivan, got a 4x4 because of the places she wanted to go. So a e350 ford, diesel, high roof she messed up then needed professional help installing. She got mech tools...learned to do maintainment stuff, messed up her lift. Towed to a 4x4 shop, they were gracious enough to teach her how to fix her van and also install the stuff properly. She became mech curious. She then began a race car dream. So she bought a miata to get started in just doing stickshift, and rwd. Fast forward to now. She tows her miata to events and sleeps in van. Her miata has a chevy camaro's v8 in it! Its low and wide! She still lives here at home. But nothing a damn bit wrong with that. So dont ever kick yourself. And in our family and our heritage, its not un common for many of our families to all live on a farm or ranch property. She has a cheap fringe squat rack, a rogue barbell and plates, a rogue echo bike, a rep fitness bench, all in my garage. She went from 250 pounds, to 145, muscled. She just started brazilian jiu jitsu. Shes been doing tae kwon do for a year, and thai kick boxing. She has a small tx250 bike she goes adventuring around on. But is eye balling a sporter forty eight... Shes going to hit road again and try fishing. She wants to get into video games. As a child she was always driven by school. But now she wants to get into console and pc gaming, but on the go. Shes learning hot to film and edit right now. I myself want to learn that too. And I am old. Haha

As a fellow vanlifer who just spent a month with my parents, I feel the first half of this video so hard. My papa has told me that it is totally fine for me to stay as long as I need. But I feel so guilty despite only being here a month. Heck, I felt guilty at the 1 week mark. And so that combined with my desire to go back to Phoenix, I pushed my rebuild to finish and getting everything set so I can leave and get back to the road. But I love the way ya'll transitioned in the 2nd half of the video. Learning to accept failure as just a step towards success is so important and something I myself have struggled with. I hope ya'll are able to get back to doing what ya'll want to do comfortably.

Damn, thanks for sharing this inner narrative of transition and reflection. It's brave of you to tell the story about the tough parts in life before you know how'll they'll turn out. It's so cool to see that this exists alongside the other tiny window of your life I've seen of you and Julia goofing off and making stuff. Although we may forget, I think this is a universal human moment, and you did a masterful job of telling your unique version of it. I feel you. After months of mechanical work, I took my van to get an alignment with the hopes that I could start actually turning it into a home...but the shop refused to work on it for liability reasons and instead wrote up a huge list of issues and counseled me to just give up on the vehicle. And this is during the same week I got laid off. So...I feel ya. It's a very special feeling, to be sliding backwards yet knowing, it'll be okay, I just haven't figured out how yet.

Life is a circle and you're just going to end up where you were when you were born again one day - frail and helpless. As well, those times close to home are going to be memories that outlast the lives of those you love. My father passed a year ago,and it really helped me to understand how precious every moment was w him - even though I knew it when he was alive, too. I am currently looking at a camper van as a failsafe home as I get older.46 now,and a looong way to go....Blessings.

😮looks to my that your enjoying family time and helping your mom with needed repairs. It's awesome that you are doing that for her. What an awesome skill. Remember we are here for love not money and it looks like you have a loving family. My point is that I see you as successful. 😊

it's simple - every day you wake up is a good day! It really could be worse. You have a fine mobile shelter. good food and family (your Dad is a riot!), loving support, a smart decent partner, useful and marketable skills. Plus some very expressive pets!

We all have moments where life feels like that. We reassess, make adjustments and new decisions for what happens next. I’m from Indiana as well, in 2010 I rented out my place in FL and stayed with my family in Fort Wayne while I searched for another international teaching job. (I had previously taught overseas.) It took time and it wasn’t always easy or comfortable and the weather sucked! But, I made it back overseas with a job in Europe. Trust yourself, you’ll sort out the path. Wishing you the best.

You got this Ben and Jules, it always takes time for things to get figured out. Hell I'm 54 and finally landed a job I really really really enjoy, and with the past couple years I've burned though savings and 401K and I need to rebuild all that. Might have to move my three dogs and I into a van sometime. LOL You can always do man-van-onlyfans!! LOL

Brilliant vid and I loved the bit at the end - I assume that's your Mum/ Auntie... Certainly a good spirit! I think no matter what age you are anyone can relate to your woes - at least you're still young and I'm sure the experiences will all fit together nicely with hindsight once you are aware of the bigger picture!

Great video guys. I think that is the right perspective; to focus on your life as a group of experiences. I didn’t hear any hard definitions of your goals or measures of success. I did however hear your fear of struggling to make ends meet. Based on your videos it seems like maybe you are making your ends meet and who’s to say that the relationships you are building are your greatness successes. Your life experiences (goals) you share here far out due most people’s goals (experiences) for their life. Keep going.

I have followed your channel for many years because I really enjoy your cinematography, editing, and sound effects (especially Rocky & Archer). Your videos have always brought a smile to my face, even when the title of the video is depressing. This video illustrates that. It’s very professional. It seems that there would be a way to channel that talent into a higher paying venture/employment. If I hear you correctly, you feel stuck. It may be time for a major shift in direction. Maybe that shift is employment/home/marriage/children? There is a reason why many people do that … it gives meaning to life and marks the passage of time.

These times are rough-not like it was when people easily moved out to a place with nothing more than a friend saying move in with me, I need the couple hundred extra bucks you’ll pay for rent. Keep the faith-you and your girlfriend will do just fine. The fact that you have valuable skills will pay off! Don’t forget to give thanks everyday that you wake up. Your parents must really appreciate the beautiful work you’re doing on their house😀🙏🙌

This is the point of Vanlife. You aren't trying to travel the mainstream road, quite the opposite. You cant compare or compete. Its just you making yourself happy. Thats it.

I love your videos, somehow they always hit something inside me. Not sure if because we're apparently the same age and going through similar life experiences. But I love them. (typing this from my childhood bedroom in my parents apartment, while I way for pieces to arrive so I can go work on the van conversion 😂)

I hardly think you are a loser. Hell, when I first watched a video by you, you had a shoe company, had another job, and were working toward van life full time. In other words, you had already done more/accomplished more than an enormous number of people. You also have a quality significant relationship that some of us will never achieve. Figure out what you want, plan your work, work your plan. And if it needs to change, then change it. SO I just went back and watched the propane video from the first build. I’d seriously urge you to consider trade school. You are very capable, and the trades need smart and motivated people. Very respectable way to earn a living. Don’t allow having a college degree interfere with your ability to earn a living!!

Yeah man you're good. I'm going to be 54 soon, and I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. I've been working for the same company for 30 years and can't afford to purchase a home in L.A. I also can't retire until I'm 58, and everyone says stay until 62. I guess, I just need an adventure. Be thankful for everything you do have, and enjoy everyday no matter what. Yeah you're good, so am I. 😀

Honestly many families are cruel and this world is chock full of cruel people, you better be enormously thankful that you have a loving caring family that is way more precious than you can even imagine it's a blessing from God. I myself and many others don't have that. I'm 62 going on 63 6 years ago being jilted and only living in a room . So my strong suggestion is, BE EVER so THANKFUL!

“If men have nothing worth living for, then they stay Peter Pan. The alternative to valued responsibility is impulsive low class pleasure.” That’s a quote that has been stuck with me after watching a Jordan Peterson video. I’m 34 and have been living like Peter Pan since I was a teenager, have travelled the world, done van life, avoided any real responsibility, and found myself still miserable and nihilistic in the end. I spent the last 6 years becoming and working as a carpenter, the trade is my base to build up from, but a tradie with a skill set always in demand. Looks like aside from some kids, you’ve got everything else you need right there in front of you. A loving family, a loving partner, home. All you’re missing is a bit of responsibility and a fulfilling job
